Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: GUEST,JoeG Date: 02 Jul 19 - 10:42 AM From discussion I had with the film maker after the showing in Thirsk he is very keen to take up any practical offers of screening - he has approached a number of cinemas and organisations but I am sure any other suggestions would be welcome to him |

Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: GUEST Date: 01 Jul 19 - 05:00 PM Whitby pulling their fingers out and putting on something that they haven't repeated ad-infinitum already? I was seriously considering cancelling my B&B booking considering the way the festival has been declining but as I wasted my London ticet for the film sitting in A&E I might give it the benefit of one more year after all. |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: gillymor Date: 30 Jun 19 - 08:02 AM It would be nice if they made the film available for digital rental. I'd like to see it here in SW Florida and I ain't getting any younger. There's not much chance of it being shown in a theater in these parts where anything even slightly esoteric never seems to arrive though I suppose I could lobby the public library for a screening. |

The list is hand-picked to include screens accessible from all regions of the UK, including local cinemas near the places where Butterworth lived, worked, had his music performed and collected folk songs. Wherever possible the director and contributors to the film will attend in order to participate in post-screening discussions. Do you want to book a screening of the George Butterworth film at your venue? We'd be delighted to bring our film to you. To discuss setting up a screening with optional filmmakers Q&A please contact the Producers on butterworthdoc@yahoo.com. A DVD Edition of the film may be published at a later stage. |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: GUEST,Joe G Date: 11 Apr 19 - 11:43 AM Mr Red you are correct it is THAT Malcolm Talor OBE Good idea re showing it at Towersey & Sidmouth It would go down well at Shrewsbury, Musicport and other festivals too I believe Shepley are showing it next month |

Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: Mr Red Date: 11 Apr 19 - 10:46 AM 12th May at Sherborne Theatre A wonderful little cinema. I will be there. I am often. Owned by a guy who always wanted to run a cinema. Literally a one man show. Though he has deputies (maybe a business partner). Even the ticket machine is vintage! |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: Steve Shaw Date: 11 Apr 19 - 04:54 AM It's supposed to be on at the Plough in Torrington on 25 May according to the film website but there's no mention of it on the Plough website. |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: GUEST,Peter Cripps Date: 11 Apr 19 - 04:14 AM The Gloucestershire premiere is on 12th May at Sherborne Theatre in Gloucester at 8.30pm |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: Mr Red Date: 11 Apr 19 - 03:35 AM Malcolm Taylor is credited with "Production Consultant" I wonder - is this the same Malcolm Taylor who served as the librarian at the Vaughan-Williams library for many years? |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: Mr Red Date: 11 Apr 19 - 03:04 AM in organising a screening or who can suggest potential venues Perhaps we should lobby Towersey Festival for it next year. After all they are screening "Fishermens Friends" this year. Or even Sidmouth. They put on "the Way of the Morris" and that was very well received. I think I will suggest it to both. |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: GUEST,JoeG Date: 10 Apr 19 - 11:01 AM It is not that easy to break into the larger cinema operators from what little I know from another film that a friend is involved with but I am pleased to see City Screen in York will be showing the Butterworth film. |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: G-Force Date: 10 Apr 19 - 10:36 AM One would have thought that any multiplex which has a small cinema and is prepared to give it suitable publicity in advance would be able to screen this for one day. Or is it all a closed shop? |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: GUEST,JoeG Date: 10 Apr 19 - 08:39 AM They would be interested in hearing from anyone who might be interested in organising a screening or who can suggest potential venues |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: GUEST,John Scott Cree Date: 10 Apr 19 - 04:07 AM It was good to see the information board and old film of him dancing, in the museum at Albert |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: GUEST,SB Date: 09 Apr 19 - 09:46 PM Maybe C#H could host a screening? |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: GUEST,SB Date: 09 Apr 19 - 09:40 PM Premiered at the British Library!!!! Well that was a well kept secret. Not even announced on the TradSong or TradTunes Yahoo groups, nor even on the Morris list, nor even on the EFDSS Facebook page. DEAFAS again I guess. |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 09 Apr 19 - 12:46 PM Maybe Edinburgh Folk Club could take it on? I think their usual venue seats about 80, would that be enough? Otherwise could they do it at the Cameo or Filmhouse? |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: G-Force Date: 09 Apr 19 - 12:18 PM No screening anywhere convenient for us, so we'll just have to wait for the DVD. |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: GUEST,JoeG Date: 08 Apr 19 - 05:29 PM Seeing the film reminded me of a very spooky incident just after we moved to York. I was looking for my new doctor's surgery when I came across a Blue Plaque marking the location of Butterworth's York home when he was a child. I hadn't known that he had lived here. The spooky bit was when I realised the date and time when I was standing there looking at it. It was 11am on 11 November! |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: GUEST,JoeG Date: 08 Apr 19 - 05:20 PM Jack - they are hoping to bring it to Scotland - just really needs a venue who will take a chance on it. There was a decent turnout at Thirsk though chatting to the people who run the place afterwards it looked marginal whether it had worked out for them. It is a magnificent film so I hope you do get to see it. The sound at Thirsk for such a small community run theatre was tremendous and it was blissful having Banks of Green Willow and his other orchestral works wash over us |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: GUEST,JoeG Date: 08 Apr 19 - 05:16 PM Sorry JHW I had meant to post on here before the Thirsk screening but forgot. The cinema in York is fine - right in the centre on Coney Street if you know that? Got a nice cafe / bar too |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: Jack Campin Date: 08 Apr 19 - 05:07 PM I hope somebody brings it to Scotland. Looks good. |
Subject: RE: George Butterworth Film From: GUEST,JHW Date: 08 Apr 19 - 03:08 PM Thanks for this. Shame I didn't know as Thirsk is easy and I know the Ritz. Might get down to York though don't know that venue. |
Subject: George Butterworth Film From: GUEST,JoeG Date: 08 Apr 19 - 11:55 AM I can't recall if this has been mentioned previously but an independent film maker has made a quite wonderful film about the life of George Butterworth. It had its first northern screening in Thirsk yesterday and I was lucky enough to be able to get to see it. Incredibly moving - I adore his orchestral music and in the context of the film it was even more engaging. There was a lot of detail about his folk song collecting and morris dancing activities. The website has screening details - I do urge you to try to get to see it! Film website |
