Subject: BS: need advice..train passes england/Spain From: mg Date: 10 Oct 19 - 03:32 AM it is possible i might go on a very frugal trip to europe this spring. i don't want any hassles with railpasses, having to make reservations in a language I don't speak etc...I want to do what I did in England..show my pass and get on the train. England was by far the easiest place for me to travel..not just because of the language. Oh wait..is there still an England??? How will Brexit affect rail passes? I would also like to go back to Spain..loved it...but if all i can afford is england then I will go. Would love to include ireland if a pass covers all. probably 2-3 weeks. probably march. what about seniors? i heard they can ride free or cheap some places. would love advice. i need to travel very simply and cheaply and safely this time. I am checking out rail passes but i need a good sale. |

Subject: RE: BS: need advice..train passes england/Spain From: mg Date: 10 Oct 19 - 03:22 PM i probably will base myself in derby in england...lovely countryside and easy train to london. so many daffodils. perhaps another trip to yorkshire. then i would like to go to county offaly in ireland, where i have a great grandfather from. i also know his parents which is amazing. i also was in touch with a genealogist there who was a devery. i have absolutely no luck with kerry ancestors...but offaly seems different..they say most deverys ended in offaly and there are lots of gravestones etc. they also say we are probably all related. so this should be fun. i think it is fairly close to dublin. |
Subject: RE: BS: need advice..train passes england/Spain From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Oct 19 - 06:14 PM My wife and I got 8-day rail passes in Switzerland for $400 apiece. We could travel any 8 days within a 1-month period. The passes worked very well for us, but that did seem like a whole lot of money. We had an AirBnB that was a 10-minute walk from the Zurich train station, and we traveled to a different part of Switzerland every day. We then went to Zermatt for a week of flower hikes. I like the idea of staying in one place and making short trips. I hope to do this in Berlin in the near future, and I hope I will be able to get a similar pass for rail transport in Eastern Germany. I got an AirBnB for $45 a night in Belfast last month. I hope I'll be able to get a similar deal in Berlin. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: need advice..train passes england/Spain From: mg Date: 12 Oct 19 - 10:15 PM i will be staying in hostels or very cheap hotels. found a nice one in derby for 20/night in low season near train station. good reviews. know great ones in ireland in dunquin and killarney..but i am not seeing anything at all in county offaly. if there is good transportation i might stay in galway and bus or even boat to clonmacnoise or elsewhere. must stay focused on expense. realistically i probably won't make it to spain but i do love spain. |
