Subject: BS: Winter has arrived! (GoT) From: Dave the Gnome Date: 17 Apr 19 - 09:14 AM Surprised no one has started this thread yet. Episode 1 of Series 8 of Game of Thrones aired 3 days ago! I binge watched the previous 7 series to make sure my memory was up to date before watching the new one. Worth every minute. Without giving anything away to those who have not yet seen it my favourite line was "My eyes have always been blue!" Also worth noting that the Ed mentioned by the whores is supposed to be the Ed you say singing in series 7. Jim Carroll would appreciate it :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (GoT) From: punkfolkrocker Date: 17 Apr 19 - 09:29 AM We'll wait and binge this season when it's all finshed and as usuall be completely confused for the first couple of episodes until we partially remember who's who and what they've done to each other... Now to spend the next few weeks in a bunker completely shut off from spoilers.. But there'll always be some inconsiderate media dick who smugly drops unexpected major spoilers into completely unrelated news items... |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (GoT) From: Dave the Gnome Date: 17 Apr 19 - 09:50 AM Watch each episode as it airs and then binge watch the lot as well :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: Donuel Date: 18 Apr 19 - 10:37 PM Today I saw a shelf full of Game of Thrones Oreo cookies at the store. I haven't seen action figures, possibly because half of them are already dead. |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: Dave the Gnome Date: 01 May 19 - 04:00 AM Not sorry exactly but surprised so many main characters survived. SPOILER ALERT. DO NOT READ ANY MORE IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN IT! Mind you, the loss of the Dothraki horde is a major blow :-( I did predict how the night king would end some weeks back and then thought, nah, they won't use the same ploy as Tolkien to remove the major threat on the battlefield. And then they did it twice! Just goes to show that the obvious choice is the right one :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: keberoxu Date: 12 May 19 - 04:36 PM For me personally it is still really odd that the adaptation is winding down before the author-of-origin gets his series of books completed. Yes, I know that 'GRRM' has been actively engaged in the television show adaptation, but still! |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: Dave the Gnome Date: 21 May 19 - 04:35 AM I thought it ended quite well. They certainly could have stretched out this series for another couple of episodes but, all in all, they did a reasonable job. Leaves a number of possibilities for sequels but I got the impression they ran out of either money, steam or both! |
Subject: RE: BS: THE MORAL OF THE STORY From: Donuel Date: 21 May 19 - 06:40 AM Democracy was laughed off the stage. The rightful king was 'locked up' in Castle Black. The chosen King is a spooky all seeing legend with divine right power that is all stories and LEAVES action up to an old commitee. Female leadership was harshly 'punished' for having PMS. Yep this is an ending seemingly bought and paid for by fascist Trumpers Only the Dragon behaved with integrity. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: Dave the Gnome Date: 21 May 19 - 06:55 AM ***Spoiler alert. Don't read any further if you have not seen it*** The dragon's reasoning was good. On seeing his mother sitting on a throne made of swords followed by seeing her with a sword stuck in her, he decided to burn all the other swords in the throne. :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: Donuel Date: 21 May 19 - 09:10 AM If you looked like George Martin you might be compelled to torture, kill, rape and dislike women in your writting. I hope he got his break up out of his system by writting GOT. Perhaps I am not viewing Fantasy in its proper light. Like Spaw said, this sounds like it is about racing from toilet to toilet. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: Mrrzy Date: 21 May 19 - 10:38 AM Yeah, well, they only call it PMS because Mad Cow Disease was already taken. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: robomatic Date: 21 May 19 - 09:20 PM No spoilers but I'm going to talk about the final HBO episode. Apparently George R.R. Martin the author of the written series has been fine with the HBO finish which was not written by him. The video series departed from the written series a couple of seasons ago. The written series was still expanding with more characters and places and conflicts. Strong points of the series was the fantastic visualization of the cities, keeps, structures including the Wall, and the best dragons ever cast. I didn't see a credit for 'dragon wrangler' but there were literally hundreds of little names flying by musta missed it. Weak points were few. I really didn't buy the whole 'Hodor' episode. Really hokey. The ending was good considering the immense number of stories and sub-plots that had to be brought together, resolve, or successfully ignored. If George Double R (first of his name) thinks he can resolve his version, more power to him and he will deserve a 'Ser'. May he live to give it a good finish. Then it can be filmed all over again, sorta like what happened with LOTR. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: Dave the Gnome Date: 24 May 19 - 01:45 AM Wearing my new GoT T-shirt today. Stark emblem with an Arya silhouette over, underlined by the words "Not Today". If I am asked for something at work, I shall just point :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: Mrrzy Date: 24 May 19 - 09:27 AM I like the women he writes, they are full-fledged people. Women are raped a lot in reality. He [Martin] tortures and kills men and women fairly equally. I don't het from the books that he hates women, just that he doesn't sugarcoat war. |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: keberoxu Date: 25 May 19 - 10:54 AM The other thing about George R R Martin is that he promised his readers not only Winter, but Spring. It's telling that the wildly successful television series called a halt after getting through Winter. Wonder if the Author and the television people negotiated an understanding / compromise there. