Subject: BS: US (California) Law Question
From: wysiwyg

Assume that a nice nonprofit founder hashas generously arranged for a young farmette-operating couple to stay on the nonprofit's property,
in an unused RV, after escaping a wildfire that destroyed the home they had been renting from someone else (and the farmette ^buildings" they'd created for the critters without permission).

The animals that survived the fire are included in this short term kindness, too-- because the NP does farm programming-- as long as the couple reimburses for expenses.

The couple turn out to scam artists and costs are mounting. The couple is asked to leave and to remove the animals, to no avail.

The nonprofit dude then says, about this, "My EC has put a Stop Loss order in place."
.
.

I need to understand whether this means that the tenant is about to receive notice that the animals are going to be sold off to to recover the expenses, since the tenants haven't kept the agreement, have damaged the RV, have not returned calls to resolve any of it, and have zero income prospects.

The NP dude can't explain this right now, and Google only gave me stock market trading results. (As in financial investing, not livestock.)

Can any legal beagle help? (Of course I hope it does mean that.)

~Susan

What's an EC? Executive committee?

Part of the mystery. Probably, from the context, or Executive Comptroller, Chancellor....

Here it is, excerpted verbatim below. More info is available, such as CA names/addresses to search for civil action via PM. Again, this isn't idle curiosity. I need to know.

...my board has asked me not to engage further as M. and C. are not employees but renters. The attempt to help to date has cost us more time and money and offset many time sensitive matters needing our attention and staff. My EC has put a stop loss in place....

Sounds like a lien, sorta, eh.

People familiar with ministry and/or social services may recognize this term: FREQUENT FLIERS. I personally know of $6000 in fire relief donations they blew through before landing on this NP.

My brother had rental property in California for many years. This is a typical scam he told me about, in which the bothersome tenants are no doubt waiting to be paid off to leave. That's what happens with houses in town, so why not rural property as well? A thorough credit check and history report is important before they move in. Too late for that now, and once they're in the place, it's really hard to budge them out without the cash leverage.

As one of the thousands of persons who recently experienced total loss from a fire, I may tend to sympathize with the fire survivors/evacuees.....6 months ago the most viscious fire ever destroyed over 15.000 homes, 85 humans and countless other living things, vehicles, over 150,000 acres of land destroyed. If this is the situation those folks went through, no wonder they have been traumatized.   I do not know the terminology you mention, but just wanted to shed some light on how these people might be feeling. there are still many people living in very sub standard living conditions.. there are so many thousands of people who were made homeless by this indcident, some are still living in tents, campers, hotel rooms, FEMA trailers and other make-shift situations....including "couch surfing" We stayed in 8 different places before we landed in a home. If these folks have gone thru a similar situation to what we have experienced, they may not be "scammers" ... i hope it works out for the best for all involved.

I got the impression they were not fire survivors at all, just scammers. Separately, sorry to read, Open Mike.

They are scammers who were also affected by the fire and used it nefariously.

Update--

Our 3 year old neglected granddaughter has, I am both relieved and sad to say, been removed from the chaos now, by children's services, from the unheated RV "home"... just before eviction, so my "gag order" is off now.

Drugs plus criminality make a pretty unhealthy couple, eh.
