We haven't had much about Lawson's work lately. It's good stuff. You'll find many Lawson poems set to music at http://ozfolksongaday.blogspot.com/

The Priscilla Herdman Water Lily album is all Lawson, I think.

I didn't expect any aggro.   Just though the little story had a bearing on what makes folksong so special to us all. I've been in that old bark kitchen many's the time, though it looked different the spirit was the same.

I haven't a clue who Henry Lawson was, or any real inclination to find out more..

But having looked in this thread out of curiosity,
I must add I think Steve was out of order..

It's that kind of gratuitous behaviour that only serves to further confirm
our opponent's prejudices of bullying lefty cabals..

.. and will also help persuade middle of the road mudcat fence sitters
that lefties are the real baddies...

Joe - Australia produces some excellent modern day 'Western' movies.
the variations of wild hostile terrain are perfect...

I am always a fan of great outdoors films...
Characters struggling to survive against the odds of extreme nature...

But I'm no longer much of a reader, so novels and poems,
aren't really my thing anymore...

I think my favourite line from HL involved the old bush doctor "Doc Wild"; for years he had come to the aid of the bushmen and their families to deal with accidents or more commonly to attend to women having problems during or after childbirth, The Doc also saved the lives of many children. Though addicted to the grog the Doc would travel many miles to treat everyone and anyone.
Finally the Doc went on one bender too many and died in an old shack in the bush, a search party was sent out from the little town where he had been living and brought his body back in a cart. The folks of the town saw the procession approaching and gathered round to see who the corpse was and one asked the man leading the horse and like a flash back came the reply, "It's Doc Wild....Git yer hats off!"

Seven words that conveyed the respect which existed in these hard times. Always gives me the chills!

"Sweet Country (2017)" is an interesting movie..

"Australian western set on the Northern Territory frontier in the 1920s,
where justice itself is put on trial when an aged Aboriginal farmhand shoots a white man in self-defense
and goes on the run as a posse gathers to hunt him down."

This has all the elements of a terrific serious outdoors drama..

Personally, I felt it was sabotaged by the Director's pretentious art-house editing.
But definitely worth considering if the subject matter and scenery appeals...
