Subject: Lyr Add: TI-JOS DÉLLAIRE From: Monique Date: 08 Jul 19 - 11:13 AM From there. (I fixed the spelling of some words).
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ti-Jos Déllaire From: GUEST,Carl in Vermont Date: 14 Jul 19 - 12:41 AM Merci bien Monique. Now it's ironing out the differences between what Bordeleau sings (that's the same you-tube that had caught me)and what's written. Once I get it where I can make it fit the meter and make sense, I studiously ignore all other versions, else what happens to Bordeleau in the sixth verse happens to me. :) If you're the same Monique who found me Tien Tiens Tiens the other year, thanks again for that one too. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ti-Jos Déllaire From: Helen Date: 14 Apr 22 - 02:33 PM Hi Guest, Here is a YouTube link to Gabriel Yacoub singing Mon Pere m'y marie YouTube has other performers as well. Also Lyrics/les paroles - Mon Pere m'y marie |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ti-Jos Déllaire From: Monique Date: 14 Apr 22 - 03:28 PM Live rendition of the lyrics at the link by the Quebec folk band Hommage aux Aînés. |
Subject: RE: Lyr ADD: Ti-Jos Déllaire From: Helen Date: 15 Apr 22 - 03:37 PM Thanks for the link, Monique. I'm not sure which version of the song that Guest is looking for, and whether the lyrics I found answer the request. Guest, Carl in VT, could you tell us who performs the song so that we can find and post a link to the video, please? (Note: I can read French ok but not speak or write it very well. You probably wouldn't want to hear me speak it in my Australian accent, anyway! LOL) |
Subject: RE: Lyr ADD: Ti-Jos Déllaire From: Monique Date: 15 Apr 22 - 04:20 PM Helen, I think the lyrics you found are the ones Guest was looking for as they're the ones sung by Hommage aux Aînés whose strong Quebec accent is sometimes hard for France French to understand -I know what I'm talking about being France French myself. Rendition by the Quebec female band Galant tu perds ton temps -much easier to understand. I also think that Carl in VT was talking about Martin Bordeleau from the Hommage aux Aînés band at the link at the bottom of my first post. |
Subject: RE: Lyr ADD: Ti-Jos Déllaire From: Helen Date: 15 Apr 22 - 04:51 PM Hi Monique. Merci beaucoup, or as we say in Oz, thanks heaps. I guess that means we solved the riddle?? |
Subject: RE: Lyr ADD: Ti-Jos Déllaire From: Monique Date: 15 Apr 22 - 05:32 PM Probably! Rough translation in poor English... MY FATHER MARRIES ME OFF My father marries me off at the age of 15, young people, at the age of 15 He gave me to a 60 year old man On the 1st evening of the wedding, I put my earrings, my velvet hat. And then on the 1st evening, tales and dreams and tales of his parents. On the day after the wedding I go to my father's My father and my mother too will want (???) "Change my husband, please." I said "Endure, endure, daughter, your old man/husband is rich and has much money". "To hell with wealth, I praise my youth and my contentment better I'd prefer/like a 16 to 18 year old man Who would make me happy and my heart much merrier/more satisfied." |
Subject: RE: Lyr ADD: Ti-Jos Déllaire From: Helen Date: 15 Apr 22 - 05:45 PM I just found Gabriel Yacoub's lyrics , which is the video I linked to in my first post. The lyrics are a bit different. |
Subject: RE: Lyr ADD: Ti-Jos Déllaire From: Monique Date: 16 Apr 22 - 02:33 AM Indeed. Here is Yacoub's version with the very same kind of translation (!). I kept the verbs tenses in their original forms. MY FATHER MARRIES ME OFF My father marries me off as soon as 15 years old, He gave me to a 60-year-old man, And I, a young girl (lit. "a young little girl"), how will I spend my time? On the first evening, she didn't do anything but cry. The servant wakes up "Master, are your sleeping? Comfort your spouse who's weeping next to you." "How can I help it when love is missing? Oh queen, my sweet queen, take your fine clothes, Go back to your father's to clear up your troubles." When she was at her father's she started to cry. "Oh father, cruel father to have married me off To this elderly man whom I can't love." "Console yourself, daughter, he's a rich merchant, He's already ill, maybe he'll die of it, You'll be his heir, we'll marry you off again." "To hell with wealth when love is missing! When I am dead and buried, I won't need anything But a little black dress on top of a white bedsheet." |
Subject: RE: Lyr ADD: Ti-Jos Déllaire From: Monique Date: 16 Apr 22 - 02:50 AM I forgot to mention that the plural "jeunes gens" (in the first version of the song) very often means "young men" instead of "young people/youth". |
