I've hanged my last victim. Hanged him in Malad, Idaho. I also blew up former Governor Frank Steuenenberg. I'm all set for my class on Monday, assuming I can edit the number of slides down to a manageable size -- there's currently 76, which is too many for a 90 minute program.

MOM is back from the deep freeze, and the main thing she complained bitterly about was the cold toilet seat. I told her if she'd stop drinking all of that beer she wouldn't have to go so often, but she persisted.

The Higgs boson is the quantum manifestation of the Higgs field, which gives mass to elementary particles it interacts with, via the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism. By measuring the rate at which the Higgs boson decays into different particles, physicists can infer the strength of their interaction with the Higgs field!: the higher the rate of decay into a given particle, the stronger its interaction with the field. So far, the ATLAS and CMS experiments have observed the Higgs boson decays into different types of bosons such as W and Z, and heavier fermions such as tau leptons. The interaction with the heaviest quarks, the top and bottom, was measured in 2018. Muons are much lighter in comparison and their interaction with the Higgs field is weaker. Interactions between the Higgs boson and muons had, therefore, not previously been seen at the LHC at Cern. There is symmetry theory speculation that as many as 8 different types of bosons exist which to my way of thinking may include bosons that give dark matter gravitational mass and is composed of 'technicolor' fundamental particles. Technicolor models do not generically predict Higgs-like bosons as light as 125 GeV/c2; such a particle was discovered by experiments at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012 and 2014. If gravity is an emergent force from other interactions and is not a fundamental force it makes the role that bosons play even more mysterious/complex for me. I'm hoping it gets simpler but it shows how we haven't solved the really big questions    yet.
It is as though we have found jigsaw puzzle pieces that form most of the border of a picture but not the picture itself.

Maybe the God particle gave Amos comfort. The decay of a Higgs boson is only proof nothing lasts forever, except maybe entropy.

In 2012, scientists at CERN's Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland won a Nobel Prize in Physics with a breakthrough finding: they detected the Higgs boson, a subatomic particle predicted by the Standard Model of physics nearly 50 years prior. The Higgs boson doesn't live very long, quickly decaying into smaller particles like two photons (light particles).

Now, researchers using ATLAS and CMS have found evidence for a rare Higgs boson decay in which the subatomic particle decays into one photon and two leptons, a type of elementary particle that can be charged or neutral. (Electrons and muons, a similar type of subatomic particle, are two examples of charged leptons.) Specifically, they found evidence that the Higgs boson can decay into either a photon and a pair of electrons, or a photon and a pair of muons with opposite charge.

They need one new all-in-one (because of space problems and the person hates laptops). That person is a nun, so if she hates something I assume she means it. They also need a new copy/scan/fax/etc. printer as the current one is trashed from use. The computer, by the way, is running Windows 8.1 from 2013 and I couldn't upgrade it to Win10. The other computer is fine, running Win10 1952.

I've recommended this one for the nun.

In science fiction, the diet of extraterrestrials is an interesting mix of energy absorbtion. Usually it is simply just us but there are the proposed symbiotic relationships with bacteria that has radiation as the primary energy source. However from an engineering point of veiw the actual needs and transfer of energy should be'question one' to be answered.
So do they eat and if so what? radiation, Strawberry ice cream, animal mutillations, twinkys, chemical reactions or atomic? I wonder what a real alien schmeer would look like.

Avi Loeb astrphysicist and a former big wheel at Harvard has a thought process I admire. He noticed that Umauma accelerated away from the sun in excess of a light sail. Its speed from outside the solar system suggests that it is much like a stationary buoy in the galaxy and the solar system moved past it in its corkscrew orbit around our galaxy. He also noticed it was flat and not cigar shaped as first assumed.
It is our own Navy that has has incontravertibl evidence of intelligently controled craft beyond human capability.
