My grandad used to sing a little ditty to us...

Let your whiskers grow
Let your whiskers grow
Waste no time in shaving
Pull them out by the roots
Make laces for your boots
See what money you're saving.

That is all I recall and don't even think he sang more than this. My dad sang it to us too and sang it to my children. Despite his aggressive dementia my dad can still remember and sing this if we prompt him with the first line.

Does anyone else know of this or know any more of it?

I know this as one verse which cropped up in several songs. "Down at our school" was the main one although why this verse suddenly appeared at the end I dont know

Yes, 'Down at Our School' as recorded by the Oldham Tinkers. They added a couple of extra verses that I think were school playground rhymes. Was your granddad from Lancashire? At lot of that playground stuff was pretty universal, though.

Tinker's one starts, if I remember rightly

Down at our schoo'
Teachers are so funny
If tha wants to see 'em
Tha'll 'ave to pay some money
Soldiers 'alf a crown
Sailors 'alf a guinea
Big fat men, 2 and 10
Little kids a penny

Here's an Oldham Tinkers' take from YouTube. I don't know if this is their 'definitive' take.

Hi there Julie, my Dad used to sing it to me!
About 1947-53.
We lived in Essex, England.
I thought I was the only person who knew it!!!
