All the costumed and uncostumed dogs on the Mall were having a great time! Loved the treats, loved being made much of.

I heard the greyhound Greyhound won.

Most of the n owners also had kids, or many of them did.

Animals should not be treated like surrogate children any dog we had was just that a working dog

I fear most people have misread HOWLoween (for dogs, not people) as HALLoween (for humans). My question is about dogs in costumes, not decorations to houses or people's costumes. Not that those aren't fun! Love them myself!

I bought a pack of chocolates to hand out to any trick or treaters who might come to our door, but none came so we ate the chocolates ourselves. However, the sound of squealing kids together with frequent fireworks in the distance has left our greyhound a quivering wreck this evening. She refused her early evening walk, so we will probably give it a miss until after the dreaded 5 November.

When I was young you went guising with a neepie lantern ( for those not blessed to be in Scotland it is a swede or I believe you call it a rutabaga) Each child would dress up, none of these shop bought monstrosities you and your mum would hunt the house to find something that could be used.

Each child had to have a party piece, a song or a dance or poem, if you were really desperate you might get away with a few jokes. if it was a family house you were then invited in to dook for apples or to try and eat the girdle scone, it was usually tied to the kitchen pulley and covered in treacle or syrup. you never went out of your own street or block of houses.

(context is everthing, the neighbor 2 doors down is displaying about 40 articulated skeletons at a death wedding.)

We enjoy trick or treating. If the weather is warm, we will get over 100 children of all races. We have had years with 200. People who wish to give candy put lights out, so children and parents will know where they are welcome.

The forecast this year is for a high of 42, so it will be cold. I doubt if we will see many children.

I think it's good for the children to see that strangers can be nice to them.

I went to an Halloween Irish Set Ceili last night, plenty of old people dressed in character. The only youngster was a grandson very accurately dressed as the Joker.

There were a couple dressed as a witch and Grim Reaper. I pointed out that with her very fine besom, she was a Grime Reaper. He had a huge scythe with a tennis ball on the end for protection. My observation was that he should have used a putter.

Oh, my sides ache............

The GF wore a nightdress and cap made by her great aunt for a trousseau (never married) in about 1900 and an added veil - even Jacob Marley would have been frightened.

As little as possible.

I grew up in a country village in a predominately Irish-settled area of the Ottawa Valley (eastern Ontario) where Hallowe'en was Mischief Night. Little kids dressed up and went door to door for treats (mostly apples, peanuts, and home-made cookies and fudge in those days), but at about the age of puberty the primary entertainment option seemed to be vandalism, especially setting fires.

Among my very early memories is the scene in which my Dad stood on our front stoop with a .303-cal Lee-Enfield rifle levelled at the gang of "lads" who had piled broken wood and other burnables -- including our old boat, a St. Lawrence skiff -- in a great heap in the middle of Main Street right in front of our house. My brother and I gazed out of our bedroom window as Dad ordered them away and warned that he would shoot the first one he saw set light to the pile. He was using his Whale Island voice, wot he learned in the war to give orders under fire. Then he worked the bolt of the rifle.

The vandals did indeed take off, and Dad and Mr Donohue next door laboured for the better part of an hour to disassemble the bonfire-to-be. Manotick Main Street was part of Highway 16, the main route out of Ottawa along the Rideau River, and the prime concern was that the way be cleared before the first transport truck came thundering through the village on its way to the rail junction at Smith's Falls.

About five years after that incident, we moved to the city where things were a lot tamer, not least because, you know, cops. But Hallowe'en has always been a tainted kind of observance for me.

My experience mirrors Stanron's. I remember apple bobbing but nothing else (there was still sweet rationing).No costumes,pumpkins or Trick or Treat. Pernicious American & commercial import. (and don't get me started on High School proms with stretch limos , corsages etc...)

The Hallowe'en, trick or treat thing is mainly a US phenomenon although it has filtered back to the UK through US TV shows. In my youth, 60 plus years ago in the north west of the UK, it did not exist. We had bonfire night five days later. This was a big thing and had it's immediate roots in 17th Century UK politics and probably pagan roots before that. Any reality concerning those pagan roots would have been suppressed by the Church of course. Smoke has well and truly gotten into our eyes.

Doggy halloween. There were a bunch of lions though only the great dane really carried it off, several cows, 2 dogs dressed as each other, a skunk, a ladybug, bunches of unicorns, and an Airedale dressed as a husky. It was, I have to say, a howl. Oh yeah and a [human] couple dressed as Batman and Robin with their dog dressed as Alfred. I think a dachshund was a beer can...
