Subject: Lyr Req: It's a boy, it's a boy
From: Tattie Bogle
Date: 06 May 19 - 06:01 PM

Now we have a new 7th in line to the UK throne, following the announcement that a boy has been born to Meghan and Harry, and this old song from the 50s? 60s? leapt into my head:
"It's a boy, it's a boy, it's a bonny bouncing boy,
There's never been such a boy was born before...."
At which point my memory fades... Does anyone else remember it, who sang it, more words? The chorus finished up with "It's a boy, it's a boy, it's a boy!!!!!"
I have searched the DT, YouTube and Google, with no results at all, apart from a ref in one book to a new father singing it as he weaved his way back from the pub following the birth of his son. (Not the trad song "The Bonny Boy"!)

You beat me to it, Jim.
Apparently one paper is thinking of baby names that link the USA and the UK together. Eg for girls, so bad guess, Eleanor (of Aquitaine and Roosevelt). Suggestions for linking names provided by readers included 'Iraq War', 'Tesco Walmart' and 'Cambridge Analytica'.
Any other bright ideas?

Wo Blair?

Sorry for not responding to your links earlier Johnny Jay: no, not that one: older than The Who. I'm thinking someone like Doris Day, Alma Cogan, Connie Francis - that sort of era. It's still an earworm since I first posted the request!

The book reference of the Dad singing it after his child was born gives the year of said birth as 1958. ( from the book: Because of You I Live with my Passions - by Di Joseph.)
By strange coincidence, this birth took place in my home town of Edinburgh!

His eyes are very blue, his face is very red

Great, that's the song! Thanks Starship. Somebody in England must have recorded it the same year. Any ideas?

Pleased to hear that. All I was able to locate regarding the song is what's mentioned on the 45 rpm record label. Rosemary Clooney left Columbia Records in 1958 and went to MGM which released a few of her songs in that same year. I found mention (Discogs?) of another release in Italy, but no info about that recording. And all I can find about the songwriter is that his/her name is Roberts which is credited on the MGM record label. That I found in Google Images because the label pictured in the YouTube thing is fuzzy. It seems the song wasn't a 'hit' at the time, so info is somewhat scarce. If this is really truly important to you I will continue looking, but I'm not holding much hope for success locating an English/GB/UK singer doing it. Let me know. Thanks.

Well done, Starship! Yes, that's the one I meant when I started the thread, and yes, Rosemary Clooney it was, though it used to get played a lot on the radio programme "Children's Favourites" in about that era - presumably when anyone had a new baby brother born they requested it! I don't think there was an English "cover" of it.

However, it was your mention of the Doris Day, Alma Cogan, Connie Francis era that did it. Was nice to hear her again. I remember her from the 1950s when she was on the jukebox. Thanks for the memories.
