Subject: RE: Enq: Georgia On My Mind VERSE music From: Reinhard Date: 11 Sep 19 - 12:06 AM Georgia on My Mind Hoagy Carmichael / Stuart Gorrell Georgia, Georgia, the whole day through Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind Georgia, oh Georgia, a song of you Comes as sweet and clean as moonlight through the pines Other arms reach out to me Other eyes smile tenderly Still in peaceful dreams I see The roads leads back to you Georgia, oh Georgia, no peace I find Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind |
Subject: Lyr Add: GEORGIA ON MY MIND (Carmichael, Connelly) From: Doug Chadwick Date: 11 Sep 19 - 05:17 AM VERSE 1 Melodies bring memories that linger in my heart Makes me think of Georgia. Why did we ever part? Some sweet day, when blossoms fall, and all the world's a song I'll go back to Georgia, 'cause that's where I belong CHORUS Georgia, Georgia, the whole day through Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind (Georgia on my mind) Georgia, oh Georgia, a song of you Comes as sweet and clean as moonlight through the pines Other arms reach out to me Other eyes smile tenderly Still in peaceful dreams I see The roads leads back to you Georgia, oh Georgia, no peace I find Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind VERSE 2 Bygone days of happiness still haunt me all the while Nothing could compare with my Georgia's sunny smile That is why I often sigh as down the trail I roam Looking for sweet Georgia because it is my home CHORUS ............. Words by Stuart Gorrell; Music by Hoagy Charmichael Additional lyrics by Reg Connelly I have a songbook, with the words and music, called called "Hoagy Charmicael, 23 Great Songs" published by Chappell Music, New Bond Street, London. There doesn't seem to be an ISBN reference. I don't know which are the additional lyrics by Reg Connelly, but my guess would be Verse 2. Copyright is dated as 1930 and 1958 so it seems likely that the additional lyrics appeared in 1958. DC |
Subject: RE: Enq: Georgia On My Mind VERSE music From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 11 Sep 19 - 05:41 AM Mildred Bailey sings the opening verse here: Georgia On My Mind. I have 14 recordings of the song on my computer and Midlred Bailey is the only one that sings the verse (including Hoagy Carmichael himself!). If you want an abc for the melody and chords, I can put that up later. Mick |
Subject: RE: Enq: Georgia On My Mind VERSE music From: Doug Chadwick Date: 11 Sep 19 - 06:03 AM Beat me to it Mick. There are two Mildred Bailey versions out there - one recorded in 1931 and the other in 1941. In each case, she sings just the one verse, which fits with my idea that verse 2 was added later. DC |
Subject: RE: Enq: Georgia On My Mind VERSE music From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 11 Sep 19 - 06:28 AM Thanks for the info on the other recording Doug. As an aside, according to Furia and Lasser in America's Songs The Stories Behind the Songs of Broadway, Hollywood, and Tin Pan Alley, Carmichael had never been to Georgia when he wrote the song! (and although Stuart Gorrell gets a writing credit, it seems that Hoagy was responsible for most of the words). Mick |
Subject: RE: Enq: Georgia On My Mind VERSE music From: GUEST Date: 11 Sep 19 - 08:17 AM Thank you everyone. I'll nut it out by ear listening to Mildred. I saw it there on YT and just assumed it would be a chorus only rendition like all the others. Jon |

SBN or Standard Book Numbering didn't start until 1966, and the ISBN or International SBN until 1967, so books published prior to those dates wouldn't have had them. |
Subject: RE: Enq: Georgia On My Mind VERSE music From: Doug Chadwick Date: 11 Sep 19 - 11:22 AM My book was first published in 1979. I can't remember exactly when I bought it but it was, most likely, after 1990. DC |

Subject: RE: Enq: Georgia On My Mind VERSE music From: GUEST,S. Deegan Date: 23 Sep 21 - 11:47 AM There are actually three versions by Mildred Bailey. One has a spoken intro that mentions Peachtree Street in Atlanta. |
