Subject: Martin Carthy's Internet presence
From: Jack Campin

According to something I've seen on FB, Martin Carthy has deactivated his websites and is thinking of withdrawing from FB and Twitter as well.

I'm not about to get voyeuristic about why - it's his decision and he has no obligation to explain. But I am curious about what used to be there - I never looked.

Plus we're all getting old.

Martin did what he did with folksong.
I did what I did what i did.
Jim carroll did what he did.
etc.
Its not nice shouting abuse at old men. Or serious critical assessments. Or however you classify harsh criticism.

After fifty or sixty years...we don't get another go at getting it right. That's what we did. Nobody forces you to listen.

Gratuitous personal abuse is always a good reason to leave, Who needs the angst, there are loads of nice people in the world that I haven't met yet.

He didn't mention any abuse. He simply said he couldn't see any point to having the sites. I've never looked at them, so I couldn't imagine what their original purpose might have been.

For a lot of performers a website is simply promo for their next gig or product, so if you're mostly retired you can see why such a site might have served its purpose. If he had an archive of his life's work, that would be a greater loss.

An artist's official website us the first place I go to find a gig list. Or, just as useful, and harder to find out elsewhere, that there are no upcoming gigs.

Eliza's website is a good example.

well lets's hope he wasn't abused. either way, he's more than done his bit.

if he wants to comment or publish his creations, I'm sure his many friends will help him do that.

I didn't know he had his own websites --
I always looked at his manager's website
for whether or not he had performances coming up.

I also didn't now of a recent website of Martin's, and the family website watersoncarthy.com discontinued in May 2017 or earlier.

But Kevin Boyd's Martin Carthy fan websites "Come Sing It Plain" and "The Martin Carthy Broadcast Archive" seem to have gone recently - when I go to them I get a standard Wordpress page telling me "This site is marked private by its owner."   Maybe that's what Jack was referring to?

Ah yes, this is what Kevin Boyd wrote on Facebook yesterday:

I've deactivated both of my Martin Carthy websites. Not sure yet if it's temporary or permanent - waiting to see how I feel about it but currently unsure what the point of either of them was/is. Twitter & Facebook remain for now but will probably also go if the websites permanently disappear. ?

That's very sad. "Come Sing It Plain" was my main source of all information on Martin Carthy if I couldn't find it in my collection of his albums.

I had a Fakebook page and it got closed down because they judged it a business, an organisation, etc, I didn't use my real name. And some people were amazed that I didn't use my real birthdate. Would you advertise, across the world, half the data that your bank require?

Mind you there was one person who posted some pretty egregious stuff - it was no loss. I never Twittered.

If Martin Carthy says he can't see the need, I can understand.

Fakebook is a time waster and it can become the biggest consumer of your time, because Fakebook set the agenda. They decide what you see, and they have algorithms that don't fit your interests, they fit what sells. I got shown endless pictures of cars for sale - Martin doesn't drive. (or didn't last I heard).

I don't do F'book either - but, out of curiosity - why would an account get closed down because it was a business? I know shopkeepers, artists, musicians and other who don't have websites, but do their business via F'book.

Reinhard Zierke maintains a very nice Martin Carthy page at Mainly Norfolk:

Can anybody find us a link to archives of the discontinued Carthy Website(s)?

Here's something: http://web.archive.org/web/20180707012937/http://martincarthy.com/

Just to clarify a couple of things:

Come Sing It Plain... has been my personal Martin Carthy fansite for about the last 18 years. I’ve always been at pains to make it clear it’s an unofficial fansite but there are only so many times you can repeat the same mantra and eventually you have to choose to ignore the regular emails that invariably start with, “Hi Martin, I saw you at the Dog & Duck in 1972...”

The Martin Carthy Broadcast Archive is pretty much what you might expect from the name – an attempt to catalogue as many of Martin’s radio and TV performances as possible.

Both were/are entirely my own work and Martin has absolutely no involvement with either of them – I’m not entirely sure he knows they exist and would be astonished if he even cared!

I have Facebook and Twitter pages I use to publicise the sites and occasionally post related content. I recently posted on these my intention to discontinue both sites. This was a personal decision to scale back my general social media presence – something I’ve been thinking of doing for several months - and a reflection on the fact that I think the main site has perhaps run its course (or maybe, more to the point, that I’ve run out of interesting and innovative ways of engaging with it).

On reflection, and based on feedback I’ve received, perhaps this was an overreaction. I hadn’t realised how many people value the work I’ve put into the sites over the years and it’s been humbling to hear from some of those people over the last few days.

So, the plan now is to keep both sites available for at least the foreseeable future but there are likely to be fewer (if any) updates. I’ll decide whether to retain presences on Facebook and Twitter in due course.

I hope this makes sense

Cheers
Kev

Nice sites, Kevin. I've certainly read carthyonline before - it would be shame if they disappeared off the web. But it's a problem if you post infrequently and want to alert potential readers like me. I don't have a Twitter or Facebook account, so I probably wouldn't see an announcement there. Best way is to mention it here!

I see that quite a few of Martin's gigs are listed here:
http://alanbearmanmusic.co.uk/artists/martin-carthy/
But not the fastnet one.

Which nicely illustrates why Martin should have a website - even if it's a single page.

Thanks for re-opening Come Sing It Plain, Kevin, it's a wonderful ressource!

I am an old-stlye web user from before all this newfangled "social" media stuff. It is useful for performing artists promoting their albums and shows. But for an archive site like Mainly Norfolk - which is mainly about what's available and thus about the past - I don't see much sense in blabbing about it on hyped news sites.

Subject: RE: Martin Carthy's Internet presence
From: Mr Red

but, out of curiosity - why would an account get closed down because it was a business?

It was a personal account. I used it to gain info for updating mister.red (purely non-commercial)- its name was Mist Er-Red. They offered to change it to a business account.

In the wake of Russian abuses thereof they were increasing their activity, but being in-adept they went after soft targets. As if the St Petersberg Mafia aren't one step ahead!

Yea, Yea we understand the process. It closed because I refused to give them any personal details that could be used to triangulate to anything like a bank account. Security begins at home! Not at Fakebook. Big targets attract big players and many of them. It only takes one success. Apologies are no barrier to the miscreants.

Martin is better off without it for those reasons and all the others listed herein.

When I signed up for Facebook a trillion years ago, and tried to leave the birth date blank, a nag-box popped up and scolded me that I HAD to write in a birthday.

So I gave them one. Hee hee hee.

Shortly afterwards, one of my cousins PM'd me that I was lookin' pretty good for a 96-year-old.

@Sandman
Could it be that you gave ABMusic the full postal address of the venue when making the booking?

Without local knowledge it seems quite reasonable to assume that an address of Ballydehob, Skibbereen, Co Cork is in Skibbereen.
