Save for Camp Harmony. More Soon.

Dates of camp are Friday, December 27, 2019 - Wednesday, January 1, 2020. Early bird camp registration begins September 1 at http://sffmc.org/

Camp Harmony returns to Walker Creek Ranch for our New Year’s camp from Friday, December 27 to Wednesday, January 1.

Attendees may come for all or part. We welcome newcomers, and if you will be a first-time attendee, please feel free to email or phone with your questions.

The Venue: Walker Creek Ranch, in rural Marin County, is known to some in our community as a great retreat spot for other musical gatherings. Its level site, nestled into surrounding hills, features accessible buildings clustered for convenience.
Facilities include a central dining hall and other spacious halls suitable for dancing, concerts, and large group activities. There are numerous rooms for workshops, Arts & Crafts, and lots of smaller spaces for jamming. The property offers walking trails and a scenic bridge over the creek. There’s even a natural history museum for learning about local flora and fauna.

Housing:  Walker Creek offers a range of housing options, and our fees are rated accordingly. This location is remote from any off-site lodging. The online registration form will provide space to explain any accessibility needs. All campers will need to bring their own bedding and towels.
• Dormitories are furnished with bunk beds, and all have easy access to a large central bath house with separate facilities for men and for women. We hope to be able to provide a lower bunk to everyone who wants one.
• Semi-Private lodges have multiple rooms each accommodating - people. These buildings have a common lounge area, some with kitchenee, and shared internal bathrooms. There are no single rooms available at Walker Creek Ranch. To help keep prices as low as possible, no linens are being provided this year.
• Camping is permitted. A parking lot is designated for RVs (power for some but no hook-ups) and tent camping is available at locations around the grounds. If you live locally and wish to stay off-site, the charge will be the same as camping.
Our registrars will make every effort to situate campers in housing suitable to their needs and preferences.

Meals:  Each camper day starts and ends at 2pm, and includes dinner on the day you arrive, and breakfast and lunch the next day. All meals will be prepared by Walker Creek staff who will do their very best to accommodate individual dietary preferences. When you register you have the option of choosing gluten-free, dairy-free, omnivore, vegetarian, or vegan. If you have additional dietary needs, please contact our registrars.

Online Registration: Registration will be available starting September 1, and prices will be posted on the website. To register, go to www.sffmc.org and click on the Harmony registration link. The site will guide you through registration, and will send you an email confirmation when your information has been received. Margaret Miles and Katie Riemer are co-registrars; if you encounter any difficulties or need help registering, please email campnewharmony@gmail.com, or phone (510) 684-1454 (before 9pm ) with your questions. (Note: we are both volunteers, and it may take us up to  hours to respond. Please either call OR email, but don’t do both!)
PLEASE NOTE: We need to provide Walker Creek with attendance numbers earlier than we have in past years. ALL REGISTRATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY NOVEMBER . THERE WILL BE NO LATE REGISTRATION!
You can pay online using a credit card, debit card, PayPal account, or by check. If you choose to pay by check, the site and your confirmation email will tell you where to mail your check.

Camperships
For those who would not otherwise be able to attend camp, the Club offers fee reductions known as “camperships.” If you are able to donate to the Campership Fund, remember it is tax-deductible, and you will be helping someone get to camp who may be someone you will miss if they can’t attend. The funds will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis on the honor system. We encourage you to register early if asking for a campership. Instructions for applying for camperships will be included in online registration. TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS to the Campership Fund are welcome and appreciated!

Activities
Harmony is a self-made music camp for our Club members of all ages and experience levels. Workshops include singing, dancing, tunes, instrument instruction/technique, and there is a great deal of spontaneous jamming that occurs day and night. All workshops and activities are camper-led, and any camper can sign up to teach or lead a workshop.
In addition, every night we have a concert and a dance. If you would like to lead a workshop, you can sign up at camp, or go to Mudcat café (
https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=166545) and sign up online. To see what workshops have been offered in previous years, search Mudcat café for “Camp Harmony workshop signups.”

Look for more information in the Nov/Dec folknik, and visit us on Facebook!

For photos & more information about camp, please visit www. sffmc.org. We hope to see you there.

If by chance you can't access the schedules at Mudcat, they will also be available at http://joe-offer.com/

This thread is now open for signups for leading workshops. Please give your name, the preferred day and time and location of the workshop, and the name of the workshop.
The day of the "triple crown" and SFFMC General Meeting haven't been decided. I won't post the schedule grids and start organizing until sometime after that - probably sometime in Mid-November.

