Subject: Lyr Req: Moonlight & Roses From: beachcomber Date: 05 Feb 20 - 07:25 AM I've searched the records of Mudcat and while the song is mentioned quite often, the lyric is not given anywhere. I have also searched with Google and found the part-lyric chorus that was sung and recorded by many artistes, commencing with "Moonlight and roses bring wonderful memories of you...etc". However, nowhere can I find the Verse lyric, as was recorded by John MacCormack in 1925. I used to hear an aunt and uncle who would sing it as a duet for family gatherings and I would love to have that FULL lyric of Verses and chorus if anybody can help ? The chords to the melody would be much appreciated also. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Moonlight & Roses From: GUEST,Starship Date: 05 Feb 20 - 08:35 AM PS From further reading, the piece originally had no lyrics. Most we do have were from the US. However, MacCormack's take on it is clear enough to be transposed I suppose. Good luck to you. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Moonlight & Roses From: GUEST,Starship Date: 05 Feb 20 - 09:31 AM jim b: a well-played saw is one of the more beautiful sounds one could ever hear. It's hard to find saw players. |
Subject: Lyr Add: MOONLIGHT AND ROSES From: leeneia Date: 05 Feb 20 - 12:20 PM Here you go, Beachcomber. These are the lyrics from the YouTube video linked above. I believe I'll print these out and memorize them myself. When vesper bells are ringing, I hear sweet voices singing as evening shadows fall. It's then my heart grows fonder as through the flowers I wander with thoughts so true, dear always of you, dear. CHORUS Moonlight and roses bring wonderful mem'ries of you. My heart reposes in beautiful thoughts so true. June light discloses the golden dreams sparkling anew. Moonlight and roses bring mem'ries of you. VERSE 2 I oft recall our meeting, our tender, loving greeting. Your smiles still haunt my dreams. And then, alas, we parted. You left me broken-hearted, but still I yearn, dear, for your return, dear. REPEAT CHORUS |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Moonlight & Roses From: GUEST,big al whittle Date: 07 Feb 20 - 04:34 AM great song. just do the middle bit . my Grandma used to sing it. I used to introduce it as a Jim Reeves song, cos he did an album with that title. I think all that stuff is sort of folk. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Moonlight & Roses From: GUEST,jim bainbridge Date: 07 Feb 20 - 06:00 AM hear hear, In the sixties we ran a folk club on a Sunday night in South Shields, but there was another pub in the town, where locals gathered round a piano- where among Tyneside songs and dancing dolls, one man played the musical saw, featuring that very tune. Great stuff & you can't tell me it wasn't FOLK. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Moonlight & Roses From: beachcomber Date: 07 Feb 20 - 07:52 AM Did you say "a musical saw-sir- or, a musical saucer !" :-) Thank you anyway jim and many thanks to Leenia for the full lyric, funny that no lyric site that I could find gave it in full ? What about chords to go with it though and I 'll bring back, happy "memories of" Uncle Chas and Auntie Mary. Thanks again. Beachcomber. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Moonlight & Roses From: beachcomber Date: 07 Feb 20 - 08:11 AM Thanks to all of you again. Oh, Big Al, surely the verse is so beautifully (musically) aligned to the chorus it cannot be excluded ? Thanks for the link to MacCormack too, Starship and Norval. It 's a recording that I had as a youngster, brings back many very old memories when I hear it now. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Moonlight & Roses From: beachcomber Date: 07 Feb 20 - 08:21 AM Thanks a lot Mick, unfortunately (for me that is) the chords given are for Ukelele and are not named, but thank you anyway. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Moonlight & Roses From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 07 Feb 20 - 10:42 AM beachcomber - use this copy then Moonlight And Roses. It also has ukulele diagrams (though for a more common tuning m3 lower than the other), but has chord names with them (Click the Download link and select All(pdf) to download it). Mick |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Moonlight and Roses From: leeneia Date: 09 Feb 20 - 12:38 PM Thanks for the links, Mike. I'd never heard of the Baylor collection before this. I've got to wonder how many copies the publisher thought they would sell in the key of A flat. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Moonlight and Roses From: GUEST,Starship Date: 09 Feb 20 - 01:06 PM http://www.midnitesun.ukart.com/lyrics/lyrics05/wb05p059.txt I don't know if the link is help or hindrance. However, it is what it is. My virus protection didn't go off with the link despite it being a http (and not https) connection. FYI. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Moonlight and Roses From: beachcomber Date: 11 Feb 20 - 06:05 AM Thank you Mike, unfortunately, the ukelele chords are not named in the text of Moonlight & Roses given in that link. The previous song "When it's springtime in the Rockies" does have them named, but not the others. Not to worry, I'll try out some of my own. It's just that I thought it would be nice to get the composer's version. Thank you Starship also, now I have the full lyric. |
