I've been reading a lot of Henry Lawson's work lately and found this little gem about the end of the Australian prospecting, the songs and times of the diggers
Songs of the diggers

Guests have always been welcome to post and to start threads in the non-music section. It's combat. that isn't allowed. Policy here (click).

We haven't had much about Lawson's work lately. It's good stuff. You'll find many Lawson poems set to music at http://ozfolksongaday.blogspot.com/

The Priscilla Herdman Water Lily album is all Lawson, I think.

"The Priscilla Herdman Water Lily album is all Lawson, I think." Seven Lawson poems, and four non-Lawson efforts: Old Wooley, The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, Jock O'Hazeldean, and Dancing at Whitsun.

I didn't expect any aggro.   Just though the little story had a bearing on what makes folksong so special to us all. I've been in that old bark kitchen many's the time, though it looked different the spirit was the same.

Steve, that was uncalled for. As Joe says, any Guest can start a thread in this section, and the subject is interesting to me if not to you.
Hello there akenaton, hope you're well and thank you for that link.

I haven't a clue who Henry Lawson was, or any real inclination to find out more..

But having looked in this thread out of curiosity,
I must add I think Steve was out of order..

It's that kind of gratuitous behaviour that only serves to further confirm
our opponent's prejudices of bullying lefty cabals..

.. and will also help persuade middle of the road mudcat fence sitters
that lefties are the real baddies...

That was a right proper home goal...

Keep it down in BS please mates...!!!

Right, pfr. I said I was butting out of this this thread, but instead of respecting that and moving on you've decided to attack me. That's very sad. You and I are almost always on the same side of every argument, but it's extremely noticeable that you rarely explicitly support my position or even engage with anything I say at all. Don't worry, I'm not crying. But on the one occasion you don't agree, you do that rare wading-in to a music thread and you attack me. So here's where I am. The bloke who started this thread is a long-time pernicious and vexatious poster to this board, and, as such, he was banned. Joe Offer did not agree with that and I fully expect him to wade in here any minute to excoriate me, but I don't care. The poster in question has repeatedly tried to use his Max-given right to post above the line as a guest to reignite his far-right politicising via music threads, doing what the far right do best, pretending to be hurt fluffy-bunnies. In my view, and only in my view, he should NOT be starting threads here. Not my gig. I can't think of any other forum on which this wild-west laissez-faire would be even remotely contemplated. Good luck in this thread. You and the cockeyed minnow-guest LiLo can now post what you like, as ever. I won't be reading, and this time I bloody mean it.

I wasn't in attack mode..
Folks will know it for certain if I ever am...

Acknowledging when someone on you own side is being a bit of a dick
is not the same as supporting the other side..

It's fair enough to express disappointment and exasperation
when your mate's dickness behaviour is actually helping the other side..

Mature self restraint is a vital discipline,
whenever indulging in militant activism
in full view of the public..

At least adolescent student protest 'SJW's have an excuse of immature youthful over excitability...

Steve , you are a long time pernicious vexatious and bullying poster here, you have not been banned! The original poster was demonized by you, among others, for being a political conservative who held views opposite to you. you and a mod who agreed with you banned him. You are, plain and simple, an arrogant bully.

Stop sniping at each other and go and learn a wee bit about Henry Lawson: fascinating subject, and some great songs.
Far more interesting than your petty squabbles!

PFR - knowing you, I think you'd have hours and hours of enjoyment reading Henry Lawson, A.P. 'Banjo' Paterson, and other bush poetry greats.
Here's a good place to start:

Joe - Bush poetry.. ???

I see one of poems is entitled "Lost in the Bush"..

errrmm.. that reminds me fondly of the 1970s..

"In Defence of the Bush".. sadly a poem necessary for this modern fashionable era..??

"Windy Gap".. ooh.. I'm not to keen on the sound of that one...

City or country, wherever I am,
I'll always be a fan of bush.
Dark or fair, or ginger there...

..No, I must not continue this poem, I've annoyed enough folks today..

Quick change of subject...

Joe - Australia produces some excellent modern day 'Western' movies.
the variations of wild hostile terrain are perfect...

I am always a fan of great outdoors films...
Characters struggling to survive against the odds of extreme nature...

But I'm no longer much of a reader, so novels and poems,
aren't really my thing anymore...

I think my favourite line from HL involved the old bush doctor "Doc Wild"; for years he had come to the aid of the bushmen and their families to deal with accidents or more commonly to attend to women having problems during or after childbirth, The Doc also saved the lives of many children. Though addicted to the grog the Doc would travel many miles to treat everyone and anyone.
Finally the Doc went on one bender too many and died in an old shack in the bush, a search party was sent out from the little town where he had been living and brought his body back in a cart. The folks of the town saw the procession approaching and gathered round to see who the corpse was and one asked the man leading the horse and like a flash back came the reply, "It's Doc Wild....Git yer hats off!"

Seven words that conveyed the respect which existed in these hard times. Always gives me the chills!

"Sweet Country (2017)" is an interesting movie..

"Australian western set on the Northern Territory frontier in the 1920s,
where justice itself is put on trial when an aged Aboriginal farmhand shoots a white man in self-defense
and goes on the run as a posse gathers to hunt him down.
"

This has all the elements of a terrific serious outdoors drama..

Personally, I felt it was sabotaged by the Director's pretentious art-house editing.
But definitely worth considering if the subject matter and scenery appeals...
