Delighted to see that the Saltburn Folk Festival www.saltburnfolkfestival.com is running this year after the sad loss of John Taylor.   Last year was the first time I'd been and am hoping to go again this year, work & holidays permitting.
Does anyone know if the autoharp/concertina duo who played in the Con club last year during the Music Hall are booked again for this year please? I'd love to hear them again, the whole festival was a joy, and they were the highlight for me.

Yes the Saltburn ff is ON in 2019 ~ under new management

I hope to be there although the Fred Jordan competition is suspended at least one year until it returns to a stable position

Hope to see at least some of you there once again

Ray

Thanks for the link Mr Red :) ... the artist list looks great though as I don't know what the duo were called I'm none the wiser... will just have to go to the music hall events and hope they're there. The programme page seems to show last year's listings, probably far too early for this year's to have been sorted out.

Guest Folkie the pair you describe are indeed wonderful, he autoharp, she concertina but my aged brain won't come up with their names right now. Try an email to someone at the Cutty Wren Folk Club, maybe George Featherstone.

If the programme on the website is last years, wouldn't the names be familiar - or descriptions of their style?

Hello Folkie and JHW, thanks for the lovely compliments :) just had it confirmed that we'll be joining Trevor Taylor again this year so please come and say hello and we can fit faces to names. We weren't in the programme last year, it was a bit a of a last minute arrangement but Trevor's going to give us a mention as his "backing group & hecklers" in this year's festival advert :). Ann & David

I'e heard those wonderful slow and steady sessions will be happening again this year. They have been running for the past 3 years or more. It's great to go to a session where everyone is made so welcome and tunes are played at a gentle pace. It certainly boosts confidence and stresses that we are all learning together. They are run by Angie who was the organiser of the wonderful Four Fools Folk Festival along with hubby Ken. That totally unique festival that truly lived up to its name of 'the little festival with the big heart'. We still miss it even now.

Might have wangled the Friday night & Saturday off work :) have got a B&B in Redcar lined up and the buses/trains look good to get to & from Saltburn, taxis were reasonable last year too. Just saving up for the ticket, food, beer and of course pressies to take back for the family for letting me out for the festival ..... folk music is not their thing but they indulge my whimsy :)

What it is, is that Ken Hall {of Ken and Marion} has picked up the task of keeping Saltburn ff going!

Last I was advised was that all who wish to appear as agreed will make the updated Guest list later ~ probably June? or July

Draft programme and line up now at: https://saltburnfolkfestival.com/

Bill Adair, Steve Turner, Edwina Hayes, Pete Morton, John Wrightson Band, Alan Reid, and Paul Lucas & Alan Young have been added.

Should be another great festival - well deserving of support.

The autoharp/concertina duo would be David and Ann Coulter from Whitby. I am reasonably sure they will be there again. Give our regards if you would. Nick and Christine

I will be there too - there is a big singaround in the Marine pub on the front on Thursday as a preamble to the Fest run by Cutty Wren. All parking along the front is FREE for whole weekend so bring your campers!! See you there Ray and all and sundry.

Spare a little thought for others as well please. Maybe using the festival campsite for your campers (would certainly help the festival more)? It's not a lot for those who have purchased festival tickets. Be truthful now, how many of you are going to support the festival and how many are just going for a free weekend which the festival is putting together?? Interesting thought please debate, truthfully now.

The answer for me is "Both"
I go for the freebies, but generously donate in the collecting bins.
I appreciate all the work that goes into putting this on - and I love it !!

Free events and free parking on the front for the weekend. That must be worth the cost of a couple of pints a day!

Incidentally, have looked at website and I feel that the camping fee of £17.50 per night is outrageously expensive !!

AND there is not much in the way of singarounds this year.

£80 w/ed ticket + £17.50 for 4 nights camping (one payment)

No w/ed ticket £17.50 per night and buy your own beer!

the camp site has security on board too

Singaround hrs Friday 8hrs, ~ Saturday up to 7hrs with Maritime sing

Sunday afternoon 4hrs pus evening as usual

Plenty of time and a number of concerts

Check the programme!! on line ~ with musicians sessions etc

In the 'good old days' ie my youth(ish) a big proportion of attenders at free singarounds especially did not indeed subscribe towards say Holmfirth Festival more than the fee for the Campsite. Few campervans then, not the money. Even at St.Chartier folks might push-bike (to the middle of France) just to be there but not go in to a paying event.

Sure they contributed little financially to keeping the show on the road but I enjoyed their company and they added to the music and colour of the festival.

The programme I've seen is like an ancient archaeological period timeline. The sort that killed off the dinosaurs.

Well it was a well attended festival ~ concert on the Friday night MC eed by me ~ well full

I was struggling with coughing ~ just held out!!

Saturday singaround had concerts elsewhere ~ thanks to Heather Woodhead, Ann Curran and Sue and Mark aka the Leeds Grove lot ~ Glenn and Lorna and dog and some quieter singers ~ all afternoon ~ lady from Dorset and others ~ all afternoon

Sunday still suffering had a great 2hr session with Shanties and similar with a good turn up and support from Glenn and Lorna, Graham and Lucinde Metcalfe, Monkey's Fist, Tom Smith and a duo (not sure where from) and John and Debbie Eaves and others

smallish venue but well worth it

No idea about anything else!

It was great despite torrential downpours on the Friday night but as I was at the Emanuel Hall for the evening concert it didn't matter. Maybe not as busy as last year but just as friendly and great performances from everyone, saw all the people I'd hoped to see and had a lovely couple of days. My thanks to the organisers, mc's, stewards, sound engineers and especially all the singers, musicians and dancers, definitely coming again if the festival's on next year.

Ken did a fantastic job, as did those who supported him (including wife Mariane), the MCs, stewards etc. The festival was intended as a celebration of John Taylor's life and work in establishing and running he festival (and many other things folk, besides)and was certainly a worthy tribute to him.

We had a great festival from the Thursday 'pre-meet' hosted by the Cutty Wren in the Marine Hotel through to the final sing around on Sunday evening. Some great singers, singing and songs at both those and other events.

In between, some great concerts, meet the artist events etc. Hard to pick favourites, although Bill Adair, Beth Burrows, Marie Little (as ever!) come immediately to mind.

We understand that a new website will 'go live' in December with any details for Saltbnrun 2020 ff released then.

The Marine was indeed good on Thursday, full and many good songa well sung. Less so was the new venue Post Box minipub Friday night. Good beer and congenial for a few singers but too small to stand the usual exit of folks before 10pm to the Cons for the Wilsons late show. The Post Box event folded then. I just had to drink beer till the last train.
