From my vantage point near the American epicenter of the pandemic, I'm just wondering if there are any promising new (or old) songs about coronavirus, whether COVID-19 (ideal) or SARS (okay) or whatever.

Who will inspire us
To sing of the virus?
Won't somebody please
Write a tune for this disease?

What could be finer
Than quarantine in Chiner?
Who will write wittily
Of contagion in Italy?

Thanks, I think.
I shouldn't harp on details, but 1) I don't think your phrasing brings out the rhyme of "please" and "disease", and 2) Jerry is not the same person as Gerry.

Yes, I offered the last verse, so it’s a song by committee then.
I thought it was a good rendition overall, though slightly menacing, presumably deliberately.

reported that people in wuhan are or were square dancing in their homes during the quarantine

DANCING AT WUHAN tune dancing at whitsun

We dance to the music that everyone loves
We dance with our masks and our goggles and gloves
And we stare down the virus we should be fearful of
And still they are dancing in Wuhan

We dance to fiddles and banjos, guitars
It was somebody’s music but now it is ours
We’ll dance to the rainbows we’ll dance to the stars
And still they are dancing in Wuhan

We open the windows to let in the air
And call to the people below don’t despair
If you hear the music dance with us down there
And still they are dancing in Wuhan

We learned from our ancestors life can be gone
In the blink of an eye in the length of a song
For the sake of our children we will keep dancing on
And still they are dancing in Wuhan

So bow to your partner and then do si do
Alamand left and heel to toe
If our lives should be shortened this is how we will go
And still they are dancing in Wuhan

Subject: ADD: Some Little Bug is Going to Find You
From: Joe Offer
Date: 10 Mar 20 - 09:59 PM

Conrad Bladey send me this one:

Some Little Bug is Going to Find You
(words by Benjamin Burl, music by Silvio Hein)

In these days of indigestion it is oftentimes a question
As to what to eat and what to leave alone.
Every microbe and bacillus has a different way to kill us
And in time they all will claim us for their own.
There are germs of every kind in every food that you can find
In the market or upon the bill of fare.
Drinking water's just as risky as the so-called "deadly" whiskey
And it's often a mistake to breathe the air.

Some little bug is going to find you someday.
Some little bug will creep behind you someday.
Then he'll send for his bug friends
And all your troubles they will end,
For some little bug is gonna find you someday.

The inviting green cucumber, it's most everybody's number
While sweetcorn has a system of its own.
Now, that radish seems nutritious, but its behavior is quite vicious
And a doctor will be coming to your home.
Eating lobster, cooked or plain, is only flirting with ptomaine,
While an oyster often has a lot to say.
And those clams we eat in chowder make the angels sing the louder
For they know that they 'II be with us right away.

Some little bug is going to find you someday.
Some little bug will creep behind you someday.
Eat that juicy sliced pineapple,
And the sexton dusts the chapel
Oh, yes, some little bug is gonna find you someday.

When cold storage vaults I visit, I can only say, "What is it
Makes poor mortals fill their systems with such stuff?"
Now, at breakfast prunes are dandy if a stomach pump is handy
And a doctor can be called quite soon enough.
Eat a plate of fine pig's knuckles and the headstone cutter chuckles
While the gravedigger makes a mark upon his cuff.
And eat that lovely red bologna and you 'II wear a wood kimona
As your relatives start packing up your stuff.

Some little bug is going to find you someday.
Some little bug will creep behind you someday.
Then he'll send for his bug friends
And all your troubles they will end,
For some little bug is gonna find you someday.

Those crazy foods they fix, they'll float us 'cross the River Styx
Or start us climbing up the Milky Way.
And those meals they serve in courses mean a hearse and two black horses
So before meals, some people always pray.
Luscious grapes breed appendicitis, while their juice leads to gastritis
So there's only death to greet us either way.
Fried liver's nice, but mind you, friends will follow close behind you
And the papers, they will have nice things to say.........

Some little bug is going to find you someday.
Some little bug will creep behind you someday.
Then he'll send for his bug friends
And all your troubles they will end,
For some little bug is gonna find you someday.

Flip Breskin shared this via Facebook this morning, she got it from Eliza Rubenstein. I hope I don't have to name the tune that will jump into your head:

I am the very model of effective social distancing!
I listen to the experts on the topic of resistance-ing;
I know that brunch and yoga class aren’t nearly as imperative
As doing what I can to change the nation’s viral narrative.

