Subject: Arty McGlynn RIP From: GUEST,Ballyholme Date: 18 Dec 19 - 01:39 PM Just heard of the passing of Arty McGlynn. A genius of a guitar player and a great loss to Irish music. |
Subject: RE: Arty McGlynn RIP From: Nick Date: 18 Dec 19 - 01:40 PM Sad. Wonderful player. |
Subject: RE: Arty McGlynn RIP From: Helen Date: 18 Dec 19 - 02:02 PM Arty McGlynn and Nollaig Casey's CD Lead the Knave is one of my favourite albums, and that is how I found my absolute favourite O'Carolan tune, Michael Ward (aka Michael O'Connor). I will be eternally grateful for that. Yes, Arty McGlynn was a genius. Very sad |

Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Arty McGlynn RIP From: gillymor Date: 18 Dec 19 - 04:12 PM He was a great melody player and a great backup player. Humors of Ballyloughlin with Paul Brady backing. |
Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Arty McGlynn RIP From: Steve Shaw Date: 18 Dec 19 - 04:44 PM Damn. That's a terrible shame. I first saw him playing in the very first manifestation of Patrick Street in Exeter at the Phoenix in 1987. Arty, Andy Irvine, Jacky Daly, Kevin Burke for chrissake... He was the best of the best when it came to guitar accompanists in Irish music, always tripping lightly, no thick strumming. He also produced the first amazing Four Men And A Dog album, Barking Mad, as well as playing on it. They came to Stratton village hall, a couple of miles down the road from us, in God knows what year in the early 90s, and to Penstowe in Kilkhampton, just up the road from us. Can't remember whether Arty was with them though I'm sure he'd have been there at the first of those. What a man he was. Bejaysus, it's a sad day all right. Here's to Arty... |
Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Arty McGlynn RIP From: Andy M Date: 19 Dec 19 - 04:06 AM That was the pre-Phoenix, Exter Arts Centre; I remember that gig too! He played later on with Nollaig Casey too. Most memorable Irish gig however was with the also late lamented Liam Og; March 31st and after the gig the bar staff had marked up the following day's menu with fare such as Dolphin Steaks etc. Liam was shocked, with me apologising until we realised the date, April 1. |
Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Arty McGlynn RIP From: Nick Date: 19 Dec 19 - 05:32 AM There’s a very good tv documentary about him here - TG4.ie programme |
Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Arty McGlynn RIP From: Nick Date: 19 Dec 19 - 05:39 AM You will probably need to download the TG4 player app to watch the programme |
Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Arty McGlynn RIP From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 19 Dec 19 - 06:23 AM You can watch TG4 online in your browser without the app. The Sé Mo Laoch programme showed him as much a more versatile musician than he would be discussed here. He was a very fine jazz guitarist as well, among other things. It's been a while since I saw it though. |
Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Arty McGlynn RIP From: Nick Date: 19 Dec 19 - 06:27 AM Ok. Must be my ipad |
Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Arty McGlynn RIP From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 19 Dec 19 - 06:32 AM It will probably vary across devices. I can watch both the RTE and Tg4 player on computer in my browser although both reject adblockers and blockers of trackers. |
Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Arty McGlynn RIP From: Nick Date: 19 Dec 19 - 08:09 AM But I can cast it from the app to the TV Via Chromecast easier than from computer and it’s more convenient like that. Isn’t technology wonderful? |
Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Arty McGlynn RIP From: Mr Red Date: 19 Dec 19 - 09:28 AM I can watch both the RTE and Tg4 player on computer in my browser Not in FireFox 71.0 (w/o Flash). Complains about being encrypted. Chrome (w Flash) seems to play OK. So there you have it, blame Flash. But it doesn't like a slow broadband, timing out within a minute of a gap. |
Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Arty McGlynn RIP From: beachcomber Date: 19 Dec 19 - 11:40 AM Heard Ronan Collins, on RTE at Lunchtime today say that Arty had played with a Showband early on in his career !!! |
Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Arty McGlynn RIP From: Waddon Pete Date: 19 Dec 19 - 03:33 PM I was very sorry to hear this news. Arty was an inspiration to all guitar players. There are some excellent results on the web if you want to learn more about him. I have added his name to the "In Memoriam" thread and send my condolences to all his friends and family. RIP Peter |
Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Arty McGlynn RIP From: GUEST,Peter Cripps Date: 20 Dec 19 - 08:56 AM Very sad, a wonderful player, played 'The Heartstring Sessions' CD today Will look out my video of the film 'Hear My Song' in which he had a cameo role in an Irish pub music session! |
Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Arty McGlynn RIP From: GUEST Date: 20 Dec 19 - 11:08 AM Sad news, his music and influence will live on |
Subject: RE: 2019 Obit: Arty McGlynn RIP From: Hagman Date: 23 Dec 19 - 06:28 AM If anyone would like "further info" on the TG4 documentary, if you know what I mean, happy to receive PMs. About 1/3 of the interview commentary is in Gaelic, and no subtitles - but all footage of Arty speaking is English. Super film - he's such a straight-shooting no-nonsense character, with a great sense of humour. No wonder he lasted so long as Van Morrison's musical director.... |