Hi Joe, Please schedule for a morning at 11am. Thanks!
Carol
Hi Joe,
Please schedule the Faith Petric song workshop for either Monday or Tuesday in the morning, preferably at 10am or 11am. We've had to change our plans, and Dick and I will not get to camp until Sunday before lunch.

Thanks for taking care of all this!

Hello, Joe. I would like to lead two workshops at Camp Harmony. One would be FUNNY SONGS and the other TRAD SONGS WITH SHEEP IN THEM. I might ask for a third workshop.

Please do not schedule me in that noisy room next door to the loud instrumental jam. Or first thing in the morning, OR at the same time as the most attended favorite workshops. Thanks a bushel and a peck,
love, Sadie

Funny Songs: Museum, Saturday, 1:30 PM

It would be nice to have jams 24/7 in the fireplace room in the shower house. Would that work for the Andronico's and Irish jam to be the foundation of that during the day? both of your sessions are wonderful, and we would like for people to be able to hear or join them as they pass through.

I would like to teach a handful of Blowzabella tunes for all instruments. Contemporary Anglo-Euro dance tunes (waltzes, mazurkas, schottishes, etc.) written by past and present members of Blowzabella.

I'm a brand new member and this will be my first camp. So I'm not sure of the logistics. But I'd be happy with a slot in mid-morning or early afternoon for the full days.

I would bring copies of the tunes to share.

Hi, David - let's try Bay Room, Monday and Tuesday, 11-noon, and see how it goes. (I had it on Sat/Sun, but somebody asked me to change it so they could attend) -Joe Offer-

Subject: workshop: SF Camp Harmony 2019-2020
From: diplocase
Date: 01 Oct 19 - 06:48 PM

Joe - It looks like Arlene Immerman will be doing a workshop on variants of the Gypsy Laddie/Raggle-taggle Gypsies/Blackjack Davy family of ballads. Please disregard my earlier request to do a workshop on variants of the Twa Sisters family of ballads (one such workshop is wonderful; two are excessive!) Instead I'd like to do a workshop on less-common Wassail songs, including orchard-wassailing songs, wren-boy songs, and songs of other house-visiting traditions. Any quiet room that accommodates twenty people will be great. Afternoon is best, any day. Casey

Sounds wonderful! How about on Saturday, Museum, 11-noon? -Joe-

update: The Lesser-Known Wassails workshop at Harmony Camp is now confirmed for Sunday at 11am in the Museum.

For the purpose of this workshop, I’m looking for songs traditionally used anywhere in the world for ritualized visits to neighbors’ houses for the purpose of soliciting food, drink, and money, in return for calling down luck or blessings upon the house and its occupants, livestock, orchards etc. This definition includes British Isles/Irish traditions like the Wren Boys, Pace-Egging, and Souling as well as wassails usually sung during the period from Christmas to Twelfth Night. (We’ll save the specifically New Year songs for Ed’s workshop on that subject!) It also includes such traditional songs as Russian Kolyadki and Mexican Posadas. I’m hoping we will push beyond the familiar “Wassail Song” and “Gloucestershire Wassail” to less-well-traveled paths!

Looking forward to hearing all sorts of interesting songs. I hope you can be there! Casey

Hi Joe,

Paul Kostka and I will be happy to co-lead the Irish Sessions again.
We were fine with the room we ended up with last year.
(Maybe we can put a sign on the door saying when the Irish Sessions are, so people who want to socialize in there can do it some other time?).

         Thanks so much!         Shoshanna

Don't conflict with Irish Set Dance.

Tentatively set for the Fireplace Room, Daily, 1:30-3:45. -Joe-

I would like to lead the Parody workshop again this year. Afternoons seem to work well, maybe Sunday if that doesn't conflict with the Triple Crown. It seems that this workshop has been so popular that we've needed two hours to get around to everyone. I don't remember the names of the workshop spaces but I think the pone called the museum would work well for this. It's the place where the acapella singers met after dinner. Thanks for doing this Joe. (2 hours)

How 'bout Tuesday, Museum, 4:00-5:30 PM? Not quite 2 hours, but you can go until dinner starts at 6.

Hi Joe:

I'd like to lead two 1-hour workshops.

3-chord song singalong

and

Songs of heartbreak and betrayal.

Between lunch and dinner. I'll be there all five days.

Could you please post a list of the workshop spaces?

Thanks

Marlene

Marlene, I completely missed your request, and I should be punished. So, I'm glad you sent me a reminder.

