Just read on the internet of the death of the superb banjo player, Pete Stanley. He was the musical partner of both Wizz Jones and of Brian Golbey back in the 1960s and made lots of radio broadcasts with them - particularly on the BBC's 'Country Meets Folk'. Pete and Brian toured all over the country but seemed to find a special place in Sussex where Brian was born and was based.
Reports reaching me told me that he had not been in good health for some time and the last time that I saw him was at Tom Paley's funeral.

Here is his profile from the 'Discogs' website: -
"UK Banjo player Pete Stanley was first taught the banjo by Peggy Seeger, later he developed 3 finger Bluegrass and Clawhammer styles. He is unusual as he plays bluegrass style with his fingernails, not picks. In the 1960s he was in the Tennessee Three (with Dave and Robb Mangunan from California) and, for four years, in a duo with Wizz Jones. He was performed, on and off, with Brian Golby. He has been a banjo maker since attending a course at the London School of Furniture (now London Guildhall University). He plays both open back and resonator Banjos."

Sorry to hear that. I lived in the same building in Haverstock Hill, sharing a flat with Nigel Denver. Martin Carthy and his wife Dorothy lived across the corridor and Pete and his wife was on the same bottom floor.
A great banjo player and person.

I had five or six years working as Pete's partner, we went all over the world, he's known as a great banjo player, but he was also absolutely fine on guitar and dulcimer.
He was a great part of my life and I'll miss him

OMG I just happened to mention, in another thread about wanting to hear Bluegrass music in London, later this month, that the last time I did so was in C 2000, in a North city pub, played by Pete Stanley. I'd heard him quite often on BBC Radio programmes and looked up his possible gig venues before I visited back then. It was quite a small pub and I got to chat briefly with him about Banjo playing. Cannot rem now who the guitar player was who accompanied him and sang.
Rest in Peace Pete, your music was sublime.

Did Wizz give you any idea of when and where the funeral will be?

Myself and several other acquaintances all of whom picked with him regularly over the years until his illness would like to know.

Hi,
its Pete's daughter Saro. some of you will remember me as a little kid probably running around on stage between performances. My best dad in the world sadly past away yesterday. I was with him. I haven't made any funeral plans yet, as my brother still needs to get a flight from New Zealand. Wizz will be the first to know the arrangements. I was though really hoping that there could be a Pete Stanley Memorial gathering somewhere in London sometime soon and all and everyone would be welcome.
This is what dad wanted with lots of music and whiskey drinking !
Saro.

Just looked at the short obituary above. The heading "American Banjo Player" is wrong for starters.

There are several other people that teamed up with Pete over the years. American - Texan I think, Clay Jackson for one (as the Tennessee two), Donnie Scott for another when they appeared at the Lone Star in London. There are more.

He was a regular at the Ballads & Blues Association club in London in the early sixties.

I think there is still a video clip on You Tube of Pete playing the US national anthem to open the Galax Fiddlers Convention some years back.

In the nineties he often appeared at the long running picking sessions at The Hemingford Arms in the Barnsbury area of North London.

I also have a flyer from the sixties for "The Haverstock Hillbillies"; Pete Stanley, Martin Carthy & Redd Sullivan. " For Your Sunday Afternoon Entertainment.

Does this help?

Pete, my father was indeed a 'British' Banjo Player. It was the Tennessee three in the 1960s and he did also perform alongside Clay Jackson who he initially met in Italy. Pete also performed many years later at the Lone Star Saloon in London with Donnie Gillie and also with a number of other musicians during that time. There is also indeed a you tube video of dad at Galax, Virginia playing the Star Spangled Banner the national anthem. This was a 'very' special moment. The funeral service is on Wednesday 22nd January in Exeter Devon and there is also a Memorial Concert/tribute planned later at Cecil Sharp House London for 16th May 2020. Details to follow. We also are planning to show a collection of photos and memorabilia throughout Pete's long career from the late 50's onwards to view at the concert venue.

Is there anyone who could help me write an article about my father, Pete Stanley? Or someone who would like to write it and it could be published in the Papers. I already have a collection of articles and reviews written about Pete over the years for the bluegrass magazines etc. Also a very good documented interview of Pete by John Baldry and Dave Cotton in 1982. Please get in touch.

Just a small point but I believe the year of Pete's birth was 1937 not 1940. This what he led me to believe over the years that I knew him.

I guess there will be a few banjos coming up for sale shortly.

"There are few hands to which the banjo can be safely entrusted and two of those belong to Pete Stanley."
I said something pompous like that this afternoon to a friend who has just got one for his birthday, which led him to Google an me here, very sorry that Pete has gone.

Mostly I played with him in the Admiral Mann. First in the 70s, I suppose, when he would come back from touring (mostly in Scandinavia I remember) and join us in the bitter sweet oddness of Les and Pam's from bar. Then again, 15 or so years ago, with Donny, Laurie and others in the back bar, by then all little red light shades and rustic folderols.

Learned so much from him about playing with other musicians and learned it the hard way.He could be sharp and funny, harsh encouraging and downright unreasonable but he was always remarkable.

I was particularly made up on Pete's 60th, I think it was, when Wizz turned up. I first heard Wizz in the early 60s at Paignton Folk Club and his legendary right hand got me going. I determined to sound like that and I'm glad to say some days I do.

We'd lost touch and I wish I'd heard earlier soI could have paId my respects in Exeter, I was a spending Christmas just up the road.

Go well...
