So you are skipping 2020 and heading straight for 2021?

With the prolonged drought and the catastrophic bushfires here in Australia and no end in sight, maybe we should jump ahead one year too in the hope of a better year ahead.

I have a t-shirt which says it all for me for the silly season. It has a green Grinch on a red chair and the slogan is "Merry Whatever".

On the other hand, all facetious t-shirts aside, I really do wish for peace on earth and good will towards all living beings.

I never see "Wossname" but I don't recall
the author who introduced the term to me,
the late lamented Terry Pratchett

(in the US I never read that term in print before Terry Pratchett).

Adding my unreserved good wishes
to all my fellow Mudcatters,
before the site once again
slips beyond reach.
(gnashing of teeth echoing from yesterday)

Yes, keberoxu, although I had heard the word "wossname" on British TV shows, it never really registered in my brain as a word until Terry Pratchett used it.

In Oz we have whatsits, whatchama'callits, whoozama'jigs, thingumy'jigs, thingummy'bobs - well, the list goes on and on. (The ' mark shows the start of the accentuated syllable, in case you are wondering. They aren't spelled that way.) Thingy-poo is also a favourite of mine.

On Feb 19th the DH and I went to the Presbyterian church and sang Christmas songs around the piano. A five-year-old and his 14-month old brother were there, and the DH made a paper airplane, which he threw to each of them in turn. The game was perfectly compatible with singing - no roughness or crying.

It was a happy way to begin the season.

I hope you all can enjoy all the celebrations. Why exclude any of them?

Eat good food and drink good ale (or the beverage of your choice, which is Bombay Sapphire Gin for me tonight....).

Lou and Peter Berryman wrote a song which celebrates the words we use when we can't think of a noun.

When the what-cha-call-ems blossom by the back porch
and the bluish-purple whos-its do the same,
and the bird with yellow on sings a number,
my mind drifts back to charming whats-his-name.

Now that's interesting because I (in southern England) would put the accent on the first syllable of each of those.

And I can add: "how's-yer-father" and "doofer" (the word that will do for the correct one).

And of course a happy New Year to all from me, especially to those who keep Mudcat running (most of the time).

Well, you're right about the accent/emphasis on the first syllable. Maybe I should have said an accent on the first and the later syllables as marked. Now that you have raised this, I'm not sure but I know that there is an accent on the later syllable.

I'll also add whats-her-face, or whats-his-face, whoosywhatsit. The list goes on.

The father of a school friend of mine used to answer "what's that?" type questions with "a hoojar, a pippy, a pippy on the hoojar". I have never heard that from anyone else and I have no idea where the saying came from.

I guess it is time to let Wossname go back to sleep
for another year.
Just one more shout out
to Terry Pratchett before it does, though.
I started a thread called
"crab bucket"
because of something Pratchett wrote in
Unseen Academicals,
one of his Discworld books.

Mister Pratchett never goes out of season.
Have a happy one, everybody.

I did a list of all the Pratchett books we own. There are 59 books in our collection but we have so many that we don't know what we have already so 14 of those are duplicate copies. That means we really *only* have 45 of his books. :-)