Hi, Marlene -
I hope we can finalize a list of workshop spaces at the Camp Committee meeting this Wednesday, November 6. The spaces should be more-or-less that same as what was on Last Year's Schedule. We're going to try to keep most singing in the building with the science museum - I think that building has 3 to 4 good rooms for singing. And the bathhouse will be mostly instrumental sessions. We found the instrumental sessions bled sound into the singing sessions.

I’m planning to host a ballad sing around workshop at camp, time and place tbd. The ballad is The Gypsy Laddie, Child 200. Also called Gypsy Davy or Black Jack Davy. If you know a version, bring it along. There’s still time to learn one before camp.

Dear Joe, did I already send you any workshop requests for this year's camp? I cannot remember. Here are my possible and heartfelt workshop wishes (and in a room where we can hear ourselves sing!):

1. Thyme for the Silver Dagger!: Songs of Love and Heartbreak (two hours?)

2. Ballad Family Values: Tradition, Jealousy, Conflict, Power---Old-fashioned Family ballads! (Joe, Please make this one two hours! Many thanks!)

These are good topics as well, if I cannot have one of the first two (Or, perhaps, someone else will lead them):
Funny Songs!
Animal Songs!

And, my dear Joe, if you can refrain from scheduling any ballad workshops across from each other, we will be so grateful! Ballad singers need all the time together, workshops, and sessions we can get!

You are a god. Please let me know.
Sadie

Thank you for deifying me, but I can schedule you for only two workshops before camp. You can probably fit these in when you're at camp. Just use the yellow stickies.

Would it be appropriate for me to do a solo set? I'd like to do my set on "The Sexual Practices of the Irish: from Queen Maeve to Gay Marriage." It would take 45 minutes or so and I wouldn't need a very big room, I'm thinking. If you could find a time that is not opposite a ballad session, that would be great.
Cheers,
David

Can't put a title that long in the little box, but I put "Sexual Practices of Irish" at 11-12, Saturday, Muir/Carson

Hi, David -
I'm "leasing" Muir/Carson as one site. Take your pick, and the empty room is open only for quiet activities. Muir is big - too big for many activities. Carson is cosy, perhaps the cosiest of all our gathering rooms. If you're signed up for the Muir/Carson slot, you get your pick.

Madrone is another that's open only for quiet stuff, and it's not being booked - Bay is identical, and the women asked me not to schedule Madrone to allow better access to the women's restroom.
That's one of those "difficult" questions....

The Ceilidh is dead, long live The House Party.

Using an Irish word for it's name led many people to think i twas a Celtic event and there was no place for them if they didn't practice a Celtic art.

Indeed I was inspired by a Celtic ceilidh i witnessed in Aberdeen, so i kept the word ceilidh. But the word "ceillidh" means "together." My dream was an event that would draw the whole camp together under one roof: Celtoids, Swing kats, Dancers of every stripe,Old-timers, Songsmiths, Protesters, Nueve Cancion canters, Storytellers, Bluesers, CountryWetern singers, Francophones, Yiddophiles, the gamut of things that make up Camp Harmony. But many thought is just celtic stuff. Ironically a word that means together kept us a part.

So -- The House Party

A few words for those who haven't attended before. The House Party is an attempt to replicate an old fashioned party where neighbors gather and entertain each other with their own "party peices." One person tells a story, another sings a country song, someone has a good joke, a fiddler plays a lively tune, the rug is rolled up and dancing breaks out, a ballad singer holds forth, a banjo player breaks down, a blueser wails and moans till we all feel better, drinking songs are belted out, rounds go around, someone sings a new song she's written, yo-yo tricks are displayed, Yoyo Ma is impersonated, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

The event is unplanned. The "man of the house" (that being me, but one of these times maybe someone would like to step in) calls on his talented guests following the flow of the moment. It's all improv. If there were a plan it just would be another talent show. I welcome people to tell me they want to be called so i know who's willing and able, I may approach you during the day before and ask if you would to be called. But there are no promises made in either case, the spontaneity is what makes it .....

The House Party

Hi Joe
I've been trying to get on mudcat for a few days, then dug out your msg saying it was down.
Anyway, here's the evening dance schedule. Organizing things has been hard this time, and the swing dance format is still up in the air. First dance will probably be at 8, second at 10, but that is subject to change at camp.
thnks

Hi Joe,

Happy Holidays (all of them), and thanks for keeping us apprised of the workshop sign-up process. I would like to give a workshop on "Native American Flute Playing" on Saturday at 2:45 in the Kitchen, and to host a "Fretted Dulcimer Jam/Playaround," also at 2:45, but on Tuesday--in the Kitchen or Bay.

