I just ordered a lightweight, collapsible scooter which can go on an airplane. I ordered it from Amazon, because I've heard of Amazon.
In the process of ordering, I learned some things:

look at the weight limit for the person the scooter can carry
look for four wheels rather than three. four are more stable
look at how you steer it. I rejected the joystick.
look for a basket or other method of carrying purchases, books, etc
   if all else fails, sew a walker pocket

A lot depends on the weight of the user. There are lots of scooters up to 250 pounds. Mine is 265. I think once the user gets above that, prices increase. Maybe that's why y'all are looking at the $3000 model.

We had a couple of people remark and donate since the link to the Go-Fund-Me campaign was put up - lost in the most recent database corruption - and information was added about other models of power chair that don't cost as much. Without going in search of it now, I will say go look at the Costco offerings.

Lots of Mudcatters over the years have been able to stay at Susan's house during folk events in the area (at her big old parsonage in Pennsylvania.) She could use your help now, and as the saying goes, every little bit helps.

Susan's daughter-in-law has started a Go Fund Me campaign to help raise the funds for a power chair.

Help Susan Hinton get a Power Chair was posted on the Mudcat Facebook page, but more people over here on Mudcat probably actually know Susan to respond.

I just discovered a way to move my R arm forward in the bed! I can push it down, now.

Big relief-- to have found a way to work that muscle when I'm in bed... I'm not able to convince the aides to get me into the chair more than 2-3x/week.

They make bluetooth keyboards and I have one that I sometimes connect to my phone or tablet. Might make typing easier (heaven knows even unaffected-by-stroke users have trouble with the tiny phone screen keypad.)

3. It *was* hard to read/text on my fone while I had a bad eye infection, and it's still hard typing w my non-denominant hand.:-) I have put up with typos, because to strokes also affected one eye, and this former proofreader is a stickler for correct spelling! ;-)

I'm back.

1. Hi all, you take my breath away w your posts. I thank you, from the heart.

2. I'm still in nursing care. I'm lucky to be a bit if a late bloomer, in that Medicare qualified me for more therapy as a rest case. It *is* unusual to get function back so late. If you want periodic updates. PM me a phone number.

3. I'm just finishing copy-editing a book I wrote on my cellphone-- "How to Thrive in a Nursing Home." (It *can* actually be done!) I could use some help raising funds for self-publishing. Thing is, I can't be the payee-- on Medicaid. I don't suppose a team could form here?

4. I'll be at Mudcat only occasionally. The book is taking all my free time.

Damn the typos if any! ;-) Can't type any more right now.

Steve, the context here is a pastor and a pastor's spouse, so though I don't "do god" either, it should be expected those kinds of wishes will appear and be appreciated.

What I wonder is if Susan is keeping track of the news. Has she managed to march (roll) through the halls yet with a Black Lives Matter banner. You know she would.

I don't do the God thing either Steve, but that don't mean others can't in the King James Version of the bible it says "And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity."
I have read the Bible, but as I said, I don't do God, however that quote is a good motto to live by, no matter whether you do or don't do religion.

Thank you all for your expressions of care and concern for Susan. She is still in a nursing facility. Recently she has begun to show some signs of progress in the use of her right leg and physical therapy has resumed. She is able to do some leg movements on her own. Her muscles are still extremely weak for months of lying in bed.
With the help of the therapist she can do about 10-15 minutes in a standing frame.

There are positive signs that she may eventually have enough right leg function to learn how to walk again, but that is is the distant future.

Thus far she still has no function in her right hand or movement in her right arm.

Other than her physical limitations from the stroke, she is otherwise healthy, aware of what is going on around her and conversant.

She has begun to use her phone for texting but is unable to use the internet at this time. She has not been at her Facebook page since she had her stroke.

Susan asked that I pass along her progress report, and says “Hi” to all of you in this forum.

Unclosing it because it isn't gossip and was started by Susan's husband (Hardiman the Fiddler).

I contacted Susan's friend Sabrina via Facebook and got an answer back this morning. She said Susan is texting her and is looking forward to going home. She doesn't know if that will be walking or rolling, but Susan had things under control as far as using a scooter, so when she's ready to go, I think her house will be ready to have her.

I've gone so far as to buy the suit and pack it with a towel in my gym bag. I need to go ahead and find my way through the dressing room to the pool and hot tub and sauna areas before the surgery so I don't have to bumble around later when I'm limping. Thinking of Susan every step of the way.

I hope the longer light each day is a helpful part of the recovery process. Coming out of a dark winter is difficult. I hope we'll get an update one of these days. Take care!