I’m very well acquainted, too, with living solitarily
And confident that everyone can do it temporarily:
Go take a walk, or ride a bike, or dig into an unread book;
Avoid the bars and restaurants and carry out, or learn to cook.

There’s lots of stuff to watch online while keeping safe from sinus ills
(In this case, it’s far better to enjoy your Netflix MINUS chills)!
Adopt a pet, compose a ballad, write some earnest doggerel,
And help demolish Trump before our next event inaugural.

Pandemics are alarming, but they aren’t insurmountable
If everybody pitches in to hold ourselves accountable.
In short, please do your part to practice prudent co-existence-ing,
And be the very model of effective social distancing!

I've read a Tweet (or something to that effect) that said you can sing the name "COVID-19" to the tune of "Come On Eileen"

I'll allow a more musically-inclined member to come up with a song to that affect, unless I get bored and find some unexpected motivation to do it myself.

This was written for the "Beast from the East" blizzard a couple of years ago, which left a lot of supermarket shelves empty where I live. The virus could have similar effects, so it's resurfaced.

No flour in Scotland!
When will we see
Sliced breid again?
No Mother’s Pride for
Your wee bit piece and jam
No cheesey toasties
(fur who?)
Wur tartan army
Just pictures of empty shelves
Aye, blink again!

Those days are past now
But icy blast, it may remain
But we might still drive (how?)
Tae get tae Asda again
And stand in queues there
(Whit for?)
Wur milk, breid an whisky,
And carry them homewards
Tae drink again...

Got the disease
Corona, Corona
Got the disease
Got such a bad fever
I'm weak in the knees

Corona, Corona
Where you been so long?
Corona, Corona
Where you been so long?
Wuhan Hospital
Place gone crazy wrong

Go away Corona
Go away from my door
Go away Corona
Go away from my door
Take your plagues and your frogs
To Pharoah's door

Corona, Corona
This country's got the blues
Corona, Corona
This country's got the blues
Dis-ease keeps spreading
Whole world is pretty confused

Hey, remember the Disney film about
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves,
and when Snow White wants everybody to ... gulp ...

"wash up" ?!
It's a whole musical set-piece, remember?

Step Up To The Tub!
Ain't no disgrace
Just pull up your sleeves
And get' em in place
Then scoop up the water and rub it on your face and go
"bllllllll blllllllllll bllllllllm"!

Pick up the soap.
Now, don't try to bluff!
Work up the later,
And when you got enough,
Get your hands full o' water
And you snort and you snuff and go
"bllllll    bllllllll bllllllm"!

You douse and you souse
You rub and you scrub
You splutter and splash
All over the tub
You may be cold an' wet when you're done
But you gotta admit it's good clean fun!

Now, scrub good and hard!
It can't be denied
That you'll look mighty cute
As soon as you're dried!
Then it's good for the soul
And it's good for the hide to go
"bllllllll   blllllllllll    blllllllllm!"

... and Dopey swallows a bar of soap
and starts hiccupping bubbles ...
those were the days ...

Well, as Tom Paxton used to say, I have been propelled into writing a song by the latest events (to the tune of When I’m Cleaning Windows’):
C                        C7
Our cat goes out and he roams free
      F                     Adim
To take the air or take a pee
          C                           E7
Now he goes out much more than me
   Ab7                         C
Whilst we’re stuck in lockdown

Now every time we cough or sneeze
We use the elbows of our sleeves
But now our clothes are all diseased
Whilst we’re stuck in lockdown

With no vaccine or target drugs
We’ve burnt all clothes to kill the bugs
Indoors we sit, just wrapped in rugs
Whilst we’re stuck in lockdown

We wash our hands like they say so
My Happy Birthday’s rather slow
I do my best Marilyn Monroe
Whilst we’re stuck in lockdown

Yes, my rendition takes so long
Outside the door, queues quite a throng
Saying “mass gatherings are banned as wrong”
Whilst we’re stuck in lockdown

   C                                              D7
Now to lose our loved ones, we all must be prepared
G7                                                                   C
But if it’s just loved ones, maybe I will then be spared

Now no one knows how long it’s for
And so I sing out my front door
Our neighbours beg me “please no more”
Whilst we’re stuck in lockdown

Just trying to cheer up those poor souls
But they lob missiles, truth be told
An endless stream of toilet rolls
Whilst we’re stuck in lockdown

Whilst we’re indoors the cat does play
Uprooting seedlings night and day
To him it’s one big litter tray
Whilst we’re stuck in lockdown

