I missed this last week - I've enjoyed his cartoons literally all of my life. RIP, Gahan Wilson

Take a look at the Google search results and I'm sure you'll recognize him instantly and find some of your favorites.

The cartoon Mrrzy referred to:

How apt for the season.

I had stumbled upon and just finished reading a bizarre "Illustrated Mystery called "Eddy Deco's Last Caper" and greatly enjoyed it.

He'll be missed. A hero of sorts. May he .ride to heaven on an elevator with teeth after having been swallowed by an overstuffed chair.. .

I used to get a Mad Magazine, and examine all the pages for his tiny little marginal cartoons. I miss the magazine, and I'm sorry he's now gone, too.

I liked the one in the doctor's examination room.
"I think I've found your problem..."
and the poor man on the table, with his shirt off,
has got a small crocodile
clamped onto his back like a large leech.

A woman is walking her poodle one evening, and meets a guy in a trench coat going the other way with what looks like a Komodo dragon on a leash.

Imagine these drawings being made in his study which is practicly Victorian.

btw the trick is to remove the gas tank and allow to dry briefly before shucking from the front and rear.

I used to read Mad Magazine (what kid from that era didn't?) but I don't remember the cartoons Jeri and Mrrzy mentioned. And I'm not sure if I'm seeing any in a search (this seems to be a well-stocked Pinterest page). I'd love to see a link to what you're talking about - I imagine they appealed entirely to kids. :)

Sigh. Another great one gone, with the more modern, and specific, cartoons of the macabre. I had a steady dose of Charles Addams from an early age though Mad Magazine never got into my house, but I did lots long hours of babysitting. I could always find the PLAYBOY stash to look at the cartoons (and sometimes read the fiction). I also remember Wilson's contribution to the SF anthology DANGEROUS VISIONS... A spot that grew...and grew... The only graphic art bit in that anthology series.

In some ways, her reminded me of James Thurber, just with the weird dialed up higher.

Joanne in sort of north-of-Thurber country
