Subject: Lyr Req: It's a boy, it's a boy From: Tattie Bogle Date: 06 May 19 - 06:01 PM Now we have a new 7th in line to the UK throne, following the announcement that a boy has been born to Meghan and Harry, and this old song from the 50s? 60s? leapt into my head: "It's a boy, it's a boy, it's a bonny bouncing boy, There's never been such a boy was born before...." At which point my memory fades... Does anyone else remember it, who sang it, more words? The chorus finished up with "It's a boy, it's a boy, it's a boy!!!!!" I have searched the DT, YouTube and Google, with no results at all, apart from a ref in one book to a new father singing it as he weaved his way back from the pub following the birth of his son. (Not the trad song "The Bonny Boy"!) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: It's a boy, it's a boy From: GUEST,Pseudonymous Date: 07 May 19 - 01:39 PM You beat me to it, Jim. Apparently one paper is thinking of baby names that link the USA and the UK together. Eg for girls, so bad guess, Eleanor (of Aquitaine and Roosevelt). Suggestions for linking names provided by readers included 'Iraq War', 'Tesco Walmart' and 'Cambridge Analytica'. Any other bright ideas? Wo Blair? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: It's a boy, it's a boy From: Tattie Bogle Date: 09 May 19 - 03:50 PM Sorry for not responding to your links earlier Johnny Jay: no, not that one: older than The Who. I'm thinking someone like Doris Day, Alma Cogan, Connie Francis - that sort of era. It's still an earworm since I first posted the request! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: It's a boy, it's a boy From: Tattie Bogle Date: 13 May 19 - 12:24 PM The book reference of the Dad singing it after his child was born gives the year of said birth as 1958. ( from the book: Because of You I Live with my Passions - by Di Joseph.) By strange coincidence, this birth took place in my home town of Edinburgh! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: It's a boy, it's a boy From: GUEST,Alan born in 1958 in London, England Date: 07 Sep 19 - 01:56 PM Great, that's the song! Thanks Starship. Somebody in England must have recorded it the same year. Any ideas? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: It's a boy, it's a boy From: GUEST,Starship Date: 07 Sep 19 - 06:15 PM Pleased to hear that. All I was able to locate regarding the song is what's mentioned on the 45 rpm record label. Rosemary Clooney left Columbia Records in 1958 and went to MGM which released a few of her songs in that same year. I found mention (Discogs?) of another release in Italy, but no info about that recording. And all I can find about the songwriter is that his/her name is Roberts which is credited on the MGM record label. That I found in Google Images because the label pictured in the YouTube thing is fuzzy. It seems the song wasn't a 'hit' at the time, so info is somewhat scarce. If this is really truly important to you I will continue looking, but I'm not holding much hope for success locating an English/GB/UK singer doing it. Let me know. Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: It's a boy, it's a boy From: Tattie Bogle Date: 08 Sep 19 - 12:27 PM Well done, Starship! Yes, that's the one I meant when I started the thread, and yes, Rosemary Clooney it was, though it used to get played a lot on the radio programme "Children's Favourites" in about that era - presumably when anyone had a new baby brother born they requested it! I don't think there was an English "cover" of it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: It's a boy, it's a boy From: GUEST,Starship Date: 08 Sep 19 - 01:02 PM However, it was your mention of the Doris Day, Alma Cogan, Connie Francis era that did it. Was nice to hear her again. I remember her from the 1950s when she was on the jukebox. Thanks for the memories. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: It's a boy, it's a boy From: Jim Carroll Date: 12 Jun 20 - 03:09 AM I think the song Tattie is looking for is one that's been bugging me for a long time - still cant remember what it's called It came with a batch of 'mock-Italian' songs in the (probably early) 1950s - a man inviting all his friends to celebrate the birth of his son Take-a da drink, have a cigar, everything is free Say waddaya think, don't the baby look like me It's a boy, it's a boy, it's the first but not the last To have a bigger family, you've gotta work-s fast Other songs like 'Pappa Loves Mambo' and Que Sirra, Sirra, were popular around the same time - Doris Day springs to mind Jim |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: It's a boy, it's a boy From: cnd Date: 12 Jun 20 - 06:48 PM The mentions of the mock Italian singing immediately made me think of Rosemary Clooney (a la Mambo Italiano) and it looks like she does have a song called "It's a Boy." Sadly, that song's not online, though ironically the B side, The Loudenboomer Bird, is. No guarantee that it's the right song, but it seems right to me. Does the Doris Day reference mean it was a female singer? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: It's a boy, it's a boy From: Tattie Bogle Date: 13 Jun 20 - 05:53 PM Starship already gave the right answer/song I was meaning back on 7th September 2019: check the YouTube in the link there, so it IS online in that sense. And no, it wasn't Doris Day, but it was about the same era. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: It's a boy, it's a boy From: GUEST,Nanna Deb Date: 01 Sep 20 - 01:18 PM I have this 78 record stored in the shed. My mum & dad bought it when my brother was born in 1959. The song often comes into my head. I will dig it out and see who sung it. |
Subject: ADD:A New Song on the Birth of the Prince of Wales From: Mrrzy Date: 01 Sep 20 - 04:03 PM AhAH! A NEW SONG ON THE BIRTH OF THE PRINCE OF WALES.* There’s a pretty fuss and bother both in country and in town, Since we have got a present, and an heir unto the Crown, A little Prince of Wales so charming and so sly, And the ladies shout with wonder, What a pretty little boy! He must have a little musket, a trumpet and a kite, A little penny rattle, and silver sword so bright, A little cap and feather with scarlet coat so smart, And a pretty little hobby horse to ride about the park. Prince Albert he will often take the young Prince on his lap, And fondle him so lovingly while he stirs about the pap, He will pin on his flannel before he takes his nap, Then dress him out so stylish with his little clouts and cap. He must have a dandy suit to strut about the town, John Bull must rake together six or seven thousand pound, You’d laugh to see his daddy, at night he homewards runs, With some peppermint or lollipops, sweet cakes and sugar plums. He will want a little fiddle, and a little German flute, A little pair of stockings and a pretty pair of boots, With a handsome pair of spurs, and a golden headed cane, And a stick of barley sugar, as long as Drury Lane. An old maid ran through the palace, which did the nobs surprize, Bawling out, he’s got his daddy’s mouth, his mammy’s nose and eyes, He will be as like his daddy as a frigate to a ship, If he’d only got mustachios upon his upper lip. Now to get these little niceties the taxes must be rose, For the little Prince of Wales wants so many suits of clothes, So they must tax the frying pan, the windows and the doors, The bedsteads and the tables, kitchen pokers, and the floors. * This event took place November 9, 1841. |
