Hamish Henderson - Travelling Folk (BBC Radio Scotland)
BBC Radio Scotland - Bruce MacGregor
11 Dec 2019   Available for 29 days

Bruce MacGregor celebrates the life and work of folklorist, poet,
songwriter and political activist Hamish Henderson who was born in
Perthshire one hundred years ago. Hamish has been described as the
'father of the Scottish folk revival' collecting songs and ballads
from around the country in the 1950's and 60's and sharing this
ancient oral culture with a wider audience. We hear about some of the
key members of the travelling community Hamish connected with through
song. And how he helped American collector, Alan Lomax, to tap into
this rich culture. We also analyse some of his own songs, including
the iconic Freedom Come All Ye.

Featuring Fred Freeman, Janet Henderson, Margaret Bennett, Lori Watson
and Steve Byrne

There was a film about Hamish on BBC iPlayer recently. Its now expired unfortunately.
Without going into the details, for me it begged the question 'did McColl and Henderson ever meet or exchange correspondence.'

GUEST,Roger - yes, they did! For more information on the relationship between the two gentlemen I'd recommend Timothy Neat's two-volume 'Hamish Henderson: A Biography' - which includes an excerpt from a letter that McColl wrote to Henderson in 1951, on the subject of Alan Lomax's visit to Scotland and suggesting that Henderson ought to assist Lomax in his activities there.

Many thanks RA.
I wasn't aware of that book.
There are 2 volumes available as Kindle downloads, so that is my Christmas reading taken care of.

You can listen to Hamish chatting to some of the many people that he collected songs from on two CDs 'Hamish Henderson Collects' and 'Hamish Henderson Collects - volume 2' (Kyloe 107 & Kyloe 110). These are available from Veteran. Here you can hear just how easily he got on with these singers and storytellers. Talk about the right man being in the right place at the right time.

There are plans afoot in Edinburgh to revive the annual “Carrying Stream Festival” which was started way back before the centenary by Edinburgh Folk Club and usually included the best part of a week of concerts, sessions, lectures, etc in honour of Hamish Henderson: it always happened around the date of his birth, Nov 11. Over the years, it had dwindled to just 2 events, but this year there will be far more. For anyone interested and on Facebook, there is already a Facebook page for it, and a website is also being setup.
So watch this space for more details when available.

I wish them well.

The Carrying Stream Festival was arguably an artistic success but never covered itself financially. It didn't matter too much in the early days as Edinburgh Folk Club itself was financially sound and easily covered shortfalls.

However, as time went on and folk club numbers generally dwindled this wasn't as easy. There were also venue issues when The Pleasance closed for refurbishment along with quite a few unsettled years. So, events were gradually scaled back.

One aspect of the festival was that there was two different audiences and it was sometimes hard to please both. Of course, there was some overlap but only to a limited extent.

You had the serious Hamish Henderson aficionados and also the regular EFC audience plus local "folkies". The former were less likely to support the more general folk/trad gigs and the regular folkies were less likely to attend the lecture and other events which were most focused on Hamish and his life.

Also, many EFC regulars couldn't always commit themselves to weekend gigs. For some, it would just simply be a case of "Wednesday's the night for my folk music".

However, if the festival is being run by The Story Telling Centre/Hand up for Trad(?) and based there this makes a lot of sense and could work well.

The dates for the "new" Carrying Stream Festival are November 11-17, and it is hoped that it will include up to nine events.
Here's a link to the new Facebook group for it: feel free to join if you wish. Carrying Stream Festival 2026

Thanks, Tattie Bogle.

I had meant to say "Traditional Music Forum of Scotland" as opposed to "hands Up..."

It seems Bob Murray is having something to do with it too.

Quite a lot! I’ll hope to be playing in the Cafe Ceilidh in the Scottish Storytelling Centre on the Tuesday afternoon, November 17th : there’s a big “bust” of Hamish overseeing the cafe area. And will also hope to get to the Edinburgh Song Session on Sunday 15th.
