Looking for the Scots' song with the words (probably a close approximation) "his broadsword he has drawn it and he's thrown the sheath away". Thanks.

Are you thinking of 'Gallant Murray'?

Davy Steele also had a great version, as did "Battlefield Band".

"When we come within the border
we may gar the Cambells claw"

What does the word 'gar' mean in this instance?

"Scour the durk and face the danger
Macintosh has all to do"

What does the phrase 'scour the durk' mean?

Help on this will be much appreciated. I spent over an hour looking for meanings on the www and found nothing there that is other than inconclusive. Thank you.

"Gar" = to make, or to force.

This is a guess on my part, but if it was "scour the dirk", that could mean to "clean the knife", which would make sense in this context.

Sure does. Many thanks, again. It's a great song and I wanted to understand the whole thing so I can listen to it without looking at the words.
