Now that Betelgeuse looks like it's going to go nova or even supernova it makes me wonder if it's the work of the Galactic You-Know-Who. (Is there a Galactic Overlady? Or do women just naturally rule the Overlords?)

The real reason Betelgeuse is going to blow up is because the Galactic Overlord has never liked the star's name. A zillion times bigger than our Sun and the best name we humans can come up with is Betelgeuse? It's hard to spell and sounds like a joke. And what does it even mean?

The GO has decided to get rid of Betelgeuse and replace it with something else, in hopes we'll give the new thing a more dignified name.

I suppose that the inhabitants around Betelgeuse (there are FOUR E's in that name!) could simply be reducing their energy usage and the GO isn't involved at all. Of course, he does own the power utilities out that way and lack of income could annoy him.

BWL, it is said there are 3 TRUTHS we deal with in our universe; personal truth, political truth and objective truth.

Personally if Betelguse blew up today we will never see it in our lifetime as its light and gravity waves make their journey of 430 light years to Earth.

Politically the 'make Betelgeuse great again' movement has been good for their antisemetism attacks, mass shootings, nazis, zenophobic internment camps for immigrant children and waves of enourmous hate that is on the verge of exploding.

Objectively Betelgeuse could go on like this for another million years before its mega nova.

It may be as far as 650+ light years away depending upon galactic variations, orbits, time and dark energy, but who is counting.
If you were lucky when it exploded in the distant past, you would be able to see it in the daytime sky. Gamma ray damage would be 'light'.

I am off to Missoula and then to Spokane around first light tomorrow. The forecast changed from pleine du neige to plus de plui. If your French or mine is rusty and squeaky, lots of snow was changed to lots of rain (maybe). Anyway, the temperatures changed from low 30s F to 40s F. Since we are going by car I'm taking my laptop and will let y'all know if I'm still alive. Back home Sunday sometime.

I've discovered a foolproof way for you and your friends to get away with doing unscrupulous things without getting caught! Just make sure you NEVER refer to the deliberative process leading up to the actual nefarious deed(s) as "hatching a plot". When plots are hatched, the events which ensue are automatically doomed to failure. Just call the planning process "doing the laundry" or something, and everything will go perfectly.

Also, make sure you don't claim afterwards that everything "went off without a hitch". That's a sure-fire way to guarantee that some moron left their wallet at the scene of the crime.

The good news today is that I found a file I saved back in 2015, with links to all of the poems posted in MOM¹ that Amos wanted hidden so he could publish them in a book. Or I may have taken them out of the posts, I can't remember. It's possible to open individual posts if the results show up in a search, but I can't paste the link directly into the search bar and get anything but code "500 Internal Server Error." I have to figure out if I can search on the message number.

The bummer today is that I was at the grocery store self-checkout with stuff from my shopping list and I accidentally left my milk carton behind (I didn't scan it so I didn't pay for it, it's down on that little shelf beside the register). Now what else did I set on that shelf? And I seem to have lost that shopping list.

Most of the poems that were hidden (several dozen) in the Mudcat Poetry Corner thread have been restored. I think Amos' plans to publish that poetry were cut short by life and the move, and then his death. There are a few more to track down at some point in the future, but this is the lion's share, as far as I can tell.

I can prove the planet is warming; I have to mow my lawn today. It's January in Texas and only in the last couple of years have I had to mow the lawn during the winter months. Gluon and her duck-dog friends haven't been by for a while or they could have grazed it down. At the same time they need to eat the large snails and slugs that are appearing out there. I haven't seen this size in all of the years I've lived here (38 of them so far - OMG who knew I'd ever move to Texas, let alone live here for such a long time).

ETs eating Alaskan homesteaders is not cannibalism.

We resolved that issue way back in the early days of the MOAB when freds (an ET species) attempted to eat khandu. Freds eating humans (and khandu is purported to be human) is not cannibalism. Freds eating freds is cannibalism. Humans eating freds is not cannibalism, though why anyone would want to eat freds, who reportedly taste like aluminum foil, is a mystery.

But I suppose anything is edible with enough Tapatio sauce on it.
