"a number of snide postings against himself from a troll that posted as an unnamed "GUEST"."
It's not the unnamed trolls that upset me Vic; rather it's those people I had respect for who chose to stay silent while they cast their evil spell, yet were the first to leap on their chair and cry 'foul' when I respond to them
I think describing criticism of EFDSS as a "personal attack" which scraped the bottom for me
Jim

This has been a misunderstanding and a misreading on my part.
I read:-
That's not something I wrote Vic,
and thought that Peter was stating that someone else was posting as "GUEST Peter Laban"
If I had continued and read the full implication
....it was something I responded to.
So I do apologise to Peter for this misinterpretation.

In mitigation, I need to explain why I jumped the gun and Jim hits it on the head in my suspicions of "... dishonest enough to fake an identity."

In the unhappy days of the BNP fascists trying to infiltrate the folk scene to use it for their vile purposes, I was very active in Folk Against Fascism and this was followed by a great wave of identity theft of my postings on the internet. On Mudcat there were pro-BNP postings from "GUEST Vic Smith"; membership applications (which were quickly removed when I pointed them out to the mods) of "VicSmith" and "Vic-Smith" Subsequent research revealed that this was the work of a BNP member who had been appointed as an 'attack dog' to defame anyone who was posting anti-BNP, pro-FAF anywhere on the internet.
I remain touchy about the subject and remain unhappy about the use of "Guest" postings on this forum because of the possibilities of abuse.
Jim himself will remember that he was unhappy about a number of snide postings against himself from a troll that posted as an unnamed "GUEST".

Vic
Peter Laban is a neighbour and a friend - a very fine piper who, in my opinion, is far too reluctant to promote his own talents, but would rather spend his time and effort making people aware of unknown players like the late concertina player, Kitty Hayes, who he befriended and recorded with.
As far as I can see, everything he has written here is accurate
I find it somewhat distasteful that anybody should suggest that he sis dishonest enough to fake an identity
Peter makes many valuable postings to this forum - he does so politely and self effacingly - would that more dod the same

Fair enough, I wasn't completely au fait with the details of that one. But thought it could fit the list as an event dedicated to a female player.

The UK the new Julia Clifford one.
The 'I looked East and I looked West' weekend for Julia was a one-off rather than the first year of a new festival. I was fortunate enough to be there and it was a thoroughly enjoyable event.

Vic, the question was asked in an anonymous Guest post @ Date: 02 Sep 19 - 09:26 AM.

I quoted the question in my reply of 03 Sep 19 - 09:53 AM.

As far as I can see the only confusion is you taking my quote as the original posting of the question. And ofcourse the identity of the anonymous Guest(s).

And I am indeed the same person mentioned on the sites you mention.

But, to get back to the original question,I think we have safely established there are in deed festivals in Ireland dedicated to female players: the Nell Galvin festival in Moyasta (now sharing the dedication as the Galvin/Crotty weekend for their deceased committee member Peadar Crotty) and the now defunct Mrs Crotty weekend in Kilrush (replaced by the Kilrush set dancing weekend) and in The UK the new Julia Clifford one.

This does point to a problem with GUEST posters who post under their own name. Some, like Jim Bainbridge, I've known well for decades and know what their opinions are and what they are likely to post here; but as far as I remember I have never met Peter Laban so it becomes difficult to know if:-
1] The posts that carry his name actually come from him
2] The denials saying That's not something I wrote Vic actually come from him.
3] If the person who posts as GUEST Peter Laban is the same person as the one mentioned on (for example) http://www.uilleannobsession.com and https://www.concertina.net.

Peter Laban wrote:-

Mrs. Crotty was the namesake of the “Eigse Mrs Crotty” Traditional Music School and Festival, a yearly music festival in July in Kilrush. We went about 20 years ago and it was great.

'Not heard of this lady-'

Didn't stop them naming a festival in her honour. And the Crotty festival ran for years in Kilrush and then died.

Not heard of this lady- seems lots of MEN have dedicated festivals but a striking lack of women- why not Mrs Crotty, Lucy Farr, Bess Cronin, Margaret Barry etc?
Lots of younger Irishwomen musicians & singers who could be candidates in the future- hope it will be the distant future if being dead is a requirement

It's great that that this man has been recognised like this- festivals have been set up in honour of local musicians in Ireland, but then faded with the memory of the man* - little chance of that happening with Chief O'Neill!

* is there any such traditional festival in honour of a FEMALE musician in Ireland?

Thanks for your kind words Dick- we had many happy musical years around West Cork & later in Leitrim- we miss many old friends, but having left Ireland twice now, not likely to return!

Scotland makes a lot more sense nowadays, the main downer is this bloody stupid Brexit- in that context, we've both joined the SNP...
all the best Jim & Francie

nb keep up the good musical work over there....

Dick- I used to play at the Colomane pub nearby when this festival started & the stone was dedicated & well remember it- it was the ONLY dry Sunday that year- 1998?- in fact that awful summer encouraged us to head to sunnier climes!
