John Byng from Horsham Folk, Sussex writes:-

Dear Horsham Folk Club Members and Friends

We had a great time last Sunday with the Flying Toads but I am sorry to say that the new plague now forces us to close for a while.

This is a great pity, not least because I was so looking forward to the Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne gig in a fortnight's time. But we shall keep the forced closure to the minimum so we urge you to look out for my next email which I hope will convey much better news.
Look after yourselves and each other.

Best wishes

A major loss for the folklore calendar in Sussex: -

Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green

It is with great sadness that Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green has decided that in the current circumstances it would be both impossible and irresponsible to go ahead this year.

This is not a decision we have come to lightly and know that many people will, like us, be devastated. Not only is this for many of us a major high point of our year, it is also vital to kick-starting the local summer economy. We will be meeting regularly to discuss the situation as advice from the government evolves.

We would like to thank all of our supporters, volunteers and local businesses for their continued support. Please keep safe everyone, look after yourselves. ??

Just posted on my website about two in Stroud
Lansdown Hall CLOSED - Chris Wood CANCELLED
Wotton under Edge UtEA CLOSED. Tom McConville CANCELLED
Stroud Ceilidhs in Dursley April 4th CANCELLED.

I think it is fair to say if it looks the kind of thing to be cancelled it almost certainly is. Or would be lightly attended anyway.

Easter 2020: Folk Up the Moors

IMPORTANT - EVENT CANCELLED!!

I’ve just heard from Leon, landlord at the Sportsman’s, who agrees with me and general consensus that because of prevailing conditions, the event should be cancelled for the wellbeing and safety of everyone.

Regrettable but necessary.

Hopefully we can re-schedule the gathering as soon as safe to do so.

Sincerely,

John Steward

Cellar Upstairs club cancelled this Saturday
Dear all

This week’s guest, Jeff Wesley, is 85, so I phoned him to check whether he was still happy to come on Saturday. He’s decided that it would be wiser not to come. Under all the circumstances, I’ve decided it would be best to cancel the club this Saturday. I’m hoping that we will be able to meet on 28th March and 4th April, but it’s impossible to be sure, as the situation has been changing from day to day.
Looking ahead, the Teacups have reluctantly decided to cancel their forthcoming farewell tour, including their night at the Cellar on 16th May. Their agent says they found it a difficult decision to make but, with the travel restrictions from the US (where Alex lives), and because Alex is immuno-compromised, it was just not possible for him to travel at this time. With the new advice from the government this week, they’ve decided they have to cancel the tour.

As this has only just happened, I haven’t yet booked a replacement for that night. I am hoping that the virus will be past its peak by then, and we’ll be able to get together in small groups, if not in large ones.

All the best (and keep on washing your hands!)

Sheila

The promised update from Lawrence Heath

Welcome to the Facebook group for the Music Institute Folk Club. The club meets approximately fortnightly, between September and April inclusive, at the Guildford Institute, Ward Street, Guildford GU1 4LH (opposite the Library in North Street). We have some of the top names from the English folk scene (and sometimes further afield) twice a month. In addition we run monthly "Come All Ye Open Stage" evenings for local performers and very occasionally promote concerts at other venues in the centre of Guildford.

Our website is http://www.musici.org.uk.

The folk club is run by The West Surrey Folk Consortium which also organised the monthly barn dances at Godalming Borough Hall, known as GBH Ceilidhs, which have their own group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1257598820921404/

Islington Folk Club

Cancellations

Over the weekend, we decided, because of the increased spread of the Coronavirus, to cancel the next three club nights. These are this coming Thursday - 19th March - and 26th March & 2nd April. We very much regret having to do this but there is clearly overwhelming evidence that even when people gather in small groups, there is a heightened risk of infection.

Given the Government's advice yesterday - that we should all 'avoid' pubs, restaurants, theatres, etc. and that those over 70 and those and/or with underlying health conditions should socially distance themselves for an extended period - it seems likely that there will need to be further cancellations. There is in fact a strong possibility that we will not be able to resume until the Autumn. We will review the situation in seven to ten day's time and keep you informed.

Bournemouth Folk

Bad news!

Very sadly, we have had to cancel the upcoming gigs with Megson, Martin Simpson and Daphne's Flight. The Shelley Theatre has announced closure for now as a result of the Government advice due to the danger of Covid-19 spreading.

