The first time I sang with musicians they asked me for a key, I had no idea. So I just sang and guitar turns to mandolin and says, They're a folkie... Play in G.

Half a horse.

But you only need a single G to get a whole one going!

”4th string on a G-tar”

Errrrrrmmmmm......Tattie, the 4th string on a guitar is ‘D’, ‘G’ is the third string. Guitar strings are listed alphabetically from the thickest to the thinnest - EADGBe - but they are numbered the reverse, from the thinnest - high ‘e’ - to the thickest - low ‘E’.

I worked with a guy who said he got his PhD for getting one more decimal place on one of the constants. It was over 40 years ago now, though, so I forget which one.

Precisely, except that I've argued for years that the 8 in that should be a 7. Or maybe seven and a bit.

G is a thing which rhymes with B, C, D, and E.

This is often considered proof that whoever named the letters of the alphabet never tried to tell fellow musicians in a noisy room what key a song was going to be played in.

The true definition of G is that it's a note that, in a session, will be presented to you at least fifty cents either way if you ask a fiddle player for it.

It has an air on it.
Lowest string on a fiddle, 4th string on a G-tar.

"G" (or "Gee") is a mild expletive used to circumvent the biblical commandment about not taking the name of God in vain. Instead of saying "God", the speaker only says the first letter of God's name. This keeps the speaker from going to Hell because God is totally clueless.

Going back to the OP. The G in lamps seems to refer to bi pin lamps or there bases, most of which are on some ISO standard. See here

Sometimes, as in mobile phones, it does represent a set of distinct and incompatible standards. But more often it is pure marketing. I will not say which category is the better fit for Steve's example.
