I'm reading The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*uck. I should have read it years ago (published 2016). It is particularly interesting in the time of COVID when a lot of people have learned some of this stuff on their own (dressing for comfort, not for style, stop with the makeup, not doing as many things like hair color, fancy nails, etc. - basically, don't give a fuck about fashion) and just living in their bodies and their homes comfortably.

It should have been required reading before I retired, when the new dean came in; maybe a lot of us would have figured out how to dismiss her BS without raising blood pressure over her nonsense. :)

Aaaaand...my revolver lost a part at the unloading table and I had to stop, leave the match, and take it to a gunsmith. It was an easy fix, but working with a tiny screw on an outdoor table sitting on gravel isn't good for one's mechanical abilities, especially when one doesn't have the necessary tools. I wasn't charged anything, as it was a small screwdriver & loctite job (possibly a red one, not blue).

I created a very odd toll booth on the Massachuseetts Turnpike. One winter I managed a Mafioso Pizzaria. Sometimes we had left over orders at the end of the night. The most extra pizzas numbered over 30. I would would pass them on to the toll booth attendant who in turn would pass them on to people with kids who seemed hungry.

Nice one, Don! I have a file in my photo directory that is large images I let rotate on my screen saver (before the computer goes to sleep). I've added that one to it. NASA has lovely large images that lend themselves well to the desktop image (I have a black background and the photo that appears on both monitor screens is the rover track on Mars taken several years ago.)

On the featured image, the most prominent glow of the California Nebula is the red light characteristic of hydrogen atoms recombining with long lost electrons, stripped away (ionized) by energetic starlight. As simple as a magnet, the Higgs shield flows from south pole to north allowing mass to travel at the speed of light. Our current attempts only work on mass ass big as several million atoms at a time but still visible to the human eye a couple microns accross. To scale up as large as a space craft a launch from empty space or a moon without an atmosphere would be necesssary.
However what makes it anomolous is that over a 8 light year trip to a nearby star we could navigationally be off by almost a month.

Ironicly this MOAB annex is in the civil war years.
For years the Idaho potato farmers quietly dug transgender potatos for Americans to eat but 5th Ave has essentially outed the transgender potato and is radicalizing the Idaho Potato farmer. I am using novelty in a way that is not entertainmnt. We can entertain ourselves to death but novelty is a much bigger paradigm shaking event and thinking process. I have seen glimpses of novelty in MOAB over the years while it is mostly absent in the rest of threads.


Yet, this pre-occupation with ‘game’ rules (for this is what evolutionary psychology comes down to) is manifestation of a curious and unacknowledged one-sidedness. Physics, as we all know, is a search for fundamental laws, laws that apply across the board, laws that are intrinsic to the nature of the universe itself. Why do we assume that there are no such equivalent laws to be found in psychology? As we have just said, contemporary psychology thinks only in terms of extrinsic laws, i.e. rules that are arbitrarily imposed. One reason that immediately comes to mind is that we do not see mind / consciousness as being fundamental in the same way that we see matter as being. We are, as professor of physics Amit Goswami (1993) says, confirmed material realists – we believe that only matter is real. BULLSHIT without the Higgs there is no matter/masss. This, of course, is a pretty big assumption on our part, although the fact of the matter is that we are now so caught up in this assumption that we don’t actually see it as such; the truth of the matter (pun intended) is that we have chosen to go down this road a long time ago, and we certainly aren’t showing any signs of wanting to question that choice now. Our predisposition to see the universe we live in this way leads to some rather peculiar, if not down-right contradictory conclusions, however. The inevitable conclusion of material realism is that the only meaning to be found in life is that meaning which is conditioned by natural selection, i.e. we only find stuff meaningful because it suits the game of ‘survival of the fittest’ that we do. Philosophically, this is the same as saying that, in the final analysis, everything is meaningless, which is in keeping with the important Western tradition of philosophical pessimism. The problem with this conclusion has been pointed out quite often, however: if everything is meaningless, then so too is our assertion that ‘everything is meaningless’ meaningless; it is a null-statement. We think that when we make this statement we are saying something meaningful, but if that meaningfulness is ‘meaningful’ only because of the way in which the arbitrary rules of natural selection have caused our brains to be designed, then it is not meaningful at all, in any real sense of the word. If such is the case, then it is inescapable that anything we say must be tautological, i.e. incapable of referring to anything outside itself. This notion of ‘tautological meaning’ is, as we shall shortly see, central to our understanding of psychological entropy.

