What happens when you ask the people rather depends on what, if any, legislation exists to ensure adherence to the outcome.
Brexit provides a fine illustration of the "if any" path, leading us straight into the darkside.

The difference between naming a research ship "Boaty Mc Boatface", and electing politicians is that the ship name could be voted for by anyone (possibly more than once) but the outcome was based on a large number voting according to what they'd read on social media, a very one-sided source of views.
