US Army gas masks used to be equipped so that the person wearing it could safely drink from a canteen. I didn't have that option, but we were tough then and would rather breathe nerve gas than die of thirst (30 seconds versus several days). It was a special canteen cap that had a straw-system so you could suck up water from inside your mask and, I assume, drink it rather than drown.

Somebody's gonna have to 'splain this one to me....

I called the Social Security Administration the other day to report my wife's passing as required by law. Now, when a spouse dies, the widow or widower is entitled to a one-time death benefit of something like $250.

It seems to me that everyone reporting the death of a spouse who is a Social Security beneficiary is also going to want to apply for the death benefit. So, one would think that since the two are so closely associated, one should be able to do both things with one phone call, right? Wrong! I had to make an appointment for someone to call me back a week later to take my application for the death benefit over the phone. If it wasn't such an overused phrase, I'd say, "Go figger!"

A double layer of cotton quilting fabric handles a lot of The Bad Stuff. Put some high-grade furnace filter stuff between them, if you have it (use new stuff, not used filter stuff).

I went out today for the first time in 9 days. I wore my mask and stuff like a good citizen and I left my shootin' iron at home 'cause I didn't see no need fer it just then.

No ordering masks, I've pulled out a bunch of my stash and am deciding what layers need to go together, and trying a couple of different designs. For all of those people who sew or quilt or do various fabric arts, suddenly our stashes are pure gold. Until now we laughed about the excess. No more.

MOM wants a flannel mask but since it's a plaid print she's being fussy and insisting that the pattern be aligned down the center seam. She'll relax a little once I make the curbside pickup of adult beverages from the local Total Wine and More store. I'm planning to redistribute a bottle to a friend who hasn't been able to visit his favorite bar for weeks now, but there's a bottle for the house also.

An old plastic bag (the older the better -- RECYCLE! REUSE!) is excellent protection. So is a good old-fashioned gas mask or any of several variants of PPE such as these ambulance workers demonstrate.

Three days away from a full 14 days of not going into any other buildings like the grocery store or the Legion Hovel. I did deliver my water bill to a drop-off slot (didn't touch it with my hand) and to the gas station for 2 gallons of mower gas (used a glove on the pump and washed my credit card when I got home.)

The worst part of being about 95% over the total knee replacement surgery is that I'm all fixed up but there's no place to go.

For you guys who might not sew (I know several who do, so I won't assume anything here): yet another approach to making facemasks, this time out of short tube socks.

I am so angry! When I built the cabinets in my kitchen over twenty years ago, I made the drawers just a bit over ten inches wide because that was the width of a wicker cutlery tray we had. Who knows where it came from. It was just there. I assumed the tray was of a standard size and that we'd be able to get a replacement when needed. Over the years, being wicker and in regular use, the tray started to get raggedy and my wife began to hound me about replacing it. That's when I found that it was definitely NOT a standard size. I must have tried to find a replacement for ten years or more. Today, I accomplished the goal! I found a cutlery tray exactly 10.04 inches wide. It fits in the drawer like they were custom made for each other!

So, to recap, after many years of trying to please my wife by replacing our ratty cutlery tray, I finally find one that's perfect. And my wife's no longer around to be pleased. Fuck!

Maryland Route 5 (Leonardtown Road), which joins US 301 in Brandywine to the north and splits at the county line to bypass Waldorf on Mattawoman-Beantown Road...The sewage treatment plant is of course in former Beantown.

'Ghost' towns around here are either gentrified or left to highly populated decrepitude based mostly on race.

As for Mattawoman, it has a story lost in the fog of history along with Parnasus NJ.

We're not going out much (of course) but we are eating well. It is, however, beginning to look like the neighborhood is running out of pets.

If you were wondering, the Legion Hovel has been declared "Extra Special Essential" by all levels of government. It has a Super Duper Essential Priority 1-AAAA for everything it wants or needs. The last time it ran short of beer the riots destroyed most of the cities of Boise, Meridian, Twin Falls, Heck, Idaho Falls, Hamer, Couer d'Alene, Bliss, and Dingle. Inkom was slightly damaged as well.

Either way, self-care is the Rx. Get takeout from another place that serves so you have something to eat in the house - that you can pop in the microwave. That loss and misery diet is brutal; I was on it one time and ended up 50 pounds less than I am now (which is about 30 pounds over normal).

These days I have at least one really easy meal ready to go each day. I just set up a small crockpot with steel cut oats, raisins, a dash of salt, and a quart of boiling water, and I'll have about 3 days of breakfasts (it reheats well.) Even if it means keeping a tub of cottage cheese in the fridge and a case of honeybuns in the freezer, give yourself something really easy for a meal.

I have lentil soup in my fridge right now. If you drive to Idaho, travel via Texas and you can sit in the driveway and I'll put a bowl of hot soup on the porch (using gloves and a mask) and then you're on your way. You'll be in a better frame of mind for Idaho (and Rap has a huge honker house - you could stay in his basement or somewhere and they'd hardly know you were around. Just watch it in case the shower head is still hot-wired.)

I had Aldi deliver some items that I didn't get on my last run and it isn't worth it to go out for "luxuries." Chocolate, beer, snacks. It was an expensive delivery, but I did my part supporting the gig economy. MOM would be proud, one of those items was some Shiner Bock beer; I haven't had any alcohol for a couple of months because of the surgery and medications involved.
