I took one year of Spanish on Saturdays in eighth grade in 1961-62, and learned the song in Spanish then - I think my teacher said it came from Argentina. I didn't learn the English song until maybe ten years ago. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Down on Grandpa's Farm From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Jan 20 - 11:38 PM The earliest version of "Mi Chacra" that I can find is in the original (1946) edition of The Ditty Bag, a songbook that has been used widely by U.S. Girl Scouts. It's also in a book by Phyllis and Olcutt Sanders titled Amigos Cantando, published in 1948 by the Cooperative Education Service. The English translations from the 1940s are nothing like "Down on Grandpa's Farm." My EWG (educated wild guess) is that "Mi Chacra" was written by a Spanish teacher in the United States, since I have seen no evidence of it being used in Spanish-speaking countries. And I think I'd venture another EWG that the English song was written by Raffi - because I can find no pre-Raffian reference to the song. Mind you, these are "educated wild guesses," so don't put too much faith in them. Here's a terrific performance of "Mi Chacra": |

The French song J'ai perdu le do de ma clarinette is mentioned in one of my books to have "traditional music and lyrics", in another one to be a "student tune". In "Les plus belles chansons", Hachette, 1995, they say on the "J'ai perdu le do de ma clarinette" page that the BBC broadcasted in 1944 a song by Pierre Trémois starting with "Hitler perd Smolensk et bat en retraite / Vous verrez bientôt Hitler perdr' la tête / On n' sait pas jusqu'où ça ira, tralala (bis). Courage, camarades, courage camarade, courage on les aura (bis)" = Hitler is losing Smolensk and is retreating / You'll soon see Hitler losing his head / We don't know how far it'll go, tralala (twice). Courage, friends... courage, we'll get them." I couldn't find it online. |

Sur, the chorus is "O vas, camarada, vas camarada, o vas, o vas, o vas (twice) = Oh, you go, friend, you go, friend, oh you go, oh you go, oh you go". Btw, the lyrics under the staves are miscut, it's ca/ma/ra/da. And there's no such thing as "camarad" in Spanish. According to this Wiki page the chorus was borrowed from "La chanson de l'oignon" sung by the grenadiers of Napoleon's Imperial Guard. |
