My mother insists that her sons (and daughter) know how to iron, sew on a button and do other very basic sewing, and cook a simple meal. She did not care if we sang while doing those things as long as no other damage was done.

By shuddering coincidence, so did I today, leeneia. It's half an hour to Specsavers from my house. However, I let the car radio do the singing. But when I got home and was cleaning the toilets I sang Life On Mars, as we refer to the toilet brush as "the Bowie" in our house, since, from a certain angle, it resembles one of Bowie's early hairstyles. We regard the avoidance of leaving fragments of "dead otter" on the Bowie as paramount... We know how to do euphemisms in our house...

Why is this question even being asked? Anybody can sing while doing any household chore.

Today I had to take a long drive to pick up new eyeglasses, and I sang for much of the way.

Sleeping Bags unhygenic?

So washing mine ready for the Upton upon Severn Folk Festival this weekend was either a waste of time or just plain lacking in etiquette!

When will I ever get the hang of life?

There were probably some television advertisements in the '50s and '60s featuring women singing while ironing. Probably dancing, too, though dancing with an electric iron would take some pretty careful choreography. Having Susie Homemaker get tangled up in an electrical cord and fall flat on her face is not a good way to advertise laundry products.

I think it's a bit of a cheek folkies lecturing anyone else on personal hygene...

Just consider the type of music yer average old 1960s stinky hippy student is likely to to be fond of...???

At least punk vinyl fashions were easy to wipe the gob off with a damp cloth...

This thread was started to counter the discussion in the Chantey thread of women singing songs that historically are the purview of men, but history is good at (eventually) illuminating the stories of many women who did "men's work," they either hid in men's clothes or simply took on the job where they were barely remarked on and it never became a statistic to draw from until much digging into the record. (Go over to Facebook or Twitter and search #AMightyGirl)

The thread that spawned this one should have ended with the second post:

I think this is my last prejudice. I know they can sing them - but should they?
Anyone else got any strong opinions?
FloraG.

From: Big Al Whittle - PM

yes anyone should sing whatever they feel like. that's how we arrive a folk music. it a very democratic process.

The admission of a prejudice should also be a clue. Something the OP recognizes and considers something to remedy.

Should women architects/airline pilots/surgeons/nurses/teachers/truck drivers/heavy equipment operators/chefs/clerks/and all other careers sing?

"Don't know of anyone who by choice would sleep in a sleeping bag - awfully unhygienic."

I did when I was a student.. 2 zipped together forming a double bag..
very convenient and comfy for overnight lady guests..

As for hygene.. why would a student ever consider that...!!!???

I washed my T shirts in the same little hand basin in my room
I peed in during the nights...

Well I did say "Basic Life Skills" Sandman. I dare say that there are many other useful things but the above list means that if you have mastered those skills you are not reliant on other people to do things for you, you are not an imposition. Just thought of another - the ability to sew.

As to Chess, why not draughts? All children play games and practically all teach you how to solve problems, think ahead and anticipate what others might do.

Don't know of anyone who by choice would sleep in a sleeping bag - awfully unhygienic.

In the original post the singing is being done by the person watching the woman doing her ironing (she doesn't seem to be doing anyone else's ironing, and the singer seems to have nothing better to do).

Years ago - many, many years ago - I used to listen to Ivor Cutler on 'Monday Night at Home', on the Home Service, while ironing. Nowadays I hardly ever do ironing and 'Monday Night at Home' is a distant memory. However, if I ever do any dressmaking again the iron will be used at every stage.

A. Iron Man is a superhero but Iron Woman is an instruction.

Incidentally why women? Some of us (single) blokes can drive an iron. No singing aloud?

The only ironing gets done in our house
is the wife pressing her work clothes weekday mornings.. nothing else.. ever..

It's my job to maintain the iron,
ensuring this newest one doesn't end up with coiled knots in the cable
splitting and exposing inner wires.
Particularly in areas where the cable has been burnt through and melted..

This iron is heading for the record, so far 3 years survived...

Though she did kill the toaster last week...

Ring him up while he's ironing...

Sorry about that.

I've told Mrs Steve that the day she pops her clogs is the day I take the iron and ironing board to the skip. Never ironed, can't iron, never will iron.

Does anybody iron anymore?
Does anybody really care?
If so, I can't imagine why
Cause wrinkles never made me cry.
(not giving up my day job...well, I wouldn't, if I had one.)

I'd sing sea shanties.
Maybe in a breathy girly voice. Fire Marengo, a la "Happy Birthday", as done by Marilyn for JFK)

'Twas on a Monday morning
That I beheld my darling,
She looked so neat and charming
In every high degree.
She looked so neat and nimble-o,
A-washing of her linen-o.

Chorus (repeated after each verse):
Dashing away with the smoothing iron,
Dashing away with the smoothing iron,
Dashing away with the smoothing iron,
She stole my heart away.

'Twas on a Tuesday morning
That I beheld my darling,
She looked so neat and charming
In every high degree.
She looked so neat and nimble-o,
A-hanging out her linen-o.

'Twas on a Wednesday morning
That I beheld my darling,
She looked so neat and charming
In every high degree.
She looked so neat and nimble-o,
A-starching of her linen-o.

'Twas on a Thursday morning
That I beheld my darling,
She looked so neat and charming
In every high degree.
She looked so neat and nimble-o,
A-ironing of her linen-o.

'Twas on a Friday morning
That I beheld my darling
She looked so neat and charming
In every high degree.
She looked so neat and nimble-o,
A-folding of her linen-o.

'Twas on a Saturday morning
That I beheld my darling,
She looked so neat and charming
In every high degree.
She looked so neat and nimble-o,
A-airing of her linen-o.

'Twas on a Sunday morning
That I beheld me darling,
She looked so neat and charming
In every high degree.
She looked so neat and nimble-o,
A-wearing of her linen-o.
