Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: Barbara Date: 30 Jun 19 - 03:31 PM Female lead, maybe two singers. Light and lilting, like maybe Cindy Mangsen, simple guitar behind, I think, and it's new enough that the last line of it is "doing yoga in the nude". Could it be Berrymans' song? Not them singing. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: GUEST,Starship Date: 30 Jun 19 - 04:26 PM Barbara, I have searched for about two hours and got bupkis. I'll continue to look, but don't hold your breath. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: Barbara Date: 30 Jun 19 - 04:59 PM I had the same problem, Starship. I'm gonna wait till it comes around again on Pandora and see if I can grab the info this time. I leave it playing while I'm doing other things so often not at the computer when it shows up. But it's managed to sneak into my head and now I want the rest of the words. Blessings Barbara |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: GUEST,Starship Date: 30 Jun 19 - 05:14 PM Thanks for answering my questions. I learned a great deal about naked yoga, Cindy Mangsen and her other half Steve Gillette (who's a great songwriter/guitarist on his own). His guitar style is a thing of beauty. Love more than a few of his songs. Even if you can grab the writer details, we can find the lyrics that way. Keep yer powder dry. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Jun 19 - 08:56 PM What's the Pandora channel, Barbara? Some channels have short playlists, and if we all listened... I thought it might be on the Mangsen-Gillette "Berrymania" album, but didn't find the song there. Great album, though. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: Barbara Date: 30 Jun 19 - 09:15 PM I've got it set to Thumbprint. Sorry. Combines various things I like to listen to and throws a few more into the pot at random intervals. Has Priscilla Herdman, Mustard's Retreat, Anne Hills, PPM, Paul Simon, Cran, Carl Peterson, Witches of Elswick, Gillette/Mangsen, Dave Mallett. That's mostly what I can think of in the folk family. I eliminated UK folk, no accent, and a number of male singers. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: GUEST,gnomad (ret, hardly looking in these days) Date: 01 Jul 19 - 03:51 AM My old brain keeps on firing Archie Fisher at me. Obviously not the recording you seek, but he just might be the author. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Jul 19 - 05:35 PM Still no cigar on this one? -Joe, still curious- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: Barbara Date: 01 Jul 19 - 06:20 PM Not yet. Couldn't find anything in Archie Fisher's rep, but it's hard to search. Gotta come around again sometime on Pandora, I hope, |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Jul 19 - 06:42 PM "Yoga in the Nude" brings up all sorts of stuff, but not what we'd want... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: Barbara Date: 01 Jul 19 - 07:03 PM Yeah, I found that out too. facepalm. Wish I could remember more of the lyrics. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: Barbara Date: 02 Jul 19 - 12:37 AM Maybe something about "if I remember to unlock the gate" and there's a line in it about something like 'smoking funny tobacco and blow myself away' not sure thats right. bathing twice a year in the spring and fall... and about what the speaker will do without.. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: Barbara Date: 03 Jul 19 - 01:07 AM Bingo! Three solid days of Pandora, and I found it. It's Cockersdale, on Wide Open Skies and it's called Long Long Road. Acapella, and I'll get the words up here as soon as I transcribe them. "smoke that whacky 'bacca they use and blow myself away" and so much fo all our searches, it's "with a beer in my hand doing *tai chi* in the nude" More to follow. Blessings Barbara |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Jul 19 - 01:53 AM Oh, that's why it sounded familiar. It's a great song. I'm guessing "Long Long Road" was written by Keith Marsden, who wrote most of Cockersdale's songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4Odm8U3GAQ |
