let's change the date of thanksgiving. it is a horrid mess with the weather, bomb cyclones etc... to mid october which it might have been originally. i personally do not enjoy thanksgiving so would be fine with not having it, but that is just me. tie it in with canadian thanksgiving, or move to columbus/NA day, or move close to halloween but no overlap so children can be home for halloween. much easier for elderly to travel. still waits in airports etc. but getting to airports and destination much easier. better all the way around. and we would not have to hear people complaining that christmas decorations are up too early. have a true harvest festival. i think everyone would be happier and less stressed out with holidays too close together, not that everyone does both.

Interferes with Halloween?

Who are you thanking and what for? God for the harvest? Do you think that Zimbabweans should be thanking God for the harvest? Why don't you think that the hard-working farmers should be thanked more? Why don't you just use the whole notion as a bloody flimsy excuse for having a good time? Now that's what I CALL sensible!

Interferes with Halloween?

No, it interferes with history, fact, and responsibility.

See "400 years" thread.

Of course, I suppose we should be thankful for the ordained by god "chose one" Donald Fuckwit Trump.

Thanksgiving in October works for us Canadians Of course, ours is a harvest festival. Period.

Plus, who wants to travel in November? Nobody with good sense.

We think we should celebrate everything all the time and have a damn good time. Leave God out of it and you have perfection!

it would interfere with halloween if children had traveled to somewhere and were not home for halloween, which is where most would prefer to be.

not sure when Zimbabweans would have a harvest festival, although something called a harvest festival was held in april this year. might have multiple harvests in warm climate..don't know. and perhaps they don't have a warm climate all year. i shall have to look.

Hollow Thanks sounds about right.
The Edmund Fitzgerald faced the storms of November.

I'm thankful that I'm not consumed with hatred, and I can avoid those who are are... and that I can turn off the stupid TV. I'm thankful for kind, loving people. I'm thankful I'm fairly healthy. I'm thankful mosquitoes are mostly dead.
I wouldn't mind having the holiday tied in with NA day, but I like having more holidays, not fewer, and I love the season's colors and smells, and the wild turkeys flocking up and foraging en masse. October has enough events, and November needs something to balance the impending snow-and-ice season.

It's a good thought, mg. But Thanksgiving in late October would conflict with Halloween.

I used to think we should move Halloween to late September, but a school teacher persuaded me otherwise. She said, "It takes till September to get them calmed down from summer, and Halloween would get them all excited all over again."

Too bad.

i think it should be done so it does not conflict with halloween, which is a huge event for the kids..but it could be close. i think best idea, which i think overlaps with canadian thanksgiving, is our usual columbus day, which is a holiday for some but not all..could be made a holiday for all, plus the friday before..think columbus day falls on a monday..it is not a big day for those not of italian heritage I think..could be wrong. it is quite controversial to celebrate it and moves are afoot to tie it into indigenous people day..which i think would tie in with thanksgiving..not to everyone's satisfaction of course. there are issues with farmers still harvesting that time of year...they probably could not travel but people could travel to them. my issue is mostly travel safety. look at what went on a couple of days ago. people spending 17 hours in their cars on a frozen highway. of course, someone dumber than dumb allowed them to proceed without checking for chains, which were required..then they slid around and tow trucks could not get to them. if it says chains required, have a person or a robot or a drone check for chains and turn them back. Plus it would be so pretty to drive in earlier fall..leaf watchers etc..as opposed to howling blizzards and bomb cyclones. and people could decide in their families they still want to have the late thanksgiving and complain about people putting up lights too early etc.

We never have any problem sorting Thanksgiving from Hallowe’en, which are about three weeks apart in these parts.

It helps if you don’t go nuts for either of them.

A very sane response. And, I might add, you can't shift Halloween. It's the day before All Saints which is a holy day of obligation. Try to shift that and you'll have Joe on your back in a trice...

keeping a bit of distance between halloween and thanksgiving would be for the sake of children traveling to visit grandparents etc. and get them home for the holiday at home. i would love to see thanksgiving almost evaporate myself but i have never liked it. to me the food is like a school lunch..ok but not worth taking a bus in the pouring rain too..or three buses on a holiday schedule. another reason to move it to october..the sheer dreariness of the weather for those taking public transportation...just even local. i am so glad it is almost over for this year. i went to the beach and went to mcdonald's for breakfast and that is more than enough.

As this world is such a vale of tears, I'd say that any excuse to take time out, cook up something nice and have a bloody good time for a day or two is a grand thing. You have Trump, dammit. As long as we remember the vast majority of humanity who struggle. An inconvenient but necessary thought.

Steve, we do that every week. We call it "Saturday and Sunday".

But then, we're old farts with no one to please but ourselves. Oh, and the cats, who are good at helping us have a bloody good time.

Well, remember that as free citizens of a free world, we can have Thanksgiving with our families whenever we want. If dangerous conditions might occur in November, and if school and work schedules allow, we can just go ahead and schedule Thanksgiving for a different month. We don't need government and commercial agreement. It'a family thing.
