I'm pretty sure it's Shawn Mullins, most famous for his hit song Lullaby. I believe Antje met Shawn through their mutual friend Chuck Cannon.

I think Dan Mulligan + Guest got it.

My favorite "road" song of hers is Long Way. Brings back my own memories.

Correction:

Maybe we wore our hearts too freely
on the nights when we were touted
on the marquees of that fleeting drop of time.

First I would like to state that Antje does not partake of "pretentious allusions" or the "hope the teenage angst market will go for it". She is a niche artist who has stated, "I only became a songwriter so I could keep being a singer". It is largely about the voice (from her point of view); and yet her lyrics are thoughtful and purposeful. This song in particular was written when she was considering leaving the music business, and thinking back upon her heroes. It is very much from the heart. As has been stated elsewhere here, the words vary a little with each live performance (as is the case with all live artists; sing what you feel). But this is the version recorded on "Toward the Thunder".

Caffeinated Warriors

I settle in rooms
permeated by the stories of a million strangers.
Their ghosts dwell in the fixtures and the walls.
And they disappear like the mist
as it rises off the highway;
where nights are too quiet and too loud.

And they tug at your dreams in the middle of the day;
say'n the devil you know might be better than the devil that you don't know;
the stage lights and the miles will never show.
But the riches I bring you are nothing, mere trinkets,
mere currency between strangers;
and if you ever loved me you will let me go.

So good bye Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
and all you intrepid wanderers.
Good bye Amelia and Hemingway;
you broken-hearted explorers.
Good bye Joan of Arc
and all you caffeinated warriors.
Good bye, good bye to you.

I charted my course
in the fields of unfinished cathedrals,
to the pulsing heady calling of the southern cross.
I watched it pour like a flood
on the surface of lake Erie.
In talking to my GPS I've been talking to God.

I suspect it may be written in my blood.
But these castles of sand can not stand beyond the winter,
and the crow flies in the trail of Evangeline.
Maybe we wore our hearts too freely
on the nights when we worked out
on the marquees of that fleeting drop of time.

So good bye Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
and all you intrepid wanderers.
Good bye Amelia and Hemingway;
you broken-hearted explorers.
Good bye Joan of Arc
and all you caffeinated warriors.
Good bye, good bye to you.

...

So good bye Antoine de Saint-Exupéry,
and all you intrepid wanderers.
Good bye Amelia and Hemingway;
you broken-hearted explorers.
Good bye Joan of Arc,
and all you caffeinated warriors.
Good bye, good bye to you.

So good bye Antoine de Saint-Exupéry,
and all you intrepid travelers.
Good bye Virginia & Woody Guthrie;
you weary unravelers.
Good bye Townes Van Zandt;
you damned and dogged ramblers.
Good bye, good bye to you.

Good bye Hank Williams,
and you damned and empty handed gamblers.
Good bye, good bye ...

Good bye, good bye ...

Antje Duvekot

Throw in enough pretentious allusions and hope the teenage angst market will go for it?

Worked for Dylan and a few prog rockers. I suppose Suzanne Vega is the obvious precedent in the whiny-young-women category. Does it still work?

Thanks Jim,

I agree that the Claire Dacey version is easier to follow and you may be right about whether or not she's actually singing Antje's original words (she's clearly not playing the original tune) but this does help me fill in the blanks. (Not sure why I'd written Lake Eyre because I had it as Lake Erie in my mind.)

The 'middle eight' bit in my version is a bit of a mystery. It doesn't appear on the album version or the version on Soundcloud but it does appear on a version on a compilation CD that a friend of mine put together for a charity. I need to ask my friend if she knows anything about that.

I listened to a live performance by Antje Duvekot on YouTube. She leaves out a few of the lines you have and repeats others. It is still hard to understand.

I also listened to Claire Dacey singing the same song. She is a bit easier to understand, but it is still questionable whether she is singing the words Antje Duvekot wrote.

Anyway, here's what I have. Judge for yourself whether they are correct:

Goodbye Joan of Arc and all you caffeinated warriors....

I charted my course through fields of unfinished cathedrals....

I watched it pour like a flood on the surface of Lake Erie....

These castles of sand now stand beyond the winter....

Goodbye Townes Van Zandt and all you damned exalted ramblers....

Has anyone worked out the lyrics to the wonderful song Caffeinated Warriors by Antje Duvekot? I'm about 95% there (I'm particularly proud of cracking the reference to Antoine Saint-Exupery) but a few lines are still eluding me.

This is what I have so far:

I settle in rooms permeated by the stories of a million strangers
And their ghosts dwell in the fixtures and the walls
And they disappear like the mist as it rises off the highway
And the nights are too quiet and too loud
And they tug at your dreams in the middle of the day

Is the devil you know any better than the devil that you don't?
The stage lights and the miles will never show
The riches I bringing you are nothing but trinkets
Mere currency between strangers
And if you loved me you would let me go

Goodbye Antoine Saint-Exupery and all you intrepid wanderers
Goodbye Amelia and Hemmingway, you broken hearted explorers
Goodbye        ????   you caffeinated warriors
Goodbye, goodbye to you

I traded my course for fields of unfinished cathedrals
To the pulsing heady calling of the southern cross
I watched it pour like a flood on the surface of Lake Eyre
And talking to my GPS I'm talking to God
I suspect it may be written in my blood

These castles of sand now stand beyond the lantern
As the crow flies on the trail to Evangeline
Maybe we wore our hearts too freely
On the nights when we worked out
The marquees of that fleeting drop of time

You hunters of lightening, chasers of snow
You’ve been orbiting light for the rose(?)
It's a foolhardy dance and god only knows

Goodbye Antoine Saint-Exupery and all you intrepid travellers
Goodbye Virginia and Woody Guthrie you weary unravellers
Goodbye ???? you damned and dark-haired ramblers
Goodbye, goodbye to you

Goodbye Hank Williams, you damned and empty-handed gamblers
Goodbye, goodbye