Subject: Lyr Add: LONG LONG ROAD (Cockersdale) From: Barbara Date: 03 Jul 19 - 02:00 AM Long Long Road Cockersdale (Marsden?) I’m gonna live in a tumbledown shack at the end of a long, long road With a porch at the front and a barn at the back And bees, when I grow old And you better have something well worth sayin’ if ever you come to call For if you’ve got leaflets all about prayin' Well you’re gonna have a damn long haul And I’m gonna fix that tumbledown shack to keep out the wind and rain So I’ll be busy in my barn at the back with the circular saw and plane And if I remember to unlock the gate For you when you arrive You can do something useful while you wait And you better bring a four-wheel drive No TV, Hoover, microwave Or any other useless thing And I’ll decide when I bath and shave In the autumn or the spring And I won’t have a phone and I won’t have a fax Nor a box for the postman’s mail And I’m not gonna pay my council tax Till they threaten that I’m going to jail I’ll stretch and yawn at the break of dawn And rise up feelin’ good And there I’ll stand with a beer in my hand Doing Tai Chi in the nude. And I’m gonna hammer an old [pile ups]* Whenever I go to town And it’s gonna be the rustiest pickup truck that anybody’s seen around I’ll build me a still at the foot of the hill Let the smoke curl up to the sky And there I‘ll sit and drink my fill Distilled from wheat and rye. And I’ll have a stash of bootleg booze To last till my dying day And I’ll smoke that wacky ‘bacca they use And blow myself away (Yeah) I’m gonna live in a tumbledown shack At the end of a long long road And you’ll all be welcome if you don’t come back And if you pay me the money I’m owed So fare you well my little love Fare you well my dear And if ever I return again It’ll be ten thousand years (yeah) don't get that one phrase. (I'm gonna hammer .....) Blessings Barbara |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: GUEST Date: 03 Jul 19 - 09:35 AM Toyota(?) HILUX (a very durable 4x4 type truck), thanks Barbara, I guess it was eating at me, still no explanation of the ArchieF connection though. Maybe my brain's on holiday. Gnomad |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: Barbara Date: 03 Jul 19 - 04:07 PM Think it's meant to sound like it's the US, but paying council tax gives it away. Also sounds like HiLux was traded out for pickup in the US. And postman. I think most of us on this side of the pond say 'mailman' Thanks Gnomad. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: Barbara Date: 15 Jul 19 - 07:38 PM Okay, next question. Where can I find Archie Fisher's version of this? Or at least a single voice version, so I can tell what the melody is. Blessings Barbara |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: Stewie Date: 16 Jul 19 - 11:35 PM Hi Barbara, I have it on a bootleg CD that I got from somewhere long ago: Archie Fisher and John Renbourn 'Live at Kuumbwa Jazz Centre, Santa Cruz, California February 1997'. The song is titled 'Tumbledown Shack'. Archie's intro: "A couple of years ago, I flew over to Boston accidentally – coincidentally rather – with a lad called Iain MacKintosh, a fine banjo player from Scotland. We spent a lot of the flight discussing what we were going to do when we grew up. I was inspired by something Garnet Rogers told me: when he was once travelling in the midwest, he came across this little track leading off into the hills. A sign at the bottom said: ‘Old geezers reservation: Baseball caps will be worn’. So I think we should set up a colony like that for folk singers in the mountains somewhere. In fact, there is one like that outside of Dundee where 3 or 4 musicians live up this litte hill with a track going to the woods. There is a sign at the bottom that says: ‘Salmonella Villa’. So this is what my ideal setup would be for retirement. We should actually be sitting on a porch in rocking chairs with banjos for this, but we’ll do the best with what we’ve got". I found reference to the album on the Net. My copy of the CD has 15 tracks. The one in this link has 11 tracks and the songs are in a different order to my copy. Live in Santa Cruz --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: Barbara Date: 19 Jul 19 - 02:04 PM Thanks Stewie. Do you know anything about the site? I wouldn't mind buying it but am not sure I want my personal info out there, looks like the location may be Russian, and the prices are in Euros. Blessings Barbara |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm gonna live in a tumbledown shack From: Stewie Date: 19 Jul 19 - 07:18 PM Barbara, I know nothing about the site. I found it by googling the album title the other day. I have no recollection of how I came by my copy - possibly from a blog. If you PM me your email address, I can send you an MP3 of the track. --Stewie. |
