I'm coming up to Durham in the first week of September to give a paper at an Arthurian conference. I'll probably do a few songs for the conference attendees so will come with my guitar - are there any folk clubs or other events happening that week within striking distance of Durham where I could do a floor spot? We're staying in central Durham, arriving on the Monday and staying until the Friday before heading south again. All suggestions gratefully received.

like many websites, the above is in many cases (SEVERAL YEARS) out of date.

There is a quarterly magazine covering folk music & sessions & festivals from Harrogate to Berwick
'Folk Roundabout' is much more up-to-date and with many details/info/phone numbers but is only in paper form- cost £1.50 plus p&p- contact

Thank you, Guest, but I'm reluctant to buy a print publication on the off-chance it will contain the information I want. I'll ask on other on-line sites, including Facebook. If I was planning a tour it'd be worth getting paper sources but this is a lot more ephemeral than that!

I genuinely appreciate your reluctance with regard to paper publications, Anne, but in the case of the NE region Folk Roundabout magazine really is the only genuinely reliable source for the kind of listings you need.
The majority of clubs are of the "chances to perform" type rather than "floor spot" as such, but I could personally recommend The Brit at Darlington (on the Tues) and either The Welly (Wolviston) or Durham Folk Club (both on the Thurs).
It really is worth getting a copy of the magazine for future - and continued - reference though, for at £1.50 it is excellent value in this day and age and pretty darned accurate. And yes, the above post is correct in that so many web entries are woefully out of date. Beware...

There is a congestion zone in the centre of Durham.

I was told you could enter after curfew (4pm?) and leave the car during the day and exit after curfew without charge, or even enter before 10am ditto.

Worth knowing in advance.

I live near Durham - The Brit is in Darlington which is south of Durham about 15 miles.
The Copper Beech is also in Darlington and is on a Thurs - not sure what is on at the time u visit but they have a web site "Darlington folk Club"
The Candlelite is on Tues, in Newton Aycliffe
And again not sure about week of your visit but usually an open mic nite. Its about 10 miles from Durham at the Cricket club. There is an "open" facebook page - The Candlelite DL5.
Durham Folk Club is on Thurs at Tap & Spile in Framwellgate Moor about 2 miles from central Durham. Its a Singaround club, like the Brit.

There are loads more clubs but I dont know of any others in Durham itself. Most are more than 5 miles away - but dont quote me on that.

I have used Durham as a base for visits to the Bridge at Newcastle, South Shields, Cramlington and Blaydon folk clubs. It depends on how long you are prepared to have to drive for on the way there and back.
I don't drink and will drive up to an hour.

Thank you all. Tuesday and Thursday recommendations are the most practical, but we won't know until we're there just how much socialising there will be with fellow conference-goers. It is a pity, in 2019, if clubs don't have an up-to-date web presence. If I ever plan a tour, then clearly the paper mag is the way to go to get the right information - on this occasion I wondered whether anyone local to Durham would pick up on the request and be able to inform me, so particular thanks to Jo-Jo. We won't want to do lengthy drives out, partly because we'll have been busy in the day and mostly because it's meant to be a holiday for my husband (who will probably be doing the driving). It may turn out that all we want to do in the evenings is sit and relax!

Some people do, but increasingly fewer of them, and most of them are the wrong side of 50. And so without a web presence the clubs concerned are unlikely to attract a younger audience - or anyone coming from outside the area without pre-existing local knowledge. If all you want is the audience you've already got, that's fine, of course. As this "conversation" is taking place on a website, your comment, Guest, seems a little odd.

Fakebook ain't that difficult. That's where the yoof go!

Only real unwritten rules

1) don't use personal data like birthdates, or your first pet
2) don't use yer own name, use the name of the session/club
3) after that the rules are written if you look hard enough.

That way Fakebook has less of a pointer on you and the miscreants can't triangulate to home in on your house or bank account. Probablity low, but the cost/time loom extremely large when it goes wrong. Let others be less aware.............

the miscreants are constantly surprising us with what they CAN do- as FB is now a major source of information (the ONLY one in some cases) I feel a totally fictitious account is a better answer....regrettable but that's the world in 2019- have a good time in Durham, anyway!
