Mom would come in and sing us this particular rhyme:
9 o'clock the spelling lesson just begun,
Johnny shot his football just for fun.
It hit the teachers here with an awful crack
the teacher turned around and said" now who did that"?
Little Percy in the very first row raised his little hand and said
"teacher I know".( maybe a missing part here)
Johnny was told to stand with his face to the wall he said
"I don't want to" and he started to bawl.
"because if I do I'll take an awful chance
I got a great big hole in the seat of my pants".

And mom used to do a little dance around the room and we would all giggle and lay down on our pillows and she would give us all a kiss goodnight and turn off the light and say"Sleep tight and don't let the bedbugs bite". Being 74 now and reflecting back to my childhood I only wish the children today can maintain the memories of theirs as they get older. Street cars in Detroit JL Hudson's downtown going up on the 8th floor at Easter and coloring these huge wouldn't eggs for a egg coloring contest. Such memories such wonderful wonderful memories. I might enjoy this site there's so much to share

Hmm. I wonder is the requester's memory was mom-processed. I found this:

Little Johnny whispers to the teachers pride,
"You just wait till I get you outside".

Johnny's told to stand up with his face to the wall,
He says, "I don't wanna" and he tried to stall,
"If I stand up there I'll take an awful chance,
I've got a great big tear in the seat of my pants".

Teacher sends you home to wash your face and then,
you say, "Oh what's the use, it just gets dirty again".
Oh gee, I wanna be, in the little red school house.
