Subject: RE: BS: Things we can not say From: punkfolkrocker Date: 25 May 19 - 06:24 PM Bonz - you're allowed to say whay you like as long as you accept the trouble it could get you into in certain circumstances... I.E.. you are most definitely allowed to make a dick of yourself and take the risk of consequences.. Now as for this most recent jest of yours...... Part A: no he is not a jew hater; anyone with the least sense can see he is not. Part B: fair play to the old bloke if he can still get it up... There's many here at mudcat who enviously wish they still could...??? |

Subject: RE: BS: Things we can not say From: DMcG Date: 23 May 19 - 05:29 AM I remember a commentator during a row about the UK Labour adopting the IHRC definition of anti-Semitism saying it was not some shibboleth. Perhaps that was not the ideal situation in which to use the term. |

Subject: RE: BS: Things we can not say From: Donuel Date: 21 May 19 - 08:08 PM Chinese really is a sing song language. A phrase relies on an accurate and repeated pitch for the speaker. Even if a different person uses different but relative pitches it remains steadfast for that person. This may have something to do with Chinese people having twice the percentage of people with perfect pitch compared to westerners. |
Subject: RE: BS: Things we can not say From: Charmion Date: 21 May 19 - 09:54 AM Saul Goldie -- Likewise, a substantial number of English-speakers evidently cannot say the nasal U as it occurs in the French pronoun “tu”, or the German preposition “über”. I have never understood this phenomenon, but I've been told that these people either do not hear the difference in sound at all, or never learn the placement of tongue and lips required to produce it. As for the rest ... Well, the things we cannot say in public, we are rarely unwilling to say only too often within the charmed circle of our friends and relations -- who probably wish we would stop. |
Subject: RE: BS: Things we can not say From: punkfolkrocker Date: 21 May 19 - 09:39 AM If we are doing slightly racist Chinese gags.. there's plenty of chortle mileage to be had from "Election"... |

Subject: RE: BS: Things we can not say From: Donuel Date: 20 May 19 - 11:50 AM Existentially Trump says anything. He never takes responsibility. We do not tell the public about certain predictions. Predictions are not all accurate, but some are. On the bright side we now tell schools to close a day ahead of predicted tornados- that will hit tommorrow |
Subject: RE: BS: Things we can not say From: saulgoldie Date: 20 May 19 - 11:36 AM "Can't" in current common usage does not mean what it means. It most often refers to things we would not do because we do not like the consequences, but that we are *capable* of doing. It's an YUGE issue, because it allows people to rhetorically *escape* responsibility from things that they would *rather not* do, not that they are not *capable of doing* them but *choose* not to. Having said that... For many of European background: The "click" that is common in some African languages. The "chkch" in Hebrew. Some of the consonant combinations in Russian. "ny" "kv" and others. Some of the sounds in Vietnamese. Off the top of my head. I am sure there are more that are not occurring to me, or that I am not even aware of due to my own linguistic background. Anyway... ("Can't" hahaha!) Saul |

Subject: RE: BS: Things we can not say From: Big Al Whittle Date: 20 May 19 - 01:47 AM Existentially - you can say anything. If you're prepared to accept responsibility The trouble is, sometimes you say things and you can't really predict the consequences. You can't control other peoples' interpretation or understanding of what you say. The best thing is to say nowt if you want a quiet life. |

Subject: RE: BS: Things we can not say From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 18 May 19 - 03:19 PM Well, there are things we can't say, and then there are things it would simply be prudent to not say. One can attend a Donald Trump rally, walk up to a large man and say, "Hey, you big ugly sumbitch, take that 'MAGA' cap off and shove it up your ass!" It's probably just not a good idea to do so if one's plans for the future involve living beyond the next thirty seconds. Especially if the big ugly sumbitch in question happens to be Donald Trump himself. |