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: robomatic Date: 26 May 19 - 02:09 PM I think the character of Cersei was severely short-shrifted. Early in the series she coins the term: "Game of Thrones" and she gets many memorable scenes and quotes (I especially liked her rejoinder to Littlefinger's attempt at bragging: "Knowledge is Power"). She is the architect of a lot of the decision making out of King's Landing, until she runs afoul of the encroaching religious establishment. She rightfully owned the moral complexities and ambiguities of the series, and deserved a bigger say in the development, which was denied her. In order to bring the tendrils and threads together to tie a string round the bouquet at the end she was turned into a simplistic baddie. And she had an ignominious end as a minor character that she did not deserve. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: Mrrzy Date: 28 May 19 - 05:56 PM She did not deserve to die in the arms of her beloved, that's for sure. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: Dave the Gnome Date: 30 May 19 - 08:45 AM I watched the last Thronecast, the documentary about making Series 8 and my favourite episode, Battle of the Bastards the other day. That will do me for a while now. I may cancel my NowTV subscription and wait until it streams on Netflix or Amazon :-) In the meanwhile... Good Omens starts on Friday :-D |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: punkfolkrocker Date: 03 Jun 19 - 06:05 PM Just finished watching it all over one week... Managed to avoid any spoilers, .. a miracle...!!! apart from hearing that spoiled teenage fanboys were unhappy and having a massive sulk with this final season.. even a Guardian TV critic agreed with them...??? Personally, I found it to be a satisfactory and intelligent conclusion... Now to think about reading this thread... So what is all the fuss about... It's much better than the overhyped final Deadwood TV movie... |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: punkfolkrocker Date: 03 Jun 19 - 06:22 PM I'll add.. me and the mrs expected the final episode might be shit if internet buzz was anything to go by; so we debated how it could go so wrong... But, reality was a good thoughtful finale for mature adults... Not perfect, but no way near as bad as anticipated... |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: punkfolkrocker Date: 04 Jun 19 - 12:46 PM So I just googled "what fans hate about got finale"... How much more of that immature entitled tripe can I be bothered reading... |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: keberoxu Date: 17 Nov 21 - 07:16 PM and two years later, people are still binge-watching the whole series. Especially during those sorrowful times when there is a lockdown and it isn't safe to be out and about. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: Charmion Date: 18 Nov 21 - 12:10 PM Y'know, I thought I would watch that series when I subscribed to the Canadian streaming service that carries HBO, but whenever I consider it, I just can't bring myself to tune in. I read all the books when they were published and found it fascinating, but parts of the story are so grim and violent that I could hardly get through them in print, when I could flip to another chapter to see who survived (if anyone) before going back to catch up on the details. Some of the characters -- Roose Bolton, for example -- are so repellent that I emphatically don't want to see them brought to life. If the HBO version were not even gorier and sadder than the original, it might have more appeal, but it is, so it doesn't. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: Dave the Gnome Date: 18 Nov 21 - 04:48 PM Roose Bolton was not as bad as his bastard son, Ramsay, in the series. I read the books but can't remember if he was worse there :-( Roose was led astray by the red woman. Religion has a lot to answer for even in fantasy worlds! Ramsay was just a bastard in more ways than one :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: keberoxu Date: 18 Nov 21 - 06:00 PM I watched the broadcast of the opening episode. Little Bran scrambling about and climbing walls like a little monkey. Then the episode comes to an end with Bran getting pushed out the tower window and CRASH. I couldn't stand to watch Bran's father being beheaded. It does seem to me that Bran's encounter in the far northern caves with the spooky guy who is part tree root, part raven, and part human goes differently in the book than it does in the TV adaptation. And I got totally confused and lost concerning, what were they, the children of the forest creating the Night King? I just gave up. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: Donuel Date: 18 Nov 21 - 06:15 PM Its a world of so many pandemics and predations the soil is a rich and fertile compost of people, slaves, zombies, rotting white walkers, stone people and dragon barbecue. All in all its better than nuke plants, mines, chemical plants and refineries. I liked the charactor based on an old elevator joke. Hodor |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: keberoxu Date: 18 Nov 21 - 06:18 PM Something I just read that was rather reassuring to me. In Season One, an arranged marriage took place between Daenerys Targaeryen and Khal Drogo of the, what were they, Dothraki? The wedding night, in the TV show, included raping the bride. George R. R. Martin, author of the books: "Why did the wedding scene change from the consensual seduction ... to the brutal rape of [actress] Emilia Clarke? We never discussed it. It made it worse, not better." (interview from 2020) |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter has arrived! (Game of Thrones) From: keberoxu Date: 20 Nov 21 - 11:53 PM and for what it's worth, GRRM let slip that the writing pace on that next-to-be-published installment in the book series is "hugely behind" (there are some bad jokes waiting to crawl out of that quote) |
