I've been looking for a CD or MP3 version of the Ewan MacColl / A.L. Lloyd / Harry H. Corbett album 'The Singing Sailor'. While some of the other things they did have been put on YouTube, and a few songs are available on compilations, I'd really like to have a complete album. Does anyone who has the album have the ability to put it on YouTube so that I could listen to it? I'm not sure what the implications are for copyright on an album that's been unavailable for years and is probably never going to be reissued, but it'd be a great way to get the songs back out there...

Those links above are a treasure trove. It appears that the full recordings are available to listen to online at no charge, or you can buy the whole shebang for £522 GBP.

I have never seen this LP on Ebay in more than 10 years, Steve, and some years ago when I was building up my Topic collection I looked there frequently. Probably just bad luck for me...

If you should happen to see it on Ebay again, could you please nudge me?

I may have confused it with the LP that includes Corbett, Manuel, Killen etc. I wasn't aware of more than one album with Corbett on it.

Although 'The Singing Sailor' itself is not included in that incredible MacColl archive on Bandcamp, I've a feeling that all the tracks from it can be found on the two Wattle LPs that are in the archive, 'Singing Sailors', and 'Shanties and Fo'c'sle Songs' (see links above).

The tracks from 'The Singing Sailor' were recycled endlessly, as detailed on Reinhard's invaluable page about the record:

'The Singing Sailor' on Mainly Norfolk.

The only track I know of with Corbett as chanteyman (and a wonderful job he does!) is "Blow the Man Down" on "Shanties and Fo'c'sle Songs."

Yes Brian, all tracks from 'The Singing Sailor' are on the two Wattle albums. All tracks are also on the two Stinson albums 'Haul on the Bowlin' and 'Off to Sea Once More' but only the second Stinson album is in the MacColl Bandcamp archive.

I'll go further: I think Corbett's "Blow the Man Down" the best single revivalist chantey performance of the 1950s, and possibly ever. Perfect pacing, believable style.

Both those albums are extraordinary. Beware covers and imitations.

(Blow Boys Blow and A Sailor's Garland are nearly as splendid.)

There's an extensive discussion on these albums, mainly by Gibb Sahib, in the 2012 thread Lloyd & MacColl's Sea Song LPs (which isn't yet shown in the list of related threads at the top of the page)