Since I missed last year, I don't have a feeling for the various rooms, but I assume that "No Jams" means that instrumental music or methods classes should be elsewhere? I suggested Bay as an alternative location for the dulcimer jam because it's different from the Kitchen--also Kitchen looks like it is the only under-used space, but I presume that cooking and food-prep occurs elsewhere?

Anyway, if you don't have time to fit these in, or have doubts about these, I'll check at camp, and use yellow stickies when appropriate! There does seem to be a dearth of instrumental workshops this year--I wanted to attend a uke w/s, but don't see one posted. I'm bringing along two, just in case.

Kathryn

Hi, Kathryn - I put both in the Kitchen. I think it will work best for you. But you can change when you get to camp.

We're very excited to welcome you! Please read these important reminders:
  • On the first day you are registered, arrive AFTER 2:00 pm.
  • Every camper needs to bring their own linens and towels! Walker Creek is not providing them this year. Your housing assignment email also has many helpful hints about what to bring, and answers a lot of questions. And speaking of what you bring...
  • Every year at Camp Harmony, our clean-up crew brings home a phenomenal quantity of left-behind objects. Be mindful while you are at camp, and check before you leave that you have all your belongings.
Please read the below information on etiquette at Camp, even if you have attended in the past:

Etiquette at Camp Harmony (and other SFFMC Events) Thank you for registering for Camp Harmony! You may be an old hand at San Francisco Folk Music Club camps, or you this might be your first time coming to the New Year's Camp. Either way, we'd like to remind you of some of the ways we all get along together. These basic rules of etiquette are some general guidelines to make sure that everyone has the best experience of camp possible.

Workshops

  • Workshops are focused on a single subject, and generally have a facilitator who would like to present or share some material. Often, but not always, there is an intention for other participants to share what they have as well.
  • Workshop leaders should arrive on time and let the other participants know what is expected of them.
  • Workshop leaders should also be aware of the time and end on time so the next workshop can start on time.
  • Workshop leaders have final say in the format of their workshop. It's their show, please let them host it the way they wish. If there is general sharing of material, they may choose to go around the room in a circle, where everyone gets a turn (time permitting), or they may choose to go popcorn-style, where people go in a more organic order.
  • Participants may pass when it comes to their turn; it is also common for them to make a request for a song or other piece that they would like to hear but don't know (or aren't confident about). This is fine, with the understanding that not every request needs to be fulfilled.
  • Singing along with the choruses is generally encouraged; a person leading a song should indicate and possibly rehearse the chorus if its not a well-known song. That said, bear in mind that a person may be singing a different version of the song than you know, so listen carefully the first time through just to be sure. Even if they get the song wrong, that's how the folk music process works, so bear with it and if you have questions about a version, ask after the song or after the workshop is over.
  • If someone stumbles over the words, ask before helping. They may need their memory jogged in a different way or be working on a different version.
  • If you're stumbling over the words, ask for help. There's no shame in a mental lapse.
  • Let the song leader be the song leader. Don't take over a song that someone else is leading simply because they're not as strong a singer or as familiar with the song as you are. Similarly, don't play an instrument on a song someone else is leading unless you have been asked.

Jam Sessions

  • Jam sessions are made up of a group of musicians, often with many different instruments, all playing the same song. They can be happen in the regular workshop spaces, or in one of several jam-friendly areas around the camp, or even in private rooms. They may or may not be planned.
  • Listen before you start playing, especially if you're not familiar with the other performers.
  • If you come upon a public jam session already in progress, it's still polite to ask if you can join. This is doubly true if you play percussion, brass, or battlefield instruments (drums, horns, or bagpipes).
  • Be respectful of private spaces. If you hear great music coming from a camper's residence and there's no sign welcoming you in, knock or just listen. Please be considerate of nappers and sleepers who share your lodgings.

