Subject: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Hardiman the Fiddler Date: 12 Nov 19 - 11:17 AM Some have asked where’s wysiwyg? It has been a long time since wysiwyg aka Susan it has posted at Mudcat. Susan had a stroke on September 16 and was in a rehab hospital for about three weeks. Presently she is convalescing in a nursing facility near our home. While she has made great strides in recovery, she is not able to use electronic devices such as a cell phone, computers or tablets at this time. Susan says that she doesn’t wish to receive cards, bur I will share posts to this thread with her. I am posting this at her request and conveying her the hope that she may be able to resume participation here in the future. Should any prefer to send greetings by PM, you may feel free to PM me and I will share those with her as well. Greg |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 12 Nov 19 - 11:44 AM Greg, Thank you for posting an update! I fear I already went against her wishes and sent a card. :) Oh, well. The last update on Facebook had her going to rehab. I imagine that "stroke brain" is already kicking into gear and figuring out how to break out of the nursing home asap. Good luck and good wishes to both of you! Maggie |

Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Steve Shaw Date: 12 Nov 19 - 03:54 PM Susan is a thoughtful, measured and passionate member of Mudcat. I can't say she always sees things the way I see 'em but I've always found her contributions to be fair and thought-provoking. If you see this, Susan, it's all the best from me! |

Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Charmion Date: 13 Nov 19 - 10:32 AM Hi, Greg -- your Canadian pass-by guests of yore wish you all the best. We have some lovely photos of pre- and post-Getaway gatherings at your house in Pennsylvania; those definitely were the days, my friend. Susan is much missed in the Declutter thread, where we have been following your adventures in retirement (who ever really retires?) and re-settling. Her spot in the discussion is being kept warm until she is ready to take it up again. |

Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Hardiman the Fiddler Date: 13 Nov 19 - 07:52 PM Today Susan and I discussed that if she is sitting up tomorrow (today she made it for 2 1/2 that I would wheel her down to the computer area so that we can read your messages of encouragement. If she’s not able to do that, we will look at them on my tablet in her room. Your messages of encouragement are important and so, I want to thank you for them. |

Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 14 Nov 19 - 10:08 AM So, this must mean that Hardi is doing all of the organizing and unbagging and unpacking, per your design. The house should be perfect when you get home so you don't have to worry about it (said in jest with a hint of "go for it!" to DH). Gnu was able to get a few day passes before he was completely discharged from the hospital and went home with family in order to organize furniture so he could wheel/walk himself around the place. I'm sure a plan is forming with you two also. Good luck with this, and it really is one day at a time, with you getting stronger every day. Maggie |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Hardiman the Fiddler Date: 17 Nov 19 - 05:15 PM I was just having the chance to share your posts with Susan. She says: thank you all for all the wishes. Recovery is very slow with right side still paralyzed. Therapy is 3 times a day,, and the rest of the time is just lying around. So, your words are very encouraging and help to fill the long hours. |

Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Donuel Date: 18 Nov 19 - 12:40 PM WYS is a brave intelligent compassionate advocate of fairness and justice for the oppressed or ignorantly scorned. She has had several unique personal experiences that some people may find hard to believe or even imagine. Her adult life has been one of service to others. Seldom do we realize the cost involved in such a life envdeavor. There is distress and regret when failure occurs and often little reward when successes happen and there are costs all along the way. She pays those costs and has learned to heal beyond expectations and prior achievements. With faith and a powerhouse of determination her reward has been proven. I have no doubts regarding her progress and celebrate her victories. |

Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: John MacKenzie Date: 29 Nov 19 - 04:36 AM Don't often venture down here, but I'm glad I did. Sorry to hear about the stroke Susan, and hope it hasn't left you too lopsided. I had a TIA (mini stroke) about 5 weeks ago, and (touching wood) I seem to be pretty much recovered. I know yours will have been more severe than mine, but it's amazing how the brain seems to remap, and exercise helps the body functions to improve, over time. Good wishes for a speedy recovery. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Severn Date: 30 Nov 19 - 12:44 PM May your recovery be as speedy, painless and complete as possible. You have been a vital part of Mudcat for a long time. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 12 Dec 19 - 01:42 PM Susan, I hope you're making progress with the physical therapy and have plans to head home soon. Gnu got out of the medical hoosegow a couple of weeks ago, it's your turn next. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 23 Dec 19 - 10:07 AM We're still watching this space for news of your improvement, Susan. Even incrementally forward is a good thing, so keep working with the physical therapists. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 13 Jan 20 - 01:31 PM Susan I hope the new year is bringing you progress on your physical therapy work. And I am curious - has the dog been able to visit you in the rehab facility? They can be such a positive influence. |

Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 19 Jan 20 - 11:16 AM I'm going to the gym now in anticipation of knee surgery next month - the more "in shape" it is ahead of time, the easier the recuperation will be. And I'm working on a buddy system since an old friend moved back to town. Susan, are you to the point of being able to get into the pool again and exercise? I haven't set up a kit for the pool at this place yet, but I'm told that once the bandage is off and pool access is cleared that's the best exercise for the knee (no weight). Have Hardy drop in an update if you can't get to the phone or computer yourself. (And in this political season I seeing miss your pointed posts on Facebook.) |

Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 15 Feb 20 - 12:48 AM I've gone so far as to buy the suit and pack it with a towel in my gym bag. I need to go ahead and find my way through the dressing room to the pool and hot tub and sauna areas before the surgery so I don't have to bumble around later when I'm limping. Thinking of Susan every step of the way. I hope the longer light each day is a helpful part of the recovery process. Coming out of a dark winter is difficult. I hope we'll get an update one of these days. Take care! |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: keberoxu Date: 17 Feb 20 - 08:44 PM refresh (who has access to wysiwyg's Facebook page? I don't, and neither do some others of us ...) |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 07 May 20 - 04:24 PM Unclosing it because it isn't gossip and was started by Susan's husband (Hardiman the Fiddler). I contacted Susan's friend Sabrina via Facebook and got an answer back this morning. She said Susan is texting her and is looking forward to going home. She doesn't know if that will be walking or rolling, but Susan had things under control as far as using a scooter, so when she's ready to go, I think her house will be ready to have her. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: keberoxu Date: 07 May 20 - 06:50 PM Stilly, thank you. It is generous and thoughtful of you. It is especially good to have news of wysiwyg -- her recovery must have been slow indeed, and hopefully steady. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Mrrzy Date: 08 May 20 - 12:01 PM Oh, so good to read, thanks for ferreting! |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Hardiman the Fiddler Date: 28 Jun 20 - 03:28 PM Thank you all for your expressions of care and concern for Susan. She is still in a nursing facility. Recently she has begun to show some signs of progress in the use of her right leg and physical therapy has resumed. She is able to do some leg movements on her own. Her muscles are still extremely weak for months of lying in bed. With the help of the therapist she can do about 10-15 minutes in a standing frame. There are positive signs that she may eventually have enough right leg function to learn how to walk again, but that is is the distant future. Thus far she still has no function in her right hand or movement in her right arm. Other than her physical limitations from the stroke, she is otherwise healthy, aware of what is going on around her and conversant. She has begun to use her phone for texting but is unable to use the internet at this time. She has not been at her Facebook page since she had her stroke. Susan asked that I pass along her progress report, and says “Hi” to all of you in this forum. Greg |

Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: John MacKenzie Date: 30 Jun 20 - 05:25 PM Tell her hi from me Greg, and I hope she gets as much movement back as possible. Maybe she could get a tin foil hat, like the one y'all made for me ;) Made me feel better I know ! |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Penny S. Date: 01 Jul 20 - 09:20 AM Hi, it's been a long time since I was here, and then I come back to find this. All my best wishes for Susan's continued recovery. |

Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: keberoxu Date: 01 Jul 20 - 05:26 PM Surely Hardiman the Fiddler and Wysiwyg know the saying: "God makes a way out of no way." Very true in this case. God keep you both AND more power to your elbows. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Steve Shaw Date: 01 Jul 20 - 05:57 PM And many of us here who wish Susan well don't do God. You could consider keeping that to yourself. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: John MacKenzie Date: 02 Jul 20 - 05:28 AM I don't do the God thing either Steve, but that don't mean others can't in the King James Version of the bible it says "And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity." I have read the Bible, but as I said, I don't do God, however that quote is a good motto to live by, no matter whether you do or don't do religion. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Helen Date: 02 Jul 20 - 05:45 AM As the comment was specifically for Hardiman the Fiddler and Wysiwyg it is irrelevant whether another person on this thread relates to the sentiment or not. A kind thought is a kind thought and should not be dismissed. It is the thought which counts. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 03 Jul 20 - 04:34 PM Steve, the context here is a pastor and a pastor's spouse, so though I don't "do god" either, it should be expected those kinds of wishes will appear and be appreciated. What I wonder is if Susan is keeping track of the news. Has she managed to march (roll) through the halls yet with a Black Lives Matter banner. You know she would. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Steve Shaw Date: 03 Jul 20 - 05:39 PM Well I didn't know that. I made a quick point, I'm sticking to it and I've moved on. I've always appreciated Susan's input and I wish her well as heartily as I can muster! |

I'm lucky to be a bit if a late bloomer, in that Medicare qualified me for more therapy as a rest case. It *is* unusual to get function back so late. If you want periodic updates. PM me a phone number. 3. I'm just finishing copy-editing a book I wrote on my cellphone-- "How to Thrive in a Nursing Home." (It *can* actually be done!) I could use some help raising funds for self-publishing. Thing is, I can't be the payee-- on Medicaid. I don't suppose a team could form here? 4. I'll be at Mudcat only occasionally. The book is taking all my free time. Damn the typos if any! ;-) Can't type any more right now. -S- |

Subject: RE: Where’s wysiwyg? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 12 Apr 22 - 05:43 PM We had a couple of people remark and donate since the link to the Go-Fund-Me campaign was put up - lost in the most recent database corruption - and information was added about other models of power chair that don't cost as much. Without going in search of it now, I will say go look at the Costco offerings. |
Subject: RE: Where’s wysiwyg? From: leeneia Date: 15 Apr 22 - 12:30 PM I just ordered a lightweight, collapsible scooter which can go on an airplane. I ordered it from Amazon, because I've heard of Amazon. In the process of ordering, I learned some things: look at the weight limit for the person the scooter can carry look for four wheels rather than three. four are more stable look at how you steer it. I rejected the joystick. look for a basket or other method of carrying purchases, books, etc if all else fails, sew a walker pocket A lot depends on the weight of the user. There are lots of scooters up to 250 pounds. Mine is 265. I think once the user gets above that, prices increase. Maybe that's why y'all are looking at the $3000 model. |
