Subject: BS: Any Russian speakers out there? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 23 Jan 20 - 04:26 AM We have some old handwritten notes of my Grandfathers that are in what looks like Russian but could be Byelorussian or even some Ukrainian. He was a Kuban Cossack orthodox priest. From what we can glean his church was tied to the Ukraine rather than Russia. We know that some of the notes are poetry based on religious texts as a couple have been translated already. The tail end of the book is in a different hand and may have been either my grandmother or a fami!y friend and written after my grandad's death in 1962. Anyone fancy translating the rest as a favour to a fellow Mudcatter? No pay I'm afraid but plenty kudos :-) Cheers DtG |

Subject: RE: BS: Any Russian speakers out there? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 23 Jan 20 - 05:15 AM Thanks, Mr Red. I have some contacts with the Ukrainian church in Manchester anyway so if I get no joy here, I may try them. |

Subject: RE: BS: Any Russian speakers out there? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 25 Jan 20 - 02:44 AM Refresh Or should I say ?????????? (if that doesn't display right, it was the Google translate of the Russian for refresh :-) ) |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Russian speakers out there? From: Mr Red Date: 25 Jan 20 - 04:06 AM I was told by the guy who corrected my Russian page that Byelorussian was Russian with a lisp. Not kind, but it is a bit like Irish/Polac/Belgie jokes, neighbours' put-downs. And isn't Cossack Ukrainian anyway? Goggle translate offers Belarussian (sic) & Ukranian so there must be sufficient differences to warrant their service. Yet they don't offer Wallonie or Vlamms (Belgian) which must have dialectal differences over there root languages. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Russian speakers out there? From: Rob Naylor Date: 26 Jan 20 - 02:13 PM My Russian won't be good enough to translate that kind of thin, unfortunately. It's a bit rusty now anyway, as I haven't been there for 4 years. |