To pass the time, I do crosswords
The cat’s goes off to chase the birds
And leaves my lawn festooned with tell tale signs
Whilst we’re stuck in lockdown

The strain is showing here indoors
There’s not a lot to stop being bored
We have cross words, and that’s for sure
Whilst we’re stuck in lockdown

    C                                     D7
I really couldn’t wait, when they said isolate
G7                                                                   C
All I seem to do now, is just wait and wait and wait

At last we’re germ free, I now think
My wife pours out my favourite drink
To disinfect the taps and sink
Whilst we’re stuck in lockdown

So we sit here in lockdown Hell
Sod all to eat, nor drink as well
My vodka’s gone to make hand gel
Whilst we’re stuck in lockdown.

How I’m worryin' 'bout you, You sure done me wrong.

Six-Foot Blues
words: Steve Woodbury and Ann Bauer (March, 2020)
tune: Five-Foot-Two, Eyes of Blue

    Five-foot-two — no, that won’t do!
Gotta stay six feet from you.
          That’s why I’ve got the six-foot blues!
    ‘Social Distance’ gets resistance
       But the CDC’s insistence
Gives us all the six-foot blues!

Coronavirus does inspire us,
    Reading the news,
To obey what they say;
As citizens we pay our dues.

If we’re at sea, there must be
One full fathom ’twixt you and me,
That’s why we’ve got the six foot blues!
    Five-foot-two — that won’t do!
Gotta stay six feet from you,
Now we’ve all got the six-foot blues!

If I stay at home, all alone,
    I’ll be so blue;
If I go out and walk about,
   There’s a chance that I’ll see you.

Miss my family and friends a lot,
Wary neighbors is what I’ve got,
Because they’ve got those six-foot blues!
    Five-foot-two — that won’t do!
Gotta stay six feet from you
Now we’ve all got the six-foot blues!

This new metric, antiseptic,
    Is our routine;
The separation for conversation:
    About two meters in between!

I miss the music, I miss the fizz,
Shutdown news is all there is,
            That’s why I’ve got those six-foot blues.
    Five-foot-two — that won’t do!
Gotta stay six feet from you,
Now we’ve all got the six-foot blues!

from sanchobrable (Tony) who runs Wessex Acoustic Calendar and, in more normal times, an e-mail update on news/changes/RIPs/corrections. For an area from Cornwall to Surrey and up into Gloucestershre, approx.

Talking Coronavirus Blues

I gave my pretty woman a hug and a kiss.
She sprayed me with Dettol and called the police.
Turns out she’d been watching that BBC News
and that’s what’s got me to singing the blues.
Now, when we talk, I gotta give her a ring
cos she’s doing that social distancing thing.
Ain’t never too late for self-isolatin'
cos there’s nothing so mean as that COVID-19.

I went along to Asda and joined a queue
hoping to buy some rolls for the loo.
I asked a ‘colleague’ (member of staff)’
He said, ‘Mate, you must be having a laugh’.
When I went to the checkout, the girl at the till
said, ‘You’ll just have to use the back of your bill.’
Ain’t never too late for self-isolatin'
cos there’s nothing so mean as that COVID-19.

I was sat in the garden reading that chap Chaucer
when out of the sky comes a flying saucer.
An alien descended, just like in a dream.
Then he saw my mask and he let out a scream.
He got back inside and away he flew
all the way home to Aldebaroo.
Ain’t never too late for self-isolatin'
Cos there’s nothing so mean as that COVID-19.

If any of you would like to render the above musically and commit it to YouTube, please feel free. Just credit me with the lyrics.

Keep well,

Tony

Subject: ADD: 50 ways to beat Corona
From: Joe Offer
Date: 19 Mar 20 - 06:34 PM

50 ways to beat Corona (with apologies to Simon and Garfunkel)

She said it’s getting bad out there, you’d best stock up on food
The thing we need to do right now is practice solitude
If it gets out of hand you know we’re really all quite screwed
Unless we find 50 ways to kill Corona.

The danger is quite real, she said, although we cannot see
If we’re too late it could spell the end of humanity
The situation’s urgent, so we all must act quickly
To find the 50 ways to kill Corona.
50 ways to kill Corona.

You just take a step back, Jack
Keep your hands clean, Gene
Stay 6 feet away, Ray
Keep your distance from me.
Yeah, stay home from work, Kirk
Don’t be a germ spreading jerk
Just put the mask on, John,
And keep us healthy.

