Hmmmmm . . . the scansion [I hope I'm using the term correctly] fits "I Tipped My Hat and Slowly Rode Away"], but I've never heard that verse included in "...Tipped My Hat...". I think Gene Autry had the original hit recording.

I'm still searching for any or all of the words to this cowboy song and its origin. My hubby reckons I made it up myself but if so why didn't I finish it? Any other ideas anyone.

It is lovely. Ed McCurdy would have loved it.

I did a partial search for the lyrics. It looks as if it comes from a western: "Check your guns" (1948)
In the reviews Here "classicsoncall" says: The first couple of musical numbers in the picture were handled by Andy Parker and The Plainsmen, but the final tune was done as a 'dueling' duet between Eddie and the pretty Nancy Gates. I wasn't sure Miss Gates was paying attention because the first line of the song by Eddie was - "You're as pretty as a palomino pony." One might interpret that as saying she had a face like a horse, but she sure looked fine to me.
The 'Eddie' referred to was Eddie Dean

Thanks for that. Shame I can't find the film anywhere. Tried Youtube for film and song but no luck so far. I'll keep trying

DVD information for the movie Check Your Guns on this site credits this:

"Moseyin' Along". the latter in a duet with leading lady Nancy Gates.

IMDB gives this info:

Moseyin' Along
Written by Pete Gates, Sung by Eddie Dean and Nancy Gates with Andy Parker and The Plainsmen

The song is also credited on this movie Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch which apparently is a movie cobbled together form segments of old Westerns.

£13-82 (p&p free) on EBay unfortunately this would be 'Region 1' so only playable on a 'region free' DVD player/computer.

But we're getting closer ;)

I found the song! It is indeed "Moseyin' Along" from Check Your Guns. You can listen to the song here (plus several other songs from the movie, which all sounded fairly nice to me) at the 36:37 mark of the audio player towards the bottom of the page.

Not having seen the movie, I can't add much of interest to the song in terms of background, but here's my transcription of the lyrics. Since the audio player can be a bit touchy to use, if anyone wants I can send you a snippet of the song to double check me.

MOSEYIN' ALONG
(Pete Gates)

[Words in braces sung by Eddie Dean]
(Words in parenthesis sung by Nancy Gates)

[You're as pretty as a palomino pony
You're a gal for whom a guy could write a song
But the cattle must be tended
And the fences must be mended
So I reckon I'll be moseyin' along]

(You're as handsome as a Sears and Roebuck model
You're a guy a gal could go for mighty strong
Though I may be empty handed
Wait until the day you're landed)
[Oh, I recon I'll be moseyin' along]

CHORUS
[Fair thee well] (goodbye), [you're the apple of my eye
But I must be on my way
Fair thee well] (goodbye), [oh, my darlin' don't you cry
I'll come back to you some day]

(You can stay away forever, see if I care
There are many other men among the throng
If you think my heart is breakin'
You were never more mistaken
And you may as well be moseyin' along)

[You're as touchy as a panther with a tooth-ache
And no matter what I say to you, it's wrong
So until I hear the rumor
That you're in a better humor
Then I reckon I'll be moseyin' along]

(Please forgive my fiery temper if it irks you
Won't you tell me once again about the song)
[I should take the time to write it
When your temper might ignite it
No, I reckon I'll be moseyin' along]

CHORUS

(When you do return I'll be the one to meet you
For you're still the man I go for mighty strong)
[Oh, I never should've tarried
You're still set on gettin' married
So I reckon I'll be moseyin' along]

What a difference 24 hours can make.
My excuse is that I didn't see the 2019 request.

Well done CND & Helen for helping the enquiry to 'mosey along'.

I have to use the same excuse.

The main credit goes to Nigel for finding the key piece of information which unlocked the mystery, and that made it easier to track downmore clues. Thanks cnd for finding the audio and transcribing the lyrics.

It's the more mysterious and obscure searches which make it interesting and more rewarding when we crack the mystery and find the answer.

Yay Mudcat Team!

Thank you mudcatters - you excell once again. My only question now is where on earth did I first hear this song. I can't imagine I ever saw one of the films - I'm not that old - unless it was some early T.V. when I was languishing with nothing else to do. Many thanks anyway.

Well, Murpholly, that might be a mystery we can't help you solve. :-)

You may have heard someone singing the song on the radio or at a concert, or a segment on a TV entertainment show perhaps. It obviously made an impression on you for you to remember it.

I wonder why so many cowboy films use Gilbert and Sullivan tunes for their background. Nearly every John Wayne has at least one.

If anyone is curious in seeing this movie, it's now available on Hulu if you have a subscription. Alternatively, a site I stumbled upon this afternoon will sell you a DVD copy of it for $10 or so (including US shipping) - haven't tried it myself so no comment on reliability. click

Sadly the site I got the lyrics from is dead and wasn't archived, and I've since had to get a new computer, so my download of it is no more.
