Subject: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: Nigel Parsons Date: 23 Sep 19 - 11:54 AM Here we go again. A good start on Friday with (the hosts) Japan beating Russia. Three of the 'Home Nations' recorded initial wins, but as Scotland played Ireland in their first games, it could never be a clean sweep for the Home Nations. The other two teams who play in the 'Six Nations' competition (France & Italy) also started with wins (over Argentina & Namibia respectively). I was up early today to watch the Welsh match. Well, I say 'early', but when you're retired the definition of 'early' changes. Next Welsh match is on Sunday with kick off at 08.45 (UK time) against Australia With ITV showing all matches they are available on 'free-to-air' in UK. Also 3 minutes (approximately) of highlights of each match can be found on Google |

On Sunday, I arose to the braying of a Welsh commentator waxing lyrical about George North. A bit weird with pre-church tea. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: Nigel Parsons Date: 26 Sep 19 - 06:54 AM Here we go again England vs USA Not forgetting that USA were world champions for several decades |
Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: Charmion Date: 26 Sep 19 - 08:17 AM Canada has been crushed. Again. By Italy. Nothing to see here. Move along! |
Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: Nigel Parsons Date: 26 Sep 19 - 09:56 AM England beating USA by 45-0. The klaxon goes for full time, and play continues until the next stoppage. Instead of just kicking the ball out of play (as they had numerous opportunities to do) England decide to try to increase their win, but fail to score a further try, lose the ball to USA, who then go on to pull the score back to 45-7. GO USA! |
Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: Raedwulf Date: 26 Sep 19 - 11:10 AM Something, Nigel, they would never have done if the prospect of a score against mattered in the slightest. I wouldn't make too much of it. Decent performance from us. Better than I expected, in truth, given the number of changes, and better, albeit against weaker opposition (sorry Yanks, but this Yook expects Tonga to beat you in due course), than in the opening game. Still a long way to go, though! |

Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: beachcomber Date: 29 Sep 19 - 07:45 AM Japan 19 -- Ireland 12 !!!!!!!!!!!!!! That'll take some ink and breath ? 1. Ireland were over confident, especially after those first two easily managed tries ? 2. Ireland were tired after their effort against the Scots the previous match. 3. Ireland had two less recovery days than Japan. 4. Japan forgot that Ireland were supposed to win 5. Japan didn't play fair, they "imported" big lads. 6. We'll beat them next time ? OK, now I don't want to hear any more about it ! |
Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 29 Sep 19 - 10:24 AM ...Kaizen, maybe? Either way, it will surely generate interest/fill stadiums. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: Nigel Parsons Date: 29 Sep 19 - 12:25 PM A great game this morning from Wales & Australia. I say Wales & Australia deliberately ('&' rather than 'vs.') because both teams played well to make something of a spectacle of open rugby. For anyone who has yet to watch I won't spoil it with the result, as it comes right "down to the wire"! |
Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 29 Sep 19 - 12:42 PM It would be equally difficult right now to convince Japanese and Welsh that Rugby League is a better game but the changes made at and since the split WERE for the better; as in the poem above, I would go further and do away with scrums altogether, which in RL have become a token gesture - akin to the tunnel ball we used to play at school in Sydney. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: Tattie Bogle Date: 30 Sep 19 - 10:54 AM A bit more cheer in the Scottish camp after this morning's match! When did you last see TWO penalty tries being given in one match? |
Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: Nigel Parsons Date: 21 Oct 19 - 06:23 AM Well, we're down to the last four. Next weekend's matches: England v New Zealand Wales v South Africa. I won't be cheering England on in the first game, but as long as Wales beat South Africa I would prefer a Wales v England final. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: MikeL2 Date: 21 Oct 19 - 02:44 PM Hi Nigel I watched all the games this weekend. Great games to watch. Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: Raedwulf Date: 02 Nov 19 - 03:05 AM 2 hours till kick off. Too early for the Earwig song? You know the one - "Earwig-o! Earwig-o! Earwig-o!" P.S. Japan actually play in SH rugby's second tier comp (along with Canada & the US, plus the 3 PI teams). What I'm really hoping for from this RWC (apart from an England win!) is that Japan & Fiji get invited to join the SH T1 competition (Japan is surely a commercial no-brainer, Fiji not so viable) with a promotion / relegation spot to encourage the T2 nations. And that would also make space for Uruguay & Namibia in the T2 comp (since Argentina & SA are already in the T1, this seems the natural fit), who are the only T2 nations without regular competitive rugby. The only thing then required is a play-off match between the 6N wooden spoon & the top NH T2 side (Georgia, usually) but I'm not holding my breath over that closed shop being slightly opened! |
Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 02 Nov 19 - 05:03 AM I don't like mercenary sportspeople - be they coaches/managers or players - nor the cowards who employ &/or support them; thus, I admired Eddie Jones (with a Japanese wife & parent) when he coached Japan NOT England. And, if the coach/manager is not important to the COMPETITION, why foreign coaches/managers?! |
Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: Steve Shaw Date: 02 Nov 19 - 05:17 AM As a rugby non-aficionado, though a footie tribalist par excellence, I'm a bit split. A victory for SA would be great for that country. A victory for us might help Boris... But my tribalistic instincts must prevail. So come on, lads. I'll be listening to Radio 3 this morning, as there's no point watching a game in which I won't have a clue what's going on. And there's Villa and Liverpool later... |
Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 02 Nov 19 - 06:02 AM I.e., Steve - there is a world 11 against a world 11 later. PLEASE turn against the foreign face/REREGULATE |
Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 02 Nov 19 - 06:53 AM I hope Eddie Jones now gets his old job back as coach/manager of Japan and continues coaching Japanese youth, as he has been doing as an aside through the tournament. And as for the 2 estranged codes of rugby, my alternative "One Rugby" |

Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: MikeL2 Date: 03 Nov 19 - 10:21 AM Hi Davw, I agree...England lost to a much better team. South Africa had too much fire power for what is a good England side. Cheers Mike |
Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 04 Nov 19 - 02:47 AM I imagine the main thing Eddie Jones cares about after losing the #rugbyworldcup2019 is his market value going down a bit; &, if Alf Ramsey came out of the grave, he'd probably paraphrase Enoch Powell & say modern English have gone mad with such mercenaries. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rugby World Cup 2019 From: punkfolkrocker Date: 04 Nov 19 - 12:24 PM But Alf won't rise from the grave, and you might imagine any words you like, but you can't shoehorn them into the mouth of any corpses to suit your own ideological delusions...