Dances

  • Anyone may ask anyone to dance. The tradition at camp is to change partners for each dance. We especially encourage folks to ask dancers who have been sitting out, and experienced dancers to ask new dancers, so that everyone gets a chance to dance.
  • People of any gender may dance either role, or both. If you know how to dance one role and want to learn the other, plenty of folks in the hall will be happy to partner with you and help you out. Dance with whoever comes at you. Don't assume that the role someone is dancing is based on their gender presentation.
  • You are always free to say no when someone asks you to dance. You don't have to give a reason you can just say No, thank you. If you ask someone to dance and they say No, take it gracefully and move on.
  • Communicate your needs to your partner so they know how to give you the most comfortable dance. You can always speak up if a dancer is doing anything that makes you uncomfortable: for example, Please swing slower, or, I'd like your hand a little higher.
  • Be sensitive to the safety of your fellow dancers. Never force a partner to twirl or jerk a partner's hand, arm or shoulder. Always ask your partner if it is ok, before doing your own special swing move, twirl or dip.
  • Dance conservatively with anyone you don't know well. Remember that your partner's comfort zone may be different than yours. Respect others personal dance space, do not dance too close or insist on eye contact.
  • Please be thoughtful in your hygiene and do not wear scented products. Some dancers are hypersensitive or allergic to highly scented products such as perfume, aftershave, etc,. and others react to odors such as spices, onions, garlic or body odor.
  • Respect our dance halls. Wear shoes with clean, soft soles. No drinks or food are allowed on the dance floor.
  • Pay attention to the caller during a walk though. Even if you do not need to hear the walk through, allow others to learn.
  • Please thank the band and caller. They are all volunteers and fellow campers!

Concerts

  • Concerts are performances by one person or a small group. There is a general concert every night after dinner that anyone can sign up for or attend. Also, there may be concerts listed in the general schedule in various event spaces. Attendance is open to everyone.
  • Performers should arrive on time and be prepared for any setup they need to do. Please also be aware that it takes a few minutes for people to make their way to a location, so giving the audience a few minutes to arrive is a good idea.
  • Performers should also leave time at the end of their show for announcements, and make space for the next workshop. Consider moving elsewhere if you have time-consuming business-like mailing lists or CD sales.
  • Please hold questions and comments until the end of the performance unless invited otherwise.
  • Unless invited to sing along, please let the performer do the performance. Be respectful of the performer's effort and training, and of the audience's desire to hear the performer and not you.
  • If you arrive late, please wait on the edge of the performance space until the performer is between songs. That minimizes disruption to the audience's enjoyment. If you have to leave early, please wait until between songs for the same reason.

General Camp Etiquette

  • We are counting on you to do your chores. You are asked to do a number of chores depending on your age and the amount of time you stay at camp, and these tasks are important to the smooth functioning of the camp. Please do your share!
  • Also note that leading a workshop is not a chore. Leading a workshop is something you offer to the rest of camp, and is entirely optional. Doing chores is part of the cost of your stay at camp, and is NOT an option.
  • Cover your cough. Especially in the dining hall. Use the chicken wing method.

Ralph

Ralph is the name of a hypothetical camper who also answers to the pronoun they. Ralph gets many things done around camp, from cleaning up messes to arranging chairs to organizing a call to the person who's missing camp this year. The camp runs better with Ralph doing the things that need doing, that are within their capacity and authority to do.

WE ARE ALL RALPH.

So when you think to yourself, Hey, they should do this thing to make everyone's experience of camp better, remember that Ralph answers to they, and that you're Ralph, and see if maybe you should be the one to do that thing.

Thank you for being considerate and welcoming of our fellow campers, and making Camp Harmony the best experience it can be for all the diverse people who attend. We hope you have a great time this year, and for many years to come!

Yours in Harmony,
The Camp Harmony Committee

OK, it's 10 PM (pacific) on December 26, so I'm closing online signups for Camp Harmony workshops. If you'd like to lead a workshop, please sign up in person with a yellow sticky note at camp.
I'll keep the schedules updated here, and at my Website, http://joe-offer.com/

I think you'll find that the schedules at my Website work better on your phone, and you can download each day's schedule each morning. I'll print schedules, too.

See you at camp.

Well, I think the camp was quite a success. If anybody has ideas or suggestions, feel free to post them here.

On the last night of camp, Walker Creek Ranch provided two gooseneck lamps, and they were perfect for stage lighting for our nightly concerts. We'll have to remember to ask for them at the beginning of camp next time.

There was an instrumental session in the room next to the a cappella singing on the last night, and the music bleedover made it difficult for some singers. I think we should keep instrument sessions in the bathhouse building or Maple, and singing in the Discovery Center (Museum, Muir, and Carson). The kitchen in the Discovery Center has good sound insulation, so instrumental sessions were not a problem there.

The only problem with the three rooms in the bathhouse, is that people have to get through them to go to the bathrooms. We'll have to talk about that.

I gather that Buckeye was just fine for dancing, and that Maple was fine for everything.

See you at camp next year.

-Joe-
