First heard this song, myself, from the live and in concert recording
by Marais and Miranda.
Josef Marais took this as a solo,
accompanying himself on guitar.

THE ANGLER'S SONG

Words by Izaak Walton
Music by Henry Lawes

Man's life is but vain,
For 'tis subject to pain
And sorrow, and short as a Bubble;
'Tis a Hodg Podg of Businesse,
And money and care,
And care and money, and trouble.

But we'll take no care,
While the weather proves fair,
Nor will we vex now though it Rain;
We'll banish all sorrow
And sing till tomorrow,
And angle and angle again.

-- first published in 1669.
1898 edition edited by Arnold Dolmetsch for Boosey and Co., from
Select English Songs and Dialogues of the 16th and 17th Centuries, Book I, London, England.

OOOPS my bad!   I should have finished my research ... because
SOMEBODY ELSE wrote the text.

Yes, Arnold Dolmetsch says the words are by Izaak Walton,
and so do other editions of the song.
But I have just been set straight by the Encyclopedia Brittanica.

The words to The Angler's Song are credited,
if you know where to look, to
John Chalkhill (1595 - 1642).

After including "The Angler's Song" in his first edition of
The Compleat Angler,
Izaak Walton was kind enough,
for the printing of the third edition,
to identify "Jo. Chalkhill" as the author.

I remember that little ditty from long ago, probably read it in The Compleat Angler. Thanks for posting those lyrics.
