From some accounts,
the United States got Paine's brain
and the skull is still in the British Isles.

It puts me in mind of the Catholic Church and
its reliquaries of the saints.
Never mind the foolishness about pieces of the one true cross.
I mean the remains of people like
Theresa of Avila,
whose corpse got carved up something awful,
and so many others like her.

Dick didn't write that song. Graham Moore did.
I remember, for what that's worth, Dick said something about nobody knowing where Paine's bones were. Sounds about right. Sounds like they were rather scattered.

I presume Gaughan must have known that background when writing that song. I'd never heard of it before and Gaughan has never mentioned it when doing an intro, at least not that I've heard.

You didn't have much problem with 'drifting' when you made your Cold War analysis

Some people just can't cope with analogy. Forever showing how it differs. Well, that's analogy for you, imperfect in an imperfect world ........... Just like political football.

Here's another from this parish. keberoxu's thread on Thomas Paine. Relevant with the same analogue flavour.

thinks, is flavo(u)r an analogy, metaphor or synonym? And it is a good job I didn't mention the pulling down of statues - jeez! - Imagine the vituperation over that one!

Howard Fast wrote one of his great novels on this champion of freedom - 'Citizen Tom Paine'
We used to drive through his birthplace, 'Thetford'. in Norfolk, every time we visited Walter Pardon
His immortal words, "These are the times that try men's souls" were used to introduce the wonderful send-up of Boston's Underground Railway System, 'M.T.A.' (Metropolitan Transit Authority) by The Kingston Trio - I'm sure he would have been very amused

How many people know about the bizarre ongoing saga
of the mortal remains of Thomas Paine?
I wasn't taught it in school, I promise you that.
Only when I looked into the life and work of William Cobbett --
embarrassingly recently,
as my USA schooling disregards Cobbett altogether --
did I first read about Thomas Paine's bones.