The Shelley Theatre will be in touch with all ticket-purchasers.

Hopefully we will be able to resume our series of folk concerts in a few months time. We will keep you informed by mail-out. We plan to offer gigs to these three acts for some time in 2021.

See you soon and keep healthy!

Of interest only to the dance community in Tarrant County, TX, but the hafla (a dance concert - belly dance, gypsy, etc.) that was scheduled in a couple of weeks at a local middle eastern restaurant has been cancelled. And this is the kind of thing that is likely to drive a lot of small businesses out of business. Dance students can keep their distance as they dance, but there is equipment that must be cleaned that is difficult to clean (fans, veils, etc.) so will probably reduce dances to simple productions with no props.

When this has passed we must pick up immediately where we left off if the studio manages to open again in a few weeks. The restaurant has a great buffet that brings in a lunch crowd, except now it will only be takeout if they can keep it up.

yesterday the National Folk Festival was cancelled, today I cancelled my folk club for this weekend.

I came home to about 20 emails & they all related to coviv19, even the email from my sister (I had sent her some cartoons on the topic!) many were about cancellations.

The weekly newsletter from our state Folk Federation listed more cancellations than events, & there was a notice on the top of the newsletter saying some of the listed events might still be cancelled, so check beforehand.

As we are in the middle of Festival season (Jan-April), lots of international artists have arrived for the National & other festivals. One performer is heading out after doing earlier festivals, with only his last couple of concerts cancelled, but others are just arriving.

"Reluctantly, but inevitably, we have to announce that Leith Folk Club will have to close it's doors for a while because of the coronavirus. We actually have mixed emotions about it all because while we'd like to keep the club going for the musicians and for you, our audience, we definitely don't want a single person to become ill just because we stayed open."

So tomorrow's gig with rab Noakes is off and others for the foreseeable future.

It is with much sadness and deep regret that we have to announce that we are cancelling the remainder of our ‘On Reflection’ Tour dates with immediate effect.

For now please hang on to your tickets - we hope to reschedule these dates into the autumn - as you can imagine these are testing times for the promoters and venues and they will need time to work it out.

We have taken this decision as we feel strongly that it is the responsible and right thing to do in the current circumstances.

This is a very worrying time and we thank everyone in advance for their support and understanding.

Stay safe and calm.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:
In the midst of these uncertain times, the following gigs have been cancelled:
March 20th - Folk At The Barlow, Edgworth, Bolton
March 29th - Walthamstow Folk Club (with John Spiers)
April 3rd - Devoran Acoustic, Cornwall (with John Spiers)
All other gigs, remain as they were
We completely understand the reasons for these cancellations. However -
Losing work at such short notice is a huge blow to musicians and leaves us all in a very precarious position. We have no safety nets, and no fall back options at this point in time.
John and I have been busy recording and producing a new CD exclusively for our upcoming tour. If you would like to order a copy of the CD you will be helping us a great deal.

from Wessex Acoustic Folk Club
CORONA VIRUS UPDATE

With the situation changing daily, we have been watching and waiting on official advice for public gatherings.
We now feel we need to take responsible action and have cancelled concerts through to the end of May.
We will monitor the situation and take further action if necessary.

People who have already bought tickets for the cancelled events should be contacted by We Got Tickets with details of refunds.

We will post on FaceBook, the club website, and email our mailing list when there is news of changes.
As many as possible of the cancelled concerts will be rearranged and fitted in to our programme in the future.

We hope you all stay safe and well in these testing times.

John, Kathy and Kitty

Croydon Folk Club cancel meeting on March 23rd
CANCELLED,.....message from Tim (Edey)...Hi guys, hope you are well amongst all this madness.. I have asked John Barrow to get in touch re my concert next week,
I personally would feel the right thing is to re-schedule as its simply too risky i believe to be having any gatherings of any people at present sadly,
hate to cancel but re-scheduling with JB for an autumn October or Nov date or dec is the way ahead i would say
stay safe folks tim

Not folk, but Edinburgh's King's Theatre is now closed, on the eve of a week's production of "Patience", staged by Edinburgh Gilbert and Sullivan Society. Very hard on all the people who will have worked so hard rehearsing for it. Reliable info from a cast member: not yet on the theatre's website.
A quick check on the other Edinburgh theatres shows no other closures yet, but they mostly have Covid-19 statements on their websites and are " monitoring the situation in the light of Government advice".
