Hello, all!

Looking for the origins of the folk song for Who Has Seen the Wind? I've been scouring all of the resources I can find, and I'm still drawing a blank for the origins of the song. Text: English poet Christina Rosetti (1893), and lots of arrangements for solo/choral setting, but specifically looking for the origins of the folk song with this melody:

l l d r m
l l d r m
m m m m r r d d
l l d d l

Any leads? Thank you!

Both of my copies credit New York children's author-educator Alys E. Bentley (1869-1951.) Have not found earlier music or copyright than:

Bentley, Alys E., The Song Primer Made for the Children, (New York: A.S. Barnes, 1907, pp.30-31)

She did a recording session with the RCA Victor Orchestra in 1914 for two 78RPM albums worth of sides called Play Songs. The song title was shortened to The Wind with the matrix data (B-14488) listing her as both composer and arranger but:

...The exact role at the session of Miss Bentley*, a music and dance educator, is unknown."

*Mrs. Bentley nee Ostrander.

At first I thought this was a Mudcat trick question - and was gonna say Dave Goulder wrote "Pigs Can See the Wind" (can't find his version on YT though!) ....... sorry :)

You're not thinking of the version
recorded by Yoko Ono, are you?

Never heard it as a song but have childhood memories of learning it at elocution classes many, many years ago!

Regards

Phil - Thank you so much! I will look into that copy of the song. I appreciate the citation.

Keberoxu - And nope! Not the Yoko Ono one. I did listen to that one while researching this, though. ;)