I said to be afraid is not my kind of thing
And I don’t understand this talk of social distancing
The world is changing much too fast, I find it puzzling
So could you please explain the 50 ways.

She told me there’s no more time for talk, you must listen to me
I have a PhD in epidemiology
I’ve read all the research reports from the CDC
And I’ve got 50 ways to kill Corona.
50 ways to kill Corona.

Yeah, stay off the bus, Gus
Don’t get on that plane, Jane
Don’t touch your face, Grace
You just listen to me.
Don’t cough in the air, Claire
You might spread a disease there
Don’t sneeze on Louise, please
Just keep us healthy.

I said it seems to me that everything you say
Is now the new behavior we must practice every day
If we want any chance to keep this perilous disease at bay
So I’ll try every way.

Now we all know the methods to keep ourselves disease free
We all can soon look forward to a return to normalcy
But until then I think I’ll go and buy some more TP!
So let’s use 50 ways to kill Corona.
50 ways to kill Corona.

You just take a step back, Jack
Keep your hands clean, Gene
Stay 6 feet away, Ray
Keep your distance from me.
Yeah, stay home from work, Kirk
Don’t be a germ spreading jerk
Just put the mask on, John,
And keep us healthy.

Yeah, stay off the bus, Gus
Don’t get on that plane, Jane
Don’t touch your face, Grace
You just listen to me.
Don’t cough in the air, Claire
You might spread a disease there
And don’t sneeze on Louise, please
Just keep us healthy.

Keir Nuttall (husband & musical partner of Kate Miller-Heidke) wrote a Covid-19 song to the tune of I Was Only 19, but John Schumann (who wrote the original) asked him to take it down. Story on the ABC News site. That's the Australian ABC, not the USian.

Oldest rick in the book - new lyrics to established tune, now write a new tune to the new lyrics. New song, no copyright. I guess it depends on the words lifted from the original. But in English there are so many words to choose from it is relatively easy to get round that one. A parody does require knowing the original, to give it more traction, so is the effort worth it?

By Orit Klein Varsky:

You know the ballad Twa Corbies? I made a parody of it

Twa Covids

As I was walking all alane
I saw two masked men makking mane
The tane unto the tether did say
Where shall we stock pile stuff today
Where shall we stock pile stuff today

In beyond yon aldi store
I saw some TP, more and more
And naebody kens that it is there
But the guard and the staff and the manager
But the guard and the staff and the manager

The guard is to the washroom gane
The staff to bring more packets hame
And the manager is gane out smoking
So we may make our stock piling
We may make our stock piling

You'll sit on the guard's breast bane
And I'll pick out some "extra fine"
With many a packet many roles
We'll never lack TP at all
Never lack TP at all

Mony a one of them maks mane
But nane has TP stocked at hame
O'er the TP isles when they are bare
The wind shall blow for ever mair
The wind shall blow for ever mair

Is the take-off of "F of S" posted above also your own? It's been appreciated by a number of friends, and I'd like to know who the Makar is. Good Luck.

I'm thinking this Tom Lehrer ditty is missing from this collection. I've revived it's thread which for some reason is below the line in BS:

By Tom Lehrer, ©1952

I Got It from Agnes

I love my friends,
And they love me,
We're just as close,
As we can be
And just because
We really care
Whatever we get
We share.

I got it from Agnes
She got it from Jim
We all agree it must have been Louise who gave it to him
Now she got it from Harry
Who got it from Marie
And everybody know that Marie
Got it from me.
Giles got it from Daphne.

She got it from Joan
Who picked it up in County Cork
A-kissin' the blarney stone
Pierre gave it to Shiela
Who must have brought it there
He got it from Francois and Jacques, aha!
Lucky Pierre!

Max got it from Edith
Who gets it ev'ry spring
She got it from her daddy
Who just gives her ev'rything
She then gave it to Daniel
Whose Spaniel has it now
Our dentist even got it
And we're still... wondering how.

Ah, but I got it from Agnes
Or maybe it was Sue...
Or Millie or Billie or Gillie or Willie-
It doesn't matter who
It might have been at the pub
Or at the club or in the loo
And if you will be my friend, then I might...
(Mind you, I said "might"...)
Give it to you!

No Flour in Scotland was written by an Edinburgh woman I hadn't heard of before - I think I got it off the "Lost Edinburgh" FB group. My only web access now is an iPhone 4S, which makes copying and pasting both the text from one place and the provenance from another very difficult.
