Subject: Wanted - camper for 2020
From: Shezinaussie

Hi fellow 'cats'.
There are a couple of Aussie's coming to immerse ourselves in the wonderful world of UK music from May 2020 to September 2020.
We want to buy a camper, and sell it at the end of the trip.
Our budget is about 9000 pounds
Older style, with one berth above the cabin, and one at the back.
Internal condition not that important.
Shower is NOT important - we do need a toilet compartment though - so if the shower don't work, is not an issue as we will stay in campsites and festivals, which usually have showers!
Cooking facilities not that important - I usually cook outside in my Aussie camper, so if the stove don't work, we'll just have a little portable cooker.
Fridge - not important either - Small esky works.
Appreciate if you would share this request with anyone who you know may have a rig that they want to sell sometime in the new year - we are also happy to sell it back at the end of the 4/5 mth period.
my direct email is: shezuk2020@gmail.com

Try to find a Bedford Bambi or a Roma Home

The Bedford Bambi and the Romahome are both excellent little campers but they don't meet the OP brief. The space above the drivers cab is too small for an adult bed although it will do for a child. Also the nearest you get to a toilet compartment is a porta potty under one of the bench seats.

I have had a Bambi for nearly fifteen years and am about to let it go, but a deal has been agreed with a neighbor. The Bedford part of it died six years ago and the Bambi part was moved onto a Piaggio Porter pickup. This has a 1.4 diesel engine which has proved much better than the 1.0 liter petrol engine on the Bedford. I'm going to miss the raised driving position but it's time for me to change to a small car.

Something based on a Ford Transit or similar sized van will be needed to meet the brief.

Thanks for the comment about the Bambi & Romahome - but yes, both are two small - I have seen quite a few that have the bed over the driving cabin in our price range - they are older vehicles - but, because we really don't want to buy it till March/April, that was the reason I put this comment up in case someone is looking to 'tradeup' or similar, and we could get a deal going with them - if you don't ask, you don't get!

Interestingly enough, this just came up locally, and I thought it was a bargain. It's the sort of thing you should be looking for.

Hi John - yes, that Talbort you posted the link for is just about perfect - challenge buying now is storage till we get there - but will follow it up! Bit confused about your 'troll alert' comment - sorry to show my ignorance, but what does 'troll alert' mean? does that relate to my being a genuine person, or am I miss understanding - I certainly can bring in Mudcatters to verify that I am 'ridgy dig' if you require that!

phew...really....maybe they should come to Aussie - we are called Grey Nomads over here, and the only negative press we get is that we are really boring and drive too slow LOL! Thank you for saving me from such indelicate 'horridness'; I seriously had to google the term - I do remember when I was there in 1997, going into a pub, and the 'sign' (in chalk) that 'travelers were not welcome'! Anyway, enough oxygen wasted on that subject - thanks again.

Years ago I was told of a location in Lundun (innit?) near the Oz Embassy where Ozzies who were due to return home parked campers and waited for Ozzies arriving on a tour of the UK, mostly young gap year students. The idea was to buy & sell campers, which sort of worked on an unregulated basis. Vehicles probably rather old.

There is the question of taxing the vehicle and getting an MOT, not to mention insurance (before taxing, though the insurance may be invalid if the MOT &/or tax are not current).
Not having done it from an indeterminate address I do wonder how it is done. On-line obviously, but where do you claim as base? The Oz embassy? Vehicle insurance is dependent on "location", and nationality!. Lundun can make it more expensive.

Anyway visits to clubs, sessions & festivals in my area (look for "map") can be planned using mister.red though the datestamp should alert you to ring ahead.

For other areas I do a list of listing sites and with luck there will be others who will post their lists here. RoW (rest of world)

I have recently taxed a vehicle on line, and the only thing essential to have was the 11 digit reference number off the V5, a means of paying online, and an email address to confirm their receipt of the funds. A mail box address in the UK would suffice for the new V5 to be sent to.
I too remember Aussies buying and reselling vehicles, but from a street near where the London Eye is now, mostly they were VW pop top campers though.

Hi Mr Red - how are you - I do remember you from my trips.
Re the ownership, one of friends in the UK will be the actual owner, and I will be a nominated driver, so that gets around those issues!
The selling of vehicles by Aussie travellers used to occur, but as far as I know, doesn't anymore.
I am just in the process of sending an email to another mate in the UK, and asking him if he will do the job for me - we have the money all ready, but don't really want to buy till March/April, as it will need to be 'garaged' somewhere till after Easter - that is why I am putting out the call to see if someone on this group/or a friend of theirs - may have a vehicle that meets the needs, but they don't want to sell it 'today' - if you don't ask, you don't get! Look forward to seeing you in 2020 - regards Shez

thanks also for the links too the clubs/festivals etc - I am working with a couple of friends who steward a lot, as aiming to do 3 festivals per month, and I would like to steward at all of them - but it is a WIP!

thanks for all your help - it was all in hand, everything on track....we were literally about to put the money down on a van..........but, blindsided by a stoke of medical reality - 'the virus' - so, sadly, we have cancelled our trip for 2020 - but, we'll be back.....2021 will be the year it seems !

Shezinaussie, that's bad timing after all of your good pre-planning but everything should - hopefully - be better next year.

My sis and her hubby went ahead with a pre-planned trip which included Italy. They had to cut short their planned itinerary and just came back to Australia a few days ago. Now they are in self-isolation at home for 14 days.

Helen, in Newcastle NSW

Having been a motorhome owner for over 25 years, you should bear in mind the current motorhome “climate” in the UK.

New vehicles are in extremely short supply - don’t expect to take delivery within 12 months of placing an order!

Second hand vehicles are in short supply; people in the UK not wishing to travel abroad have snapped them all up, and prices are high.

Hire vehicles are booked months in advance. We came across one couple in Scotland at the end of August who were only bale to hire the vehicle for 4 days!

Campsites are busy if not full to capacity. In previous years we would often just go away and find somewhere. Nowadays, we wouldn’t think of going away without booking.
