Subject: Lyr Req: Borneo - Kweskin Jug Band
From: PHJim
Date: 08 Sep 19 - 12:59 PM

I'm looking for the lyrics to a song called "Borneo" that I heard on the first Kweskin Jug Band LP. It was also recorded in 1028 by the Frankie Trumbauer Orchestra and I've heard Michael Cooney do it with extra lyrics where he rhymed "Borneo" with "forlorneo".
If you have the chords I'd appreciate them as well. Thanks.

BORNEO
(Walter Donaldson)
As recorded by Ben Bernie & His Hotel Roosevelt Orch. (vocal: Scrappy Lambert) - 1928

Way down south, way down in Borneo
There's a wild dance called The Borneo
Way down on Borneo Bay
Boo-boo-boo-boo-boo-boo

Even though you've got a corn-e-o
You'll dance till the break of dawn-e-o
Right down old Borneo way
Lah-lah-lah-dah-dah-dah

Wild man stands with his clothes all torn-e-o
Toot-toot-toots on his bamboo horn-e-o
And the bamboo babies start to sway

When you see them do that Borneo
You can put your jewels in pawn-e-o
Way down on Borneo Bay

That's from Lyrics Playground

This is not ideal for chords, but better than nowt. You may need a few times through to get the chord pattern, or maybe not.

Subject: Lyr Add: I WISH THAT I’D BEEN BORN IN BORNEO
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 08 Sep 19 - 09:30 PM

There are surprisingly many popular songs about Borneo.
From the sheet music at Mississippi State University:

I WISH THAT I’D BEEN BORN IN BORNEO
Words by Grant Clarke; music by Walter Donaldson, ©1920.
‘Successfully introduced by Eddie Cantor in George LeMaire’s “Broadway Brevities”’

1. A friend of mine had some fine photographs he took,
Kept them in a book,
And let me take a look.
There were scenes of some queens down in Borneo.
First I glanced,
Then I danced,
Then I hollered: “Oh!”

CHORUS 1: I wish that I’d been born in Borneo
If half the photographs are really so.
Say, can you picture me
Beneath the pepper tree?
I’d be so peppery with all those wild women!
There’s very little clothing worn-e-o,
And no tight shoes to hurt your corn-e-o. Oh!
Give a girl a ring down there when you propose;
Then she’ll take the ring and stick it in her nose.
I’ve been wasting half my life, I know.

I wish that I’d been born in Borneo.

2. The friend of mine showed his fine pictures to my dad.
Daddy wore a smile
For the longest while,
Showed a few pictures to dear old Uncle Josh.
Uncle blinked,
Then he winked,
Then he hollered: “Gosh!”

CHORUS 2: I wish that I’d been born in Borneo
If half the photographs are really so.
Say, can you picture me
Beneath the pepper tree?
I’d be so peppery with all those wild women!
There’s very little clothing worn-e-o,
And no tight shoes to hurt your corn-e-o. Oh!
You should see them when they’re dressed for Sunday school.
You would think they just came back from the swimming pool.
Ev’ry man has twenty wives or so.

I wish that I’d been born in Borneo.

The Internet Archive has a recording by Frank Crumit from 1920.

Subject: Lyr Add: KING OF BORNEO (Frank Crumit)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 10 Sep 19 - 09:00 AM

The following lyrics are from the sheet music at The National Library of Australia.

You can hear a recording by Frank Crumit at the Internet Archive.

KING OF BORNEO
Words and music by Frank Crumit, ©1929.

1. Oh, the minstrels sing of a Borneo King ten thousand years ago
Who ruled his land with an iron hand, this royal so-and-so.
He loved to chase the bounding stag within the royal wood.
He was also fond of applejack and the ladies did him good.

CHORUS 1: Oh, a neighb’ring queen was a gay colleen; oh, a gay colleen was she.
She loved to play in a kittenish way with the king across the sea;
So she sent a special message by a royal messenger
To ask the king to come and spend a week or two with her.

2. King Borneo old had a rival bold whose name was King Kachoo.
He swore he’d stop this wedding ‘cause he craved the lady too;
So he sent the Duke of Durham to steal the queen away
And foil the king with the diamond ring, all on a summer’s day.

CHORUS 2: When the news of this foul deed was heard within old Borneo’s home,
The king he swore by the shirt he wore he would have his rival’s dome;
So he sent the Count of Asthma, who was sneezing very bad,
To go and pay the king a call and give him what he had.

3. The Queen grew very weary when she heard him cough and sneeze.
She decided that old King Kachoo was a royal hunk of cheese;
So she hurried back to Borneo and gave the King her hand,
And the strains of Hiawatha were played by the royal band.

CHORUS 3: They had a royal wedding; all his subjects wished him well.
The dancers danced and the horses pranced; oh, Mister, it was swell.
Old King Kachoo in his bungaloo he heard the strains of jazz.
The royal pair they passed him there and gave him the royal razz.

Subject: Lyr Add: WAY DOWN IN BORNEO-O-O-O (Collins&Harlan)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 11 Sep 19 - 04:59 PM

The Internet Archive has 2 recordings of this song sung by Arthur Collins and Byron G. Harlan: a short version and a longer version.

The following lyrics are from the sheet music at the University of Maine:

‘WAY DOWN IN BORNEO-O-O-O
Words by John H. Flynn, music by Al Piantadosi, ©1916.

1. In the land where chimpanzees
Monkey ‘round the bamboo trees
Just as the sun is setting, wondrous sights you’ll see:
Dusky lovers meet their mates.
‘Neath the date trees they keep dates.
If you could see them spooning, you would want to be:

CHORUS 1: ‘Way down in dear old Borne-O-O-O-O,
Where the banyans grow-O-O-O,
Big chief,
Dress’d in his fig leaf,
Sits by his jungle bungalow,
And when they sing and dance and play,
Why! even monks are led astray.
Dancing girls all wear a smile.
That’s the reason men go wild,

‘Way down in Borne-O-O-O-O.

2. There you see in broad daylight
Darkest Eve with darkest knight
Dancing the Bornese wiggle; some bear* there, all right,
And you see a jamboree,
When a monkey up a tree
Full of that mellow moonshine, goes out on a spree.

CHORUS 2: ‘Way down in dear old Borne-O-O-O-O,
Where the banyans grow-O-O-O,
Big chief,
Dress’d in his fig leaf,
Sits by his jungle bungalow,
And when they sing and dance and play,
Why! even monks are led astray.
Dairy maids then leave their huts,
Go a-milking coconuts,

‘Way down in Borne-O-O-O-O. Whoa!

* Collins and Harlan sing “dance” which makes a bit more sense.

Where the banyans groooow is not the same song as even though you've got a corneo, is it?