Jung, writing in the first half of the twentieth century, had no recourse to non-equilibrium thermodynamics, and had to apply classical thermodynamic theory to the dynamic, self-organizing system of the psyche, which it is not able to model. He did the best he could, Capra argues, with the limited understanding that was available.
We have seen how science shapes socicietal in good nd bad ways. In the 20th century 'survival of the fittest' caused much fascist harm. Now the Higgs can do some unifying good in society.
We should move beyong Jung since science has moved beyond where we were.
Abraham Maslow’s assertion that neurosis is, at root, the rejection of novelty, i.e. the unknown. This would mean that ‘laziness’ (in Scott Peck’s particular usage of the word) corresponds to neurosis, or ‘sticking to the known,’ which is an idea that we will discuss in more detail as we go along. Within the mainstream of contemporary psychological thinking, however, there is no place for concepts such as mental entropy (it is quite out of fashion) and as a result we are in the curious position of trying to describe mental functioning without admitting the existence of any law of energetics. Rather than looking into the possibility that the psychic domain may be subject to universal laws in the same way that the physical domain is subject to, say, the law of gravitation, it seems that we want to see everything that goes on in the mind as being due to conditioned laws only. Conditioned laws are rules that are arbitrarily set up, much like the law that prohibits driving a car when under the influence of alcohol; they include behavioural drives on the one hand, such as hunger, sex and aggression, and the adaptive pressure to problem-solve on the other hand, which is to say, the pressure to learn efficient ways of interacting with our environment so that we can survive and reproduce as successfully as possible within it. Both biological drives and ‘environmental selection on the basis of reproductive performance’ come down to evolution in the end of course, and it is evolutionary psychology that makes the major claim on our attention at the present moment. That this is generally considered to be ‘the way to go’ is clearly demonstrated by our interest in such endeavours as the Human Genome Project, and the popularity of academics such as Daniel Dennett and Steven Pinker, who have (separately) articulated the principles of evolutionary psychology in a number of high profile books.
The lpss of novelty in humans is an entropy that has serious aspects of pschological Entropy as it is for overlords.

Nature has an imagination greater than its secondary life forms. To Nature life is but a thin film that requires special circumstances in certain regions. We share special inadequacies with the galactic overlords which merely have an extra billion years in their evolutionary bag of tricks that originated in a more temperate Red Star system than ours. The inadequacies the overlords are now experiencing is a bit like what we see in a polarized America. Overlord Rogues who couldn't care less about the prime directive and who have lost the techniques of planetary engineering are now in charge. A life spreading ideology is being replaced by an unsympathetic ambivilance and a future without empathy. Most say it a cost thing but the rot goes deeper. This solar system had the hand of the overlords involved in seeding life on Mars, Earth and Venus. As you know life gardening needs a stabilizing moon that only suceeded once on Earth but destroyed Mars and Venus as prospects for bio engineering. The failures arose by causing a collision with the planets with misguided moons. The moons are needed because the planets would tumble and have no reliable seasons with everchanging polar regions without a moon.. Admitedly guiding huge astroids into stable orbits are tricky things to do but now the overlords don't even try. These kids of the original overlords have had it tough and have gone through a period of cruelty much the same as a trump adminisration on Earth.

I just thought I'd warn a priviledged few to not expect any extraordinary help from the overlords anymore. Only Nature has an imagination vast enough over unimaginable time to save, not mankind, but life itself.
