Subject: RE: Story of Paul Robeson - 1981 From: keberoxu Date: 11 May 19 - 09:53 PM My music teacher was African-American and was taken to hear Paul Robeson and to shake his hand: "I got to look UP," was how my teacher put it. One of my teacher's great inspirations: "When one door closed, [Robeson] opened two." His Othello is recorded, and after listening to his recording, I was -- and am -- in awe. He makes Olivier sound like a bad dream. |
Subject: RE: Story of Paul Robeson - 1981 From: Jim Carroll Date: 12 May 19 - 02:27 AM One of the the most cherished records in my collection is an early Topic 78" made as a description of the Peekskill Riots - commentary by Pete Seeger and Howard Fast and singing by Seeger and Robeson - I later acquired an early edition of the book I have digitised the record and the book, if anybody would like a copy I also have the book, 'The Story of Unity Theatre', by Colin Chambers, which inlus=des some descriptions of Robeson's association with that Theate - The Cover has a photograph of him and a very young Alie Bass in the 1938 Unity production of 'Plant in the Sun' Jim Carroll |

Subject: RE: Story of Paul Robeson - 1981 From: Felipa Date: 12 May 19 - 05:17 PM Actor and writer Tayo Aleko doesn't have Robeson's characteristic deep voice, but he does a good show, and post-show audience discussions. You can find some excerpts of "Call Mr Robeson" on youtube. Tayo's own page is http://www.tayoalukoandfriends.com/robeson/ |
